PHUKET: Mystery surrounds the final moments of a woman whose body was found floating in a swimming pool at a five-star resort on Phuket early today.
Pakistani Shumyla Mir, 27, had argued with her American husband Altamash Jamal Mir, 39, earlier in the night with Mr Mir moving to a separate room, according to a police investigator.
Lieutenant Santi Prakobkan, of Tatchatchai Police Station, said he believed the couple rowed over Mrs Mir's connection with a former boyfriend via Facebook.
Staff at the JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa found Mrs Mir sitting, crying by the swimming pool about 2.30am today.
''It is believed she had made a rudimentary attempt to slash her wrists,'' Lt Santi said. ''The staff urged her to go inside because rain was falling, then when she refused to move, took an umbrella out to put over her head.
''The staffer went to look for Mrs Mir's husband.''
At 4.15am, Mrs Mir was found floating in the pool.
An initial medical examination by doctors at Thalang Hospital indicated that Mrs Mir drowned, the lieutenant said.
It is believed arrangements are being made for Mrs Mir's body to be flown back to Pakistan.
The name of the former boyfriend has not been disclosed.
