Durian farmers and traders warned of prison term if sell unripe durians to customers

The Department of Agricultural Extension today reiterated its warning to traders and farmers not to sell unripe durians to customers or else they could face prison terms.
The warning came as the department and Chanthaburi province jointly hosted a campaign to encourage traders and durian farmers to sell only ripe durians to customers, and to warn them to realize of the serious consequences if they sell unripe durians to customers or export them.

The event is also aimed to ensure consumers, as well as durian exporters that they would be receiving good quality durians from the Chanthaburi, which are currently being released into various markets, both within the local market and abroad.

The department and Chanthaburi provincial office have set up check-points in 8 districts of the province to make sure that no unripe durians were transported out of the province for sale.

Mobile units were also set up jointly with other relevant state agencies to inspect and destroy unripe durians found in any fruit markets immediately upon being tipped off..

If any traders or farmers are found to knowingly sell unripe durian to customers, they could be subjected to an imprisonment without any suspension of punishment, for violating Article 271 of the Criminal Code and the Consumers Protection Act.

It's out of control. Since it's spectacular success in reducing deaths over Songkran holiday the gov is moving on to higher priority issues. Expect laws related to condition of veggies, fruit and meat will be enshrined in the new constitution.

It's a huge problem Willy a creeping menace that threatens us all!
Vast profits are made by gangs traffiking in the misery of durians that haven't yet reach full maturity, this heinous crime undermines the moral fabric of the nation and threatens to plunge social order into total chaos unless stamped out, these traffickers of juvenile durians are a scourge on the nation and must be stopped lest their foul trade spills over onto young innocent rambutans and immature mangoes.

I've never seen Durian being sold where the buyer doesn't get the seller to cut it open first for inspection.

I hope this could be extended to cover other fruit. I've found sometimes the melons I was sold were not ripe at all, felt tough almost like silicone.

Not that I am a durian lover, but this made me wonder whether unripe durians will eventually ripen sufficiently after harvest, so I did a google search. Here's some info about harvest timing and quality for those that want to know:

Traditionally, ripe fruits are allowed to drop on to the ground naturally and later collected for the market. Malaysian durian growers do not pluck fruit at the mature stage as what is widely practiced in Thailand. Although naturally dropped fruit has a better eating quality, it has very short storage life (3-4 days), which hinders the fruit from being transported to distant markets.

Harvesting the fruit from the tree at maturity has an advantage in that the fruit takes a longer time to ripen and can be transported to distant markets. Fruit maturity plays a very important role in ensuring that the harvested fruit has a good eating quality and is acceptable by consumers. Fruits that are harvested earlier than the optimum stage of maturity will have a poor eating quality. In contrast, fruits that are harvested too late have a shorter storage life, as the fruits may have ripened on the tree. Durian, therefore, should be harvested at an optimum stage of maturity for optimum quality and storage life.

Reliable maturity indices are very important to determine the best time for harvesting. Criteria such as age of fruit based on calendar date, the appearance of the fruit stalk and the fruit surface, the sound of fruit from tapping, and the smell of the fruit are commonly related to fruit maturity in durian. However, not all the criteria can be applied for all durian cultivars as one single criterion or several criteria may be suitable for some cultivars but not for some other cultivars.

Sounds like it does eventually ripen.

'Ripen'? It all depends on how one likes the fruit. Some like it firm. Some like it soft, as I do.

For those trying Durian for the first time, a word of warning. Do not drink beer straight after. It gives me terrible indigestion.

Ah yes, reminds me of the first time I tried durian many years ago in Malaysia. I was with a group of colleagues and one of the first things they advised was not to drink water when eating the stuff.

We headed out on a quest to find some good durian (an oxymoron if I've ever heard one) and after driving around Penang for a while, we happened upon a purveyor of the stuff that the locals thought had the right qualities. It should be noted that I smelled it long before laying eyes on it, and apparently we selected this place because of the particularly pungent odour. We plunked down at a big table and those from the host country began to chow down, shoving some my way. As one of the guests, I had to partake to save face. Of course, water was provided and everyone drank it without hesitation, so I did too.

After having endured eating the durian, I thought the worst was over, but it was the water that made the experience more memorable as it caused me to burp up the aftertaste for a long while.

Excellent. The stupid buggers cutting down durian instead of letting them ripen on the tree and then sell them when they have fallen of their own accord.

Also, how much money was spent n developing an odourless durian in Chanthaburi . . . . bloody stupid!

I am tired of asking the traders for suk-nim durian . . .

    Morons

    Anyway . . .
