German Man Brutally Attacked By 'Koh Tao Copycats'

UDON THANI — A 25-year-old German man was admitted to the ICU after he was allegedly attacked by drunk teenagers in Udon Thani who wanted to imitate the brutal murder of two British tourists on Koh Tao island in September.

Police say the German man was sitting with two Thai friends near a park in Udon Thani's Muang District in the early morning of 15 November when three Thai teenagers suddenly attacked him with a garden hoe.

The man is now being treated for severe injuries in the ICU at Udon Thani Hospital. Medical workers say he suffered wounds on his face and skull that required immediate operation. According to a doctor at the hospital, there's only "50-50" percent chance that he will survive.

The attack also left one of the German's friends with a broken arm, police say.

Police have arrested three suspects, two 18-year-olds and one 17-year-old, in connection with the crime.

Pol.Col. Surin Chaichomphu, deputy commander of Udon Thani Police, announced the arrests of the two men, named Thanakorn Khusuwan and Surachet Sripolmuang, at the press conference yesterday. The third suspect, nicknamed Wuth, was not present at the press conference because he is a minor.

According to Pol.Col. Surin, both men confessed to assaulting the German man.

Thanakorn and Surachet reportedly told police that they were drinking at Wuth's house on 14 November. After they became drunk, the teenagers reportedly drove around town on a motorcycle until they came across the German man and his friends at the park. They also brought a garden hoe as "protection" in case they encountered any rival gang members, Pol.Col. Surin said.

After seeing the German and his friends, the three teenagers reportedly dared each other to imitate the murder of two British backpackers on the southern island of Koh Tao on 15 September, in which the tourists were brutally beaten to death by a garden hoe.

Wuth reportedly accepted the challenge "out of drunkenness" and proceeded to beat the German and his friends with the garden hoe he had brought from home. The other two suspects soon joined in, Pol.Col. Surin said.

"This action is a typical case of youthful recklessness," Pol.Col. Surin said at the press conference. "The three suspects are all students. But now they have ruined their future."

All three suspects have been charged with physical assault leading to grave injuries. Pol.Col. Surin said a murder charge will also be filed if the man dies from his injuries.

Pol.Lt.Col. Kachornsak Wongsaraj, a detective officer at Muang Udon Thani Police Station, told reporters that the German victim works as a language tutor for Udon Thani residents who plan to move to Germany.

The German was at the park in the early hours of 15 November because he likes to watch the sunrise, Pol.Lt.Col. Kachornsak added.

    Hope the German pulls through.

And to think, a Thai would never do such a thing.

'Youthful recklessness' is not trying to kill any foreigner with a hoe, it's cold bloodied violence. Still no problem for them if daddy is rich or connected. If this is typical then god help us all.

The guy was German. I am just thinking of reasons why he may have deserved it.
Well, what were the reasons as to why he deserved it ?

Considering the population of Thailand { 65 million plus }, The crime committed on Farang are fuk all.

The Thai haters do not like it when this is bought up but have a look at crime in America or Australia.

Wouldn't a better statistical approach be to use the number of farang in Thailand as a base?

I remember the Dutch guy who was disemboweled by his Thai assistant manager in Udon last year. This guy gets a hoe in the head for fun.

That's already two up on the town that I grew up in.

Mate, you must of grown up in a very small country town , not to many people can claim to not having some serious crime go down in their town at one time or another.

We need to get real here and realize that their are real sick fukers in this world and in every country, one can only hope one does not run into them.

Jesus, the chances of getting attacked by a few fuk ups high on Ya Ba who want to cut your head off with a hoes are quite small don't you think ?

I mean if you are just minding your own business shit should not come your way but on the other hand if you are involved in an altercation with the locals the chances are high you could be seriously hurt or killed.

Just don't get in any shit, its not hard if one is just a normal punter.

We read all the time of the constant stream of farang who get in the shit down in Pattaya.

It only happens simply because most are pissed up wankers getting themselves in the shit.

This lot I simply could not give a fuk about.

So what is the crime rate of American or Australian nationals assaulting foreign tourists?

Not a good comparison of crimes against foreigners in Thailand measured against the overall crime rates in the west...

Mate, Google up " Ivan Millat Australian " you will like reading that.

Believe it not, Australia has seen some very serious crime comitted against Backpackers, quite a few killed.

Assaults on Backpackers and locals alike in my home town of Perth is quite alarming, certainly need to be on your toes if contemplating traveling Australia.

Fuked if I'd be wandering around Perth at night time but in Bangkok Its never a problem for me.

In my home town of Fremantle one would be mad to bang around there at night unless with a group of mates for security.

    Just a comparison that's all.

After living in tourist towns most of my life, I hate tourists too, but not enough to take a garden hoe to them.

Number of times I've attacked a Thai, with or without a garden tool: zero.

Then shouldn't they be charged with Attempted Murder, then charged with murder should he die.

Thailand really needs to start enforcing the death penalty; if these clowns are indeed proven guilty there is no reason to let them live, and absolutely no justification to ever letting them roam free again.

Is this individual xenophobia combined with stupidity; almost seems like they are proud of what happened on Koh Tao.

The execution of a few innocent apes would be a very small price to pay if it brought some raw fear and subservience into the cold hearts of the feral giggling thai retards that frequently run amok in this lawless and heathen land causing pain and suffering to their helpless victims and families.

Surely some "dirty harry" "judge dredd" style police hit squads could be organised to take care of business like in the good old days.

This is not good news since I live near Udon. I may just start carrying a garden hoe around, or at least a large baseball bat.

There are numerous teenagers in our village who party every night, do not have jobs and gather at the neighbors to just hang and smoke cigarettes while partying into the late hours.

I blame a large part of this type of behavior on the lack of parenteral supervision and the lack of going out and working for a living by the Thai youth.
