The negotiations had been ongoing for some time, and the Filipinos kept asking more and more money for the lease renewal on the two bases, thinking, incorrectly, that the US would cave and couldn't walk away. Gordon indeed did some positive things, but Olongapo really derives little income from what he did. It's a dead city. Clark had some efforts made to utilize the base, but none amounted to anything significant other than the airfield.
Pemberton and his group showed up at the Olongapo courthouse before dawn, despite Pemberton having been granted a waiver that he didn't have to appear today.
Today was to be a pre-trial day for both sides to present witnesses to the court.
For reasons unknown, the pre-trial today was cancelled.

Lots "of month on month off" oil offshore types, and others from the region who stay for fairly long periods. Many rent rooms and keep them even when they're on their working shift. There are still retired Americans around, but I don't think they're much of a revenue source for the bars.Quote:

Defense will call ten witnesses, including Pemberton and Pemberton's mother (first time Pemberton's family has surfaced in this case).
Prosecution will call 37 witnesses.
Trial will be Monday and Tuesday each week.

If you're asking about the "Edsa Entertainment Complex", which is more or less at the corner of Edsa and Roxas Blvd. and comprises a large number of bars under one roof, yes, it's still there. Pretty seedy area. Draws a lot of late-night players from the casino on the other side of Edsa.
