Pol Maj-General Chantawit Ramasut, deputy commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, said that 191 emergency hotline operators receive about 6,000 prank calls a day.
Only about a third of the 10,000 or so calls to 191 every day contained important or useful information. And 10 per cent of callers asked for other services, he said.
Chantawit said Bangkok police used many solutions, such as conducting checkpoints at night and patrolling crime hotspots, to suppress crime such as gun violence and student fights.
He said police had drawn up a database of student gangs and asked mall operators to inform them if student gangs were gathering at shopping centres.
