Bangkok provides health checkups for train cleaners

BANGKOK, 27 August 2014 (NNT) The Bangkok Metropolitan Authority (BMA) in collaboration with the State Railways of Thailand today provided health checkups for about 300 train cleaners at the Bangkok Railway Station (Hua Lamphong Station).

The health checkup includes blood pressure test, urine test and fasting blood sugar test. Also, the medical staff from the Fifth Public Health Services Center disseminated knowledge about the disadvantages of narcotics. If the test result of any cleaner is positive for narcotics, the BMA is ready to help them access the rehabilitation. -

    So in other words....

The BMA yesterday performed blood and urine tests on their staff to see if they were using illgal narcotics.

This invasion of privacy came on the back of the recent rape and murder by one of their staff on a train in Prachuab Khiri Khan.

Yes, and the drug test devices were donated by a group of mainly foreigners.

The number of undiagnosed cases of diabetes and liver disease in Thailand is staggering. This may just help a few people who would never otherwise seek medical help until the illness progressed to a severe state.

And yes, the testing for narcotics might be seen as an intrusion of civil liberties. However, there haven't ever been any in Thailand when it come to this sort of thing. This is a country where a Thai cop can enter a bar or club and order a patron to provide a urine test without warrant, or other just cause. Welcome to Thailand and have a fun stay.
