Indonesia : Thousands flee after volcanic eruption

Thousands flee after volcanic eruption in Indonesia
    August 29, 2010

A volcano on the Indonesian island of Sumatra erupted on Sunday for the first time in 400 years, shooting black smoke and ash up to 1,500 metres into the air and prompting the evacuation of thousands of residents.

Mount Sinabung in the Karo district of North Sumatra province thundered to life shortly after midnight, shooting lava and other volcanic materials from its crater.

Indonesia’s state-run Directorate of Vulcanology upgraded the volcano’s danger status to the highest level minutes before the eruption of the 2,451-metre peak, located about 1,300 km northwest of Jakarta.

Using trucks, ambulances and buses, local authorities evacuated thousands of residents living in nearby hamlets immediately after the eruption, the state-run Antara news agency reported.

There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Local media quoted residents as saying lava was visible from several kilometres away, including in Berastagi, a tourist area in North Sumatra.
The Directorate of Vulcanology said Sinabung’s eruption was the first recorded since 1600.

“Previously, there was no significant activity at the Mount Sinabung volcano, so the monitoring did not take priority since the 1600s,” Surono, head of the directorate, was quoted as saying by Antara.

The official said a team of experts were deployed to keep a close eye on Sinabung’s activity.

Besides ordering the evacuations, experts also warned residents to wear face masks to avoid health problems from the volcano’s ash and told people living along rivers to be alert to the possibility of lava—induced floods.

Indonesia has the highest density of volcanoes in the world with about 500 in the “Belt of Fire” in the 5,000-km-long archipelago nation. Nearly 130 are active and 65 are listed as dangerous.

Let's see....floods, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes.....ALL in Dar al Islam. When the civilized world is FORCED to nuke them, are we going to send aid as well??? As it is, NATURE is doing the job for us. All we need to do is withold donations and not loan them any equipment to extract themselves from their predicament and Islam will cease to be a problem.

Come on Allah , pull your socks up lad , is that the best you can do this year in the way of calamity : a pint-sized flood in Pakistan ,and a puny vocano in Indonesia ?

Remember the good old days, and send us a good old fashioned Mecca stampede , the ones after 'stoneing the devil ' are most fun .

Is it possible the Zionist occupational government is behind this? Perhaps this is some sort of manipulation of the earth so that they may gain control? So far no word from the voice of truth, Al Jizzaria. Or perhaps, this is a warning? All sorts of scantily clad Australian Christians and atheists visit Bali. The world will await guidance from Ayatollah Khomanei of Iran. He will know what is going on.

    Mount Sinabung erupts again
    Thu, October 24 2013

Mount Sinabung in Tanah Karo, North Sumatra, erupted again on Thursday morning sending volcanic ash as high as 3,000 meters into the air.

Areas to the east, south and southeast of the volcano were blanketed with volcanic ash, head of the National Agency for Natural Disaster Control (BNPB) Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.

"Black smoke was spurted out from the crater of the volcano from 6:00 a.m. to 8:50 a.m. local time," Sutopo said in a statement quoted by the Antara news agency on Thursday.

A series of small explosions were recorded on Wednesday afternoon and continued until Thursday morning, Sutopo said in Medan.

The Volcanology and Geology Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) warned the local population and mountain climbers to stay at least 2 kilometers away from the crater, but no evacuation order had yet been issued.

The volcano erupted last September forcing thousands of people to leave their houses and stay in evacuation tents and public buildings.

A previous eruption of the volcano was recorded in August 2010.

1,300 Indonesians displaced on volcanic eruption
    November 3, 2013

About 1,300 villagers living at the foot of Mount Sinabung in Sumatra have been evacuated after an eruption, the National Disaster Management Agency said Sunday.

Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said four villages situated within three kilometers of the volcano were evacuated.

"Tremors are still occurring and thick black clouds are still being spewed," he said by phone.

Authorities have raised the volcano status to the second-highest level.

Mount Sinabung had been dormant for 400 years before it erupted on August 2010. There are nearly 130 active volcanoes across the Indonesian archipelago.

19,000 flee erupting Mount Sinabung volcano in Indonesia
    Tue 31 Dec 2013

Mount Sinabung has been erupting since September.
    (AFP: Sutanta Aditya)

More than 19,000 people have been displaced by a volcano in Indonesia that has been erupting for months and shot lava into the air nine times overnight.

Mount Sinabung on Sumatra sent hot rocks and ash 7,000 metres in the air last night and this morning, National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.

"Mount Sinabung remains on the highest alert level and we have warned there should be no human activity within a five-kilometre radius of the crater," Mr Nugroho said.

"On Monday night, 19,126 people had fled their homes, and we expect that number to rise."

Police and soldiers were patrolling the danger zone to evacuate people who have chosen to stay in their homes, Mr Nugroho added.

Mount Sinabung - one of dozens of active volcanoes in Indonesia which straddles major tectonic fault lines - erupted in September for the first time since 2010 and has been rumbling ever since.

In August, five people were killed and hundreds evacuated when a volcano on a tiny island in East Nusa Tenggara province erupted.

The country's most active volcano, Mount Merapi in central Java, killed more than 350 people in a series of violent eruptions in 2010.

Indonesian volcano erupts 30 times as 20,000 displaced
    January 4, 2014

KARO, Indonesia - An Indonesian volcano that has erupted relentlessly for months shot volcanic ash into the air 30 times on Saturday, forcing further evacuations with more than 20,000 people now displaced, an official said.

Mount Sinabung on the western island of Sumatra sent rivers of lava flowing through an evacuation zone and columns of volcanic cloud up as high as 4,000 metres (13,000 feet), National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.

"Hot lava spewed from the volcano some 60 times, reaching up to five kilometers (three miles) southeast of the crater. This outpour is the biggest we’ve seen in all the recent eruptions," Nugroho said.

Authorities had already told residents in a five-kilometre radius of the volcano to evacuate, and Nugroho said an expanded evacuation zone may be considered.

The number of people who have now fled the rumbling volcano since it began erupting in September last year has risen to 20,331, Nugroho said.

Mount Sinabung is one of dozens of active volcanoes in Indonesia that straddle major tectonic fault lines, known as the Ring of Fire.

It had been quiet for around 400 years until it rumbled back to life in 2010,and again in September last year.
