After Anti-China Protests in Vietnam, Chinese Flee to Cambodia

PHNOM PENH — Chinese citizens in Vietnam have begun crossing the border into Cambodia to escape violent protests over the South China Sea conflict.

Vietnamese Embassy spokesman in Phnom Penh, Trung Van Thong, told VOA's Khmer service the Chinese began crossing the border this week.

“They [Chinese] were not expelled from [Vietnam],” he said. “It is their personal decision. I do not know the reason why the Chinese no longer want to live there."

The number of Chinese who have come across from Vietnam is unclear and Cambodian officials have declined to comment on the border crossings, which took place after Chinese and Taiwanese factories were targeted by mobs in southern Vietnam.

Meanwhile the head of the Association of Khmer Vietnamese in Cambodia, Sem Chi, said his members plan to protest this week outside the Chinese Embassy in Phnom Penh.

But the Cambodian Ministry of Interior said such a protest would not be allowed.

"Foreigners cannot use Cambodian territory to stage a protest against another group of foreigners,” Khieu Sopheak said. “It is not allowed by law."

Cambodia has a sizable ethnic Vietnamese population and most members of the Khmer-Vietnamese Association are believed to be Cambodian residents.

Now there's a law the UK and US could do with.

it is funny when you think back to the vietnam war, first with the french then the us,
the chinese were the best buddies with the viets, so pumped most of the military supplies to them for the greater good of the red revolution against the capitalist running dogs and both of them supplied and trained pol pot and pathot (sic) lao,
then fell out over pol getting a bit cheeky so the viets invaded, and good on them,to get did of the prick, the chinese did not like that so had a bit of a border biff with the viets, now both capitalists goverments trying to grab what they can.
see korean and taiwanese factory owners are waving flags to tell the stage managed viets to only burn down chinese joints, though i laugh when you see how much the chinese claim of the south china sea, wonder they don't claim gulf of thailand too.

This is the same mistake McNamara and the US made. The Vietnamese historically don't like the Chinese they have been fighting the Chinese for a thousand years. In the Vietnam war they were fighting for the independence of their country and to oust who they believed to be the new colonials, the US.

Better to think inside the pub, than outside the box?
