PHUKET: A young Russian man is said to have drunk himself to death on Phuket, losing his heart and then his life to an unnamed woman.

According to a guesthouse manager in Patong and paramedics from the Kusoldharm Foundation charity, the body of the young man was discovered in his room at 2am this morning.

People who entered the room are reported to have found the young man dead, still holding three roses in his right hand and an empty bottle of Hong Thong Sangsom whisky in the other.

Officers from Kathu Police Station, which oversees Patong, the popular nightlife hub on Phuket's west coast, named the young Russian as Petr Zavyalov, 27.

Several other empty bottles of cheap Thai whisky of different brands were found in the room.

The manager of the guesthouse, who persuaded police to suppress the name, told officers that the Russian lived in the room with his Thai girlfriend.

However, he and staff often heard the pair arguing because the girlfriend complained that he was not giving her enough money.

The girlfriend had not been sighted at the guesthouse for some time, police were told.

Mr Zavyalov's body was taken to Patong Hospital.
