Malaysia : to help teachers spot 'gay children'

Malaysia holds seminars to help teachers spot 'gay children'

Light-coloured clothes and large handbags for boys listed as signs, as government forges ahead with anti-gay agenda

The Malaysian government has begun holding seminars aiming to help teachers and parents spot signs of homosexuality in children, underscoring a rise in religious conservatism in the country.

So far, the Teachers Foundation of Malaysia has organised 10 seminars across the country. Attendance at the last event on Wednesday reached 1,500 people, a spokesman for the organisation said.

"It is a multi-religious and multicultural [event], after all, all religions are basically against that type of behaviour," said the official.

The federal government said in March that it is working to curb the "problem" of homosexuality, especially among Muslims who make up over 60% of Malaysia's population of 29 million people.

According to a handout issued at a recent seminar, signs of homosexuality in boys may include preferences for tight, light-coloured clothes and large handbags, local media reported.

For girls, the details were less clear. Girls with lesbian tendencies have no affection for men and like to hang out and sleep in the company of women, the reports said.

Malaysia frowns on oral and gay sex, describing them as against the order of nature. Under civil law, 'offenders', both male and female, can be jailed for up to 20 years, caned or fined.

Actual prosecutions are rare, although former deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim has twice been tried for sodomy, in cases he called political conspiracies. He spent six years in jail, but the courts have since cleared him on appeal or dropped charges for lack of evidence.

Official intolerance of gay people has been on the rise. Last year, despite widespread criticism, the east coast state of Terengganu set up a camp for "effeminate" boys to show them how to become men.

The latest seminar for the teachers and parents was run by deputy education minister Puad Zarkashi, his office confirmed.

Zarkashi wasn't immediately available for comment but national news agency Bernama quoted him as saying that being able to identify the signs will help contain the spread of the unhealthy lifestyle among the young, especially students.

"Youths are easily influenced by websites and blogs relating to LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender] groups," he was quoted as saying.

"This can also spread among their friends. We are worried that this happens during schooling time."

They may hate gays, but when I was in Iraq, I had several of my helpers tell me that women are for to make babies and men are for fun.

    It's a choice

I once had a discussion with a moslem who claimed that homosexuality was a choice, not something one is born into.
I replied "For me, choosing between the blonde woman or the redheaded woman, or the asian woman, is a choice. Men do not even get on my list of choices. Is it a choice for you?" I am glad he did not have a pistol, it looked like his head would explode. "What about those unfortunates who are born with male and female genital parts, did they choose that in the womb?"
Personally, I think we range from one side to the other, with most at least 90% one way or the other. How can a 3 year old child 'choose' to play with dolls (boy) or play rough (girl), before they know what sexuality is? (Unless 'reared' in a pashtun home)
We clearly have just scratched the surface of understanding our genetic code, but we know far more than in the distant past. Persecuting people based on biological knowledge thousands of years old would be ludicrous if not so evil.

..then it's up to the parents to nip it in the bud before the child thinks it is normal behaviour and ends up becoming queer.

if i had caught one of my sons playing with dolls it would very quickly have been confiscated and replaced with a toy car or gun.

like you said, the child at that age doesn't know what sexuality is and that is where good parenting comes in.

What if the doll was a macho sort like Action Man or GI Joe sitting in a toy car with a toy gun?

I used to fill my Action Man doll heads with ketchup and then shoot them with my air rifle, does this mean I may have caught the gay? I mean, the doll had the action gripping hands and military uniforms and everything so I thought I was safe.

I should say that the little heads start to leak after being shot a few times so I used to tie them back up with tape to stop the ketchup leaking out, would you consider me a full-faggot or just somebody who was in danger and needed your good parenting skills to set me straight?

if you ended up straight, no harm done.

if you had a barbie doll you would have ended up queer though, unless you were also just using her for target prcatice!

I touched a Barbie doll once, but I immediately went out and shot some stuff afterwards because I am so insecure in my own sexuality and needed to re-affirm. I am sure you would understand.

Fanatic baiting can be so much fun.

Personally I prefer logic games where you attempt to convicne the nutter that the presence people they find intolerable is their got testing them to see of they can accept that the world is the way their got wants it or to see if they had the pride and arrogance to put them selves in gods shoes and pretend they are god themselves. Usually they haven't been preprogrammed with a rebuttal for this one; so they turn to their usual fall backs of hate, threats and associated unpleasantness.

Two Muslim gay men, deeply in love, tied the knot in France with the blessing of an imam.

Ludovic Mohamed Zahed, a French man of Algerian origin, and his South African partner Qiyam al-Din, were reportedly married in accordance to the Sharia (Islamic law) in the presence of a Mauritian imam named Jamal who blessed their union on February 12, 2012, according to a report in Albawbaba on April 2.

Psychologists slam guidelines to track LGBT symptoms as being harmful
    Sunday September 16, 2012

PETALING JAYA:The so-called guidelines to help parents and teachers track lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) symptoms in their childen have sterotyped the group, experts and psychologists here said.

Consultant paediatrician Dr Sim Joo Seng said the sexuality of a person may not be established until late puberty.

“Giving guidelines to teachers who are untrained to do so is a dangerous move.

“Even trained psychologists and adolescent psychiatrists have to assess properly when dealing with sexual problems,” he said, commenting on the guidelines that were distributed at a parental seminar in Penang on Thursday.

The guidelines, among others, cautioned parents about their sons wearing tight V-neck shirts and bright coloured attire and their daughters being frequently seen in the company of certain girls while ignoring others.

Dr Sim said the guidelines stereotyped the LGBT community and could lead to bigger problems such as discrimination and intimidation.

Clinical psychologist Sylvester Lim likened the guidelines to “a ridiculous attempt” to describe the LGBT community without any supporting research.

The Congress of Teaching Services in National Education (Kongres), however, has come out in support of the guidelines as “these help teachers to solve problems of youths with LGBT tendencies”.

Congress president Jemale Paiman said: “LGBT is not suitable for our Malaysian culture and we want to help those who have this problem.”
