    PickleAID:

Thailand coma Leeds teacher’s funds boosted by music festival

    Saturday 14 July 2012

VICTIM OF ASSAULT: Adam Pickles, pictured with son Benjamin, spent five weeks in a Thai hospital after the attack.

Friends and family of a coma-stricken teacher raised thousands of pounds towards his medical bill at a charity gig in Leeds.

The PickleAID music festival in honour of assault victim Adam Pickles boosted the fundraising campaign total to more than £76,000.

More then 200 people attended the event at the FullCircle Bespoke Design Emporium, off Kirkstall Road, on the same day the 40-year-old’s alleged attacker was arrested in Bangkok after a seven-week manhunt.

The event raised £5,000, with the figure expected to rise from an online auction of pledged gifts that were not snapped up on the day.

Mr Pickles’ dad, Andrew, said he and wife Adele, of Thorner, Leeds, were overwhelmed by guests’ generosity and thanked everyone involved

The 62-year-old said: “Although tinged with sadness it was a really fun afternoon and evening.

“We were able to talk with many of Adam’s and our own friends, some of whom we had not seen for many years, and many people who had never met Adam but had heard about the campaign and came along to give their support.”

Fundraisers hope their efforts will ease the financial burden on Mr Pickles’ parents.

The couple have had to remortgage their home and use their retirement savings to cover the cost of his £123,000 Thai medical bill and repatriation.

Mr Pickles, who taught at Wakefield’s Cathedral School before moving to Pattaya, Thailand, to teach at the Regent’s International School, spent more than five weeks in a Thai hospital after the May 17 attack.

He was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary last month where he is still in a coma, but showing signs of improvement.

News of the arrest of a 43-year-old Briton, named in reports as Sean Henry Tinsley, from Wolverhampton, has brought relief to the family.

But it has also brought the prospect of legal fees, which are likely to carry a hefty price tag along with Mr Pickles’ future rehabilitation costs.

Wolverhampton man accused of brutal attack abroad
    Saturday 14th July 2012

A 43-year-old man from Wolverhampton has been arrested on suspicion of carrying out a brutal road rage attack on a popular English teacher in Thailand, it emerged today.

Sean Henry Tinsley is accused of attempting to murder Adam Pickles in the resort of Pattaya – 80 miles east of Bangkok.

It is alleged that Mr Pickles was attacked from behind with a wheel brace after an incident in which a car was scraped. Tinsley was arrested at Bangkok International Airport and detained by the local police force.

Pattaya Provincial Court remanded Tinsley into custody for him to appear again at court at a later date.

A spokewoman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office confirmed they were helping a 43-year-old man with consular assistance following his arrest.

On the day of the attack in May, Mr Pickles, aged 40, is understood to have been returning from playing pool in Pattya, where he was head of English at the Regency International School.

He was later discovered by a passer-by and rushed to hospital, where he underwent two emergency operations to remove clots and bone from his brain.

After five weeks being cared for by the Bangkok Pattya Hospital, Mr Pickles, from Keighly, Yorkshire, was airlifted by a specialist air ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary last month.

It is believed that Tinsley had left Thailand after the alleged attack, but was arrested on his return to the country.

The parents of Mr Pickles, Andrew, aged 62, and Adele, 61, have now instructed a legal team to deal with the case as it progresses. They are also trying to cover the £80,000 costs to pay for hospital bills and the specialist transport that was used to return their son to England.

Mrs Pickles said: “Adam is still in a coma and still needing to fight off infections.

“However, he is moving much more than he was and seems to be understanding when we ask him to make certain movements.

“This is positive and gives us hope that he will surface from the coma soon.”

Man arrested over attack on teacher
    Saturday 14 July 2012

A BRITISH man has been arrested over the attack on former Cathedral Academy teacher Adam Pickles in Thailand.

Sean Henry Tinsley, 43, from Wolverhampton, was questioned by police in Pattaya over the weekend on suspicion of attempted murder and has been remanded in custody.

It is understood that Tinsley had left the country after the attack two months ago and was arrested at the border as he tried to re-enter Bangkok following a tip-off from UK authorities.

He is expected to stand trial and Mr Pickles’ parents, Andrew and Adele, who are having to re-mortgage their home and using their savings to pay for his Thai hospital bills, have now instructed a legal team to deal with the case.

Mr Pickles, who taught English at Cathedral Academy between 2001 and 2005, remains in a coma at Leeds General Infirmary after he was airlifted back to the UK just over a fortnight ago.

He had moved to Thailand seven years ago and was attacked as he made his way home from an evening out on May 17.

Mrs Pickles said: “It is a relief to us to know there has been an arrest - we hope and pray that this man is now kept off the streets until the official trial takes place.

“We do not want any other family to go through the hell we are experiencing. Adam is still in a coma and still needing to fight off infections.

“However he is moving much more than he was and seems to be understanding when we ask him to make certain movements. This is positive and gives us hope that he will surface from the coma soon.”

A concert called PickleAid was held on Saturday in Leeds to raise money for his repatriation costs.

And Cathedral Academy French teacher Dani Nicholls, who worked with Mr Pickles, has organised a charity race night for 8.15pm tonight at Thornes Cricket Club on Field Lane.

I've known Sean for about 9 years now, he's helped me out with visas several times. I have to say, the Sean I know, is not a cold blooded killer.
I will wait to see what the facts of this case are.

Sean Tinsley had already been previously arrested in Pattaya. In 2007 he was charged with selling fake visas to long term foreigners in Thailand, who did not want to go through official channels, through his company ‘The Visa Shop’.

Well now. We knows who done it. Just a matter of price to sort it out and exact revenge. That should be explained to the parents - a head stomping in the lockup would be quite cheap.

I used his company to sort a visa a couple of years ago. I found articulate and totally cognitive, with a polished veneer.

Hope you changed your passport since. People are getting pulled for old fake visa stamps even now from back in the days when that was common.

Thats the best way to sort out these meatheads who think they can get away with stuff like this.

An eye for an eye. Quick, just and effective.

Sends out a good message too.

One wonders just how discerning a person utilising a skanky, bent company for visa runners and overstayers might be?

He had a travel agent and had a few mini buses doing runs to the Cambodian border 3 times a week for visa runners, that was all legit. It was the non immigrant visas where people were sending their passports out the country that was what he was busted for if i remember.

It was a uk visa for a Thai. Saved the hassle of running up to Bangkok.

Do you think he knew what he was doing whilst caving someones head in with a wheel brace ?

We've all seen red at some point, but to actually smash someone over the head with a piece of steel and enough force to shatter someones skull is quite despicable. To then show no remorse and brag about it highlights this seemingly popular guy with some of you as the cnut of all cnuts.
