Bangkok: Passenger left B10m gold in taxi

Passenger left B10m gold in taxi | Bangkok Post: breakingnews

Passenger left B10m gold in taxi

An Ubon Ratchathani gold shop owner has reported he left a bag containing gold worth more than 10 million baht in a taxi in Bangkok on Wednesday evening, police said on Thursday.

Akekarat Kanokwannakorn, 60, told police that he left 500 baht weight of gold in the taxi.

Mr Akekarat said he was travelling from SAB intersection to Si Mum Muang market in Rangsit. He could not remember the taxi's licence plate number.

Mr Akekarat said he brought the gold with him to Bangkok because he wanted to change its markings, and that he planned to visit his relatives in Pathum Thani.

Police said a security camera had caght pictures of the taxi he was in, but the licence plate number could not be seen. This would make the search for the gold more difficult.

Akekarat Kanokwannakorn (L) asks police for help after he left behind 500 baht-weight of gold in a taxi.

A security camera captures the taxi a gold shop owner was sitting in on March 14, 2012.

maybe the next passenger in the cab found it, or at least that would be what the taxi driver would say if challenged.

Too bad the cab number's not visible - would have made for a great lottery number!

Dont we have the technology to first clean up the image and see what taxi company it belonged to them realize its a brand new model. That would be the start. I would guess that they can have a better shot of the plate if they simply go forward a few frames,or back a few frames and digitally enhance the numbers. I dont think the CC camera is still and going off every few seconds.
But then again I enjoy CSI..
But the next passenger argument will hold as has been pointed out many times in the "Taxi to raise fares thread". Too few issue receipts. No documentation where he went next.

Cabbie urged to return Bt13m worth of gold - The Nation

Cabbie urged to return Bt13m worth of gold

    The Nation
    Pathum Thani March 16, 2012 1:00 am

The owner of a gold shop in Ubon Ratchathani alerted police yesterday saying that he had left gold ornaments worth Bt13 million in a taxi on Wednesday evening, police said yesterday.

Akekarat Kanokwannakorn, 60, said he had left the 540 baht weight of gold in a pink Toyota Altis taxi that he had flagged down on Bangkok's Worachak Road to travel to Si Mum Muang Market in Pathum Thani's Klong Luang district. However, he said he could not remember the cab's licenceplate number.

Akekarat said he and wife, Surat, 58, had taken the gold ornaments to a shop in Bangkok's Yaowarat area to change the patterns.

Khu Khot police investigator Pol LtColonel Udom Sukprasert said the market's security camera had captured images of the cab the couple were riding in, but the licence number was not clear. He said it would be difficult to locate the cab, especially since there are some 20,000 pink taxis plying the streets in Greater Bangkok.

However, Udom said the cabbie should return the gold, because if he hung on to it, police would be able to gather enough evidence for an arrest warrant.

Police have been checking with other gold shops to see if any of them have bought ornaments according to Akekarat's description, while 20 taxi companies have been called upon to help locate the cabbie.

7.622 kg to be exact. That would make healthy stops for every door in the house.

I found a 50 pound note in a London taxi as an 18 year rushing to get the last train of the night back home from Victoria. Asked the driver to drop me in the Leicester sq instead and had a bloody good night with enough left over for a b and b

Fifty quid went alot further in the early 80s

The story said 10 million baht worth of gold which is about 6 kg.

But the driver returned 1 kg and now everyone is happy.

Surely they would know the location of the security camera, and they know the direction that the taxi was going in.
There's security cameras every hundred metres or less in big cities nowadays.
If this camera can't pick up the number plate then at least one of the dozens of others should.
My guess is that the money has already been picked up by the BiB and has been distributed.

He didn't lose the money. Maybe he's got a mia noi or used it to pay off gambling debts. It is a hard story to believe but we hear these left-it-in-a-taxi stories a bit too often here. Does he have a guard sitting at his gold shop? Why the hell would he travel like this to BKK. Was he picking up gold or selling it in Bangkok?

Usually these stories involve some kind of private lottery or community savings program winnings or other scam. The winnings or money owed get "stolen" from a motorcy left idling outside 7-11 while the owner goes to buy a hotdog!

So I suspect the same. The gold is/was payment for something the owner did not have so this story gets made up so now he has at least a bit more time to come up with 10 mil.
Better to think inside the pub, than outside the box?
I apologize if any offence was caused. unless it was intended.

The usual "I left shitloads in a taxi" stories are normally reporting the "salt of the Earth" honest taxi driver's human qualities in returning the sum or object.

I like this one better. Numb nuts doesn't deserve the gold back.

It annoys me when people leave masticated chewing gum in taxi's.
So when someone leaves a few kilo's of gold, I'll just consider it Karma.

I hate it when you get in the taxi and can't get all your bags in because some inconsiderate arse has left a sack of gold in there.

I hope he gets a nice fat reward. It must have been killing him deciding what to do. Keep it? Return it? Keep it? Return it? Keep it? Return it? Keep it? Return it? Keep it? Return it? Keep it and run away with my mia noi?
