    Protests topple Maldives leader
    7 Feb 2012

The president of the Maldives resigned today after violent protests over his order to arrest a senior judge.
Mohamed Nasheed, who in 2008 became the country's first democratically elected leader in three decades, stood down after police joined a rebellion against him.
He said: "I don't want to hurt any Maldivian. I feel my staying on in power will only increase the problems, and it will hurt our citizens. So the best option available to me is to step down."
Mr Nasheed ordered the arrest of Abdulla Mohamed, chief judge of the criminal court, for ruling that a government critic should be released.
Mr Nasheed, a former human rights campaigner, defeated Maumoon Abdul Gayoom just over three years ago. He is expected to hand over to vice-president Mohammed Waheed Hassan.
