Man Posing as Bank Officer Makes off with Vendor's Money
UPDATE : 7 February 2012
Pathum Thani police received a complaint from 28-year-old strawberry vendor at Thai Market Euy Boonroong that a man posing as a bank officer stole over 20,000 baht in cash from her right inside Kasikorn Bank's Thai Market branch.
The victim told the police she was about to deposit 55,000 baht into the cash deposit machine but when she put money into the machine, it returned more than 20,000 baht out. Then, a man, in his 50's and dressed like a bank officer, approached her and took the money from her hands before he counted them back and forth and put them back into the cash deposit machine. She thought he was a bank officer there to help her so she let him handled her money.
She went on to say the machine then started counting the money again after which the man quickly left the bank. Once the machine finished counting the banknotes, it reported an amount of 31,500 baht. She thought some money was still stuck inside the machine so she canceled the transaction and took all the cash out. Once she counted her money, she was shocked to find 23,500 baht missing and immediately realized that the man posing as a bank officer had taken it.
The police have warned the public about such scams and said the safest thing to do is to deposit money directly with tellers.
Police have gotten a still shot of the man in question from the bank's closed circuit camera and will try to find him.
