Maldives closes hundreds of luxury resort spas

By AP News Dec 30, 2011 4:45PM UTC

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — Maldives has ordered hundreds of luxury resorts to close their spas after protesters demanded a halt to “anti-Islamic” activities.

The Indian Ocean archipelago with 1,192 tiny coral islands is known for its exquisite resorts.

A statement from the president’s office said the government decided to close massage parlors and spas in the Maldives after an opposition-led religious protest last week called for their closure.

Thousands at the protest called on the government to halt what they called “anti-Islamic” activities. Sunni Islam is the official religion in the Maldives and practicing any other faith is forbidden.
"Slavery is the daughter of darkness; an ignorant people is the blind instrument of its own destruction; ambition and intrigue take advantage of the credulity and inexperience of men who have no political, economic or civil knowledge. They mistake pure illusion for reality, license for freedom, treason for patriotism, vengeance for justice."-Simón Bolívar

Was a fabulous place in 1977. One small island where foreigners could go. The only way to get there was through Sri Lanka (where I lived at the time); puddle-jumper plane from Colombo to Male. A shack where three Germans set up shop with an air compressor and scuba tanks. Some of the best diving in the world. Then they built an international airport with a longer runway, and the group tours started flooding in. Place was totally trashed within ten years. Sea turtles all killed off for shells to sell to China, huge underwater garbage dumps, prices sky high for everything. It was over. But I am lucky enough to remember diving with swarms of huge ocean turtles, eating $1 lobster, and drinking on the almost empty beach with Scandoslut tourist chicks.

Sounds great. I've never been and had considered it a few times. Now I'll never go. The idiots really have done it this time. But who knows, some people have short memories. The horror attack of mass rape and and murder in Egypt some dozen years ago probably isn't remembered by most of today's generation of tourists (though the Arab Spring will be fresh in their minds)
My mind is not for rent to any God or Government, There's no hope for your discontent - the changes are permanent!

^Yep. I got lucky, and hit it at the right time. Had four or five good trips there from '77-'79, while I was in Sri Lanka. Few unspoiled places left; you have to go further and further afield. One dive I will never forget, I was diving along the drop off, when what felt like a truck slammed into my back and smashed me into the wall, almost knocking me out. It was a grouper, about the size of a Volkswagon, just grazing along the wall and I was in the way. Also had my one and only really scary shark scare in the Maldives - the only serious one in hundreds of dives.

Could be a smartish move if they target Saudi/conservative Muslim guests in the future instead. Still lots of money sloshing around there..
Yes and no, I think a lot of places are assuming that, they might find that supply quickly outstrips demand.

Anyone who pays $150 us for a rice farmer's ex gig to rub perfumed oil into them is certifiable in my view.

Still, the Maldives can always rely on the wedding business.........

^You can see some of the locals trying to hold it back as the guy really goes off. Some looked uncomfortable and some looked like they were gonna laugh their asses off. Wonder what happened to the blessing dude after this was aired?

Why anyone would support this kind of totalitarian barbarity is beyond me. Boycott the monkey nations.
