    Probably stupid!!!

I know in America if you marry a American you have some reason to stay in america. Does the Same hold true for Thailand? I mean would I be able to get some other visa to stay in Thailand to help my family?

    Short answer Yes.
Long answer: Offically, you can get a Non-immigrant type "O" good for ninety days stay; this visa may be extended at the immigration office to a one year visa. You will have to show money in a THAI bank. Think it's still 400K Baht. I'm sure someone will be along later to give a more complete answer but those are the basics.

Prior to the recent announcement concerning immigration There were "options." The announcement had nothing to do with type "O" visas, but you never know. If you're in the US there are some consulates that will offer up a one year multiple entry visa good for 1 year, or fifteen months stay.

If you are married and hold a non O visa you can get it extended for 1 year periods, no need to do 3 month boarder runs or leave the country. You need a non O visa just a 3 month will do, all you marrige certificates, wife's tabian ban (house papers) her ID card ect and a letter from your Thai bank stating your current balance has to be at least 400,000 bhat.
The first one takes a while as they need a local police report (they will extend your visa during this time) after that it's just a trip every year to imigration to get the stamp.

Some of that may not be current and I'm not an expert on visa's but thats what I do

    yep it's the same.

You can also apply for a 1 x year multi entry non "o".You still have to leave the country every three months, but you can in effect get 15 months out of the Visa.(Do a border run just before the visa expires and you get another 90 Days)

For the multi-entry 1 x year all you need to show is your marriage cert, copy of wifes ID and house papers.

Can I just add that your wife must be present when you apply because she must have an interview.

Different places may have different rules:

For Hull in the UK a copy of the marriage certificate is all that is required, the whole thing is done by post and there is a 24hour turnaround.

    My Apologies.
A big case of DFA on my part there.

Your wife must be present for a one year extension but not for a multi-entry Non-Imm visa.

    Sorry
