Reporting back on my quick trip to Lao. I exited Thailand at Nong Khai and paid the 20 baht for the bus across the bridge. They have changed things a bit and Thailand has added an inside check point. Once in Lao, things were pretty much the same and I filled out the visa paperwork and paid the 1500 baht fee. Lao immigration processed it quickly and when I went to window 3 to gather my passport, i discovered that they added a camera at the window. The immigration officer asked how long I would be staying in Lao and I said one day. He then handed back my passport and change, this time in Thai baht and I walked to the entry point.

Once I entered Lao, I just made a left at the end of the building and another quick left into the exit area. I handed my passport to the immigration officer and he stamped used on the visa with no questions asked. I paid another 20 baht to cross the bridge back into Thailand. Then it was a matter of filling out the arrival and exit card and proceeding to the immigration officer who is now housed iniside a nice building. He stamped my passport with a 90 day stamp and the job was done.

All in all it took a little over an hour to complete the process and no time spent in Vientianne city. Much better than having to spend the night and pay for food and lodging. I was pleasantly surprised that the process was easy and pretty cost effective. The only negative was being fined 300 baht by the BIB on the Nong Khai road back to Udon for having a rear break light out. I felt this was highway robbery, but that is another story.

The O-A retirement Visa [ long stay ] is a piece of piss.

Its the time required to obtain the Police clearance which is the pain in the arse { 15 days including weekends } and the 7 day turnaround if posting ones Passport to Canberra from interstate.

3 weeks minimum all up, if one has the time no problem.

Big tip. The Very first thing to do is get the Police clearance in the post and on its way. I done it last which cost me a lot of extra time.

    Todly,

Regards the 0-A retirement visa. Mine expires on the 30 October 2015.

My next trip out of Thailand will be April 2015 for 6 weeks so when I return do they stamp me back in till 30 October 2015 ?

Next trip out will be in late September 2015 and I plan to return 29 October 2015.

On the 29th October 2015 will they stamp me in till 28 th October 2016 ?

Is this how it works if one plays the system correctly ?

    Thanks.

    Terry,
Nope, it don't work that way.

Every time you exit thailand and re-enter during the year validity of the visa itself (NOT the permission to stay until stamp) you're stamped back into the country for a whole calendar year from that date.

    Using your dates,
Exit April - Re-enter June-ish 2015 and you'll get a permission to stay until stamp dated out to June of 2016.
Exit September - Re-enter October 29, 2015 and you'll get a permission to stay until stamp dated out to October 28 2016.

NOW, once your visa itself expires (the date where it says must be used by or must enter thailand before) on the visa itself, to keep the second year's permission to stay valid, you'd need to buy a re-entry permit..

    Bogon tip #302

You can pay in $US, which should save you around 500 Baht depending on nationality.

Yes, you are correct Bogon. There were times I paid the fee in US dollars, but this time I did not have any handy. Another tip is to use US dollars for everything in Lao and you will save.
