Thread: What passport to use for a DN kid leaving Thailand

Left Thailand today, for the first time trying to use my daughter's UK passport.

At Phuket airport I was asked at check in if i had her birth certificate because I may be asked by immigration to show it. At immigation we got pulled over and asked if we had her Thai passport. So i produced that and was told she could only leave on that Thai passport.

My brain werent functioning too well and I was a bit hungover, but at the time I thought that was probably right and I will just show her UK passport at Malaysian immigration.

However, when I got there I was told she had to enter on the same passport that she left the previous country.

So can someone tell me where I messed up there?

Pertinent query. My kids are bound for the UK and I've been told they have to leave on Thai passports...

are you saying they needed to see the exit stamp on the Thai passport? and if so, they wouldnt let me use her UK passport, which would give her 3 months in Malaysia, rather than the 30 days she only gets on her Thai passport

Everytime we have left Bangkok wife and stepdaughter have used thai passport to exit and UK passport to enter UK or transit for example, flew yesterday Bkk to Heathrow via Frankfurt.
The reverse for travel to Bkk, exit UK on english passport,arrive onThai passport.

Airline checkin sometimes asks to see both passports when issuing tickets.

Not quite, Bangkok to London via Deli
Leave Thai on a Thai passport, show UK passport in Deli if asked , then in London show UK passport.

Thai passport is for Thailand and ASEAN country's thats it,

I have been doing this for many years with 4 kids, Thai passport for in / out of Thailand and China visa (easier residence / dependency process), UK passport for every other destination, including Malaysia.

Leaving Thailand with UK passport was clearly a no no, but you should have been fine arriving in Malaysia and showing the UK document. Some new ASEAN rule? Using the same passport as you left the previous country? How to check this? If you'd left any number of places (eg Europe ) there would be no exit stamp.

Strange

if you leave Thailand and go malayasia they want to see what country you just left, just security.

thats strange,
my kids hold Lao and aussie passports if we go to australia its usually via KL the kids stamp out of Lao with the lao passports, stamp into malaysia with the lao passports, then upon entring immigration again they produce the aussie ones, never had a problem with it so far

Must be a Malaysian thing Dillinger as I have never had that. like BLD above me. Leave Thailand on a Thai passport and enter Australia or any other country on a Aussie passport. Apart from Indonesia where we use the Thai one as they get a free visa.

Well that's bullshit..... Never had an issue with this travelling to Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Australia, UK, USA.....

That part is true. I won't say there are not exceptions but essentially is someone is a citizen of a country, they MUST use that passport to enter that country, not another one.

The only stamps my kids have in their Thai passports are Thai.

my daughter always used her thai passport for Laos and Cambodia (and Thailand) as she didn't need get a visa.

everywhere else,
Bali, Singapore, Nepal, HK, Malaysia always used her us passport

Could the problem be there is a third country involved, Malaysia. We all bring our kids back on the Thai passport to their home country. Dill was bring his kid back to a country with no ties to the child. Seems that would make a difference. Our kids are coming to their home by nationality. His is not.
