"This Phil character has been here years and is only now discovering that all Thais dont earn 6000 baht per month. It just underlines what a cock he is."

Yes, you are so right, becaude he wasn't up to date on current local salaries he is a cock. I completely understand your logic, are you Smeg's brother?

I have never asked a Thai that I haven't been sleeping with what they earn and usually don't bring it up anyway, why would I.

I normally have partners from the uni student-bank clerk-nurse-lower management (retail/hotel) field who generally earn around the 17 to 25K mark from what I gather.

As for automatically knowing what senior Thai engineers earn, I, as most expats here, have no reason to know... Or care.

For those who do know what every sector of Thai society earn, congratulations. Have a beer

In Thailand there are far too many coffin dodging poorly dressed alkies who accept crap salaries just to survive.

The Thai folks who employ these clowns are just as at fault.

I am out of teaching and into different pastures thank god, and am in negotiation for a real job with hard graft outside the country. I'll always be based here though.

It seems that Phil has come out of his incubator and seen that Thais are not all on anorexic salaries.

I dunno what to say to that so I'll keep it to myself.

    "Thank God" ?!?

Why did you get into teaching in the first place, and continue doing it if the relief at finishing brings a "Thank God" that's over exclaimation?

Because you wanted to be based here and simply had no other means, even though you hated doing it?

    That's absolutely pathetic.

Because I didn't know any better back then.

    Pathetic? I suppose you're correct.

In Germany it is not a bad paid job especially at secondary school. Teachers get paid above the average income.
Though it is the great exception to your rule that it is a poorly paid profession everywhere..

Today's newspaper had an article about local kindergarden teachers. they have not been paid for 8 months.

    Their salary.....$27 per month. Seriously.

I always know what the Thai (girl in my case) earns per hour, it's normally 500 to 1000B.

I know when I was at a Thai-famous university the only teacher I met who came close to my wage was a sociology prof who'd been there for 30 years.

I'm not one to be concerned how much I get paid or how much you get paid or how much we should be paid. All I know is I get three times what the Thai teachers get at my school and they work harder than me. Isn't that enough to know about the subject?

Can we assume they're not overly bothered by not being paid then?

In my limited experience, Thais often understate their salaries to make themselves appear poorer than they are. There are many benefits to appearing poorer than you are.

Richest guy always pays -- for everybody.

You might be surprised to know I've never even been to KSR and that I don't need money from teaching and that I like what I do very much and that I have eight toes you ain't seen yet.

I was working in an Isaan high school and the female head of the Thai English dept. had been working there for 10 years before I was born - and she was on less money than me.

Over 35 years in a job and some young foreign punk strolls in, has half the work load, half the duties and double the privileges and gets a bigger pay check to boot. But she was lovely, held no resentment and helped me out with lots of things.

A common and familiar story. On more than one occasion I've had to ask myself, "Are we really, truly worth it?"

And then I'm quickly back to grumbling and moping. Human nature isn't it?

But I've never, ever imagined that my salary should be on par with engineers and accountants...I can't get over that!

I've had more paid days off this month than a non-teacher Yank in Yankers gets in a year, nine! Royal birthday, day before royal birthday as the kids wrote birthday cards (homeroom teachers only ), four days sports week, three days of testing with the Thai teachers. I almost feel guilty.
