I think a person could do fine on 40K. After all you can live rather cheap here if you have a mind to.

Thai people manage on much less.

A simple room without a/c can be found for 2k a month. A person can eat for less than 100baht a day. Say another 100 baht a day for transportation and laundry, 2k for miscellaneous shit adds up to 10K, leaving you 30K in the bank. You'd be living like a monk but worse things could happen. Like blowing all your hard earned money of booze and women and slithering back to your home country broke, nursing a bad liver.

The key is having an mind to.

I know a fellow who can here with nothing, taught english in BKK for a while saved his pennies and later opened a nice burger place in Pai. If you don't believe me talk to Ed at the burger place in Pai. He's doing well for himself.

Seems the biggest problem now is meeting the money targets that are imposed by immigration as a condition for the visa.

No. But no reason to change visa to retirement I would think.

I duuno how you do it, I spend at least 50 PCM, no rent payments, very rare occasions go out.
Wife and two kids but wifey can live on weeds, kids just have whatever I am having, so the cost for them is not much, but still struggle to make 50 K stretch, in fact I am always above it.
When I ws in BKK it was 2.5 times that amount.

Some people like nice luxury things and some people don't. If you do then you have to earn the money to pay for them, if you don't... you don't and if you do anyway... you end up with loads of money in the bank

I think one should always be thinking about saving, and on 40K you ain't going to be saving much, especially in BKK. There's more to life than covering expenses.

You can live very cheaply here. Take advantage of the situation by saving as much as you can. I'm able to sock away 30 to 40K a month, which allows me to enjoy traveling around Thailand and to save a bit for the future.

I work private lessons to add to my income-luckily my job only requires 12 hours a week. I'm always surprised at colleagues who don't take advantage, living paycheck to paycheck on 40K a month. Not good.

    that's it.

I have ample time to earn a bit of extra.

    I'd rather not bother though.

TD is a full time hobby.

one full time job is enough for me. far too lazy to do extra privates. i do feel that it's a hard struggle if you don't have some cash saved in your home-country though

No-one knows what tomorrow will bring.

Learn the lesson of the ant. Work today, store for tomorrow.

To live purely for the present will bring its share of future heartaches.

I think some kind of middle ground would be more appropriate, but I prefer to follow the example of the sloth

Actually 40k a month is a lot of money. You think of managing 40k when mia noi enters your life! You'll start struggling when you have second mia noi and you definitely fuck yourself up if you have third. Even 100k won't be enough then.

I reckon there's ways around this conundrum. Through a little hard work and luck I'm in a position to profit from some very lucrative extra classes at 1500+/baht an hour. Working extra doesn't have to mean the death of one's free time. All told I still work less than 20 hours a week. And if you ask anyone that knows me, I ain't that smart!

Just bringin this up because "time or money" is a bit of a false choice and appears to be a self-fufilling prophecy for some folks I know.

^20 hours teaching a week is about right, any more is a ball ache, any less could be seen as lazy. I do less than 20 most weeks.

That's pretty incredible. This is my first year teaching here in BKK and I'm on a 35K a month contract. I could make more of course if I worked more days/hours but I try to live by the adage that it is better to work to live than vice versa, so I'm happy with my 5 day, 22 hour workweek. It suits me for now.

Anyway, I do just fine on that salary. Even manage to put a little bit away every month for my eventual visit home in the Spring. This despite the fact that I am paying twice as much as I should in rent (soon to be rectified) and eating out with my gf every day as well fun stuff on the weekends.

I am not bragging or anything but just contrasting my money situation with Peterpan and wondering where he spends it all. I know he's got a family and, uh, certain hobbies that can be pricey. Is that where the money flows?

Here's an email I just received from a Thai recruiting agency:
My name is XXXXX and I am the Human Resources Manager fora Thai company called Mediakids here in Bangkok, Thailand. We are a placement company in Thailand with 60 government schools and need to place over 160 applicants in May and November 2008 around Thailand. We have an outreach program whereby we place teachers or people who would like to teach in Thailand in rural schools. This is a great opportunity for people whowish to experience a different culture and have the adventure of a life
    time.

The applicants are paid well and given orientation courses and free accommodation over a 4month semester. Our next semester begins in May 2008.

We need people who have degrees and who have TEFL,TESOL, EFL qualifications.
Four-month contract? What's the pay? Is the orientation paid for? And what's the salary, number of teaching hours, number of students, size of classes?

A strange pitch with little info, however I'll post more info when they get back to me
