The belief that Thailand has never been colonized is also incorrect, because Siam was in fact a semi-colony throughout the colonial era with the cooperation of the Siamese rulers who benefited from cooperating with the colonial powers at the time. Although Siam was not an official colony, it never escaped being part of the colonial economic networks from the beginning. Siam voluntarily or involuntarily entered into the colonial economy without the colonial powers having to make it an official colony. The behaviour of Siam in the post-colonial era was not unlike that of the former colonies in the region.

I think "colonization" was meant to imply Thailand was never "colonized" by the Europeans or the Japanese after it became a single, unified nation.

Early history depicts the area of what is now Thailand as being dynamically, comprised of several different kingdoms, some of which were sometimes controlled by the Khmers and sometimes controlled by the Burmese.

But regardless, the history of Thailand is filled with intrigue and adventure.

Yes they are, and that's why Thai children are proud about not speaking English.

Seems to me Thais generally lack self-confidence w/regard to speaking English. They figure they'll lose Face if the words come out wrong.

I met a local kid the other day who reinforces what you say, Bob, about being proud not to speak English. When I asked him in Thai if he spoke any English, he was offended! Said NO! I speak Thai! Well, good luck with that attitude I say...

They are waking up now to the fact that the rest of ASEAN is using English as a common language and the fact that their boast has become their curse.

^ Some adults are, but come on, when I was 10 years old having a parent or teacher tell me that learning something now was going to help me as an adult went in one ear and out the other.

When I get really frustrated I think back to what an idiot I was at age 10. My World was not much bigger than these Thai kids.

Yes. But they don't talk about it. It's is a terrible subject, Thai like Thai and they will never admit they are missing the point. You better keep your mouth shut.

They study Chinese at school too ... and they suck at it. What's their excuse for that?

Speaking of Chinese, they HAVE been colonised ... by the Chinese! Not politically, but genetically. They've insidiously snuck in, changed their names to sound like Thai names, mixed their genes with the population and taken over just about every level of business and government. Well done Mr Wong!

"Never been colonised" ... my arse!
You can use logic to justify anything. That's its power. It’s also its flaw.
