    Bording school experience or student's/parent's requirements.

    Have any members taught in boarding schools in Asia?

    Here are some items which may or may not have be available/provided.

    1. Highly scattered population, children have to travel long distances to get to school, which is very inconvenient.

    2. If schools were to be built in every place the students live, it would be very difficult to ensure adequate teachers and quality of teaching in each school.

    3. Local governments set up boarding schools according to actual needs to ensure all children's equal right to education,

    4. The rights and freedoms of all ethnic groups, including the freedom of religious belief and the freedom to use and develop their own spoken and written languages, are fully protected.

    5. It is entirely up to the students and their parents whether to go to boarding schools or not.

    6. Students can choose to go home on every weekend, holiday and festival, as well as during the winter and summer breaks.

    7. Parents can visit their children at school any time and take their children home whenever needed.

    8. Schools open courses of traditional culture, such as language literature and folk dance.

    9. Traditional food unique to the area are provided.

    10. Students are allowed to wear traditional dresses at school.

    Are there compulsory standards in Asia, or elsewhere, if you have had any experience?

    Yup, I’ve visited Chinese boarding schools in which the parents live 40 minutes away… guess the parents hate their own children.

    It could be beneficial if run by a wholesome organization, such as by Catholics.

    Thank you for your replies.

    There are 10, shall we say, requirements listed above, that a countries bording schools are required to provide.

    Some Asian countries may or may not, have more, the same or less. As you work in bording schools, do your countries boarding schools have less, similar or more standard requirements they must adhere to?

    Requirements for a boarding school, or really anything else in Thailand? Are you serious?

    I worked at a boarding school where the students stayed full time at the school as they were from up north. They equated it to living in a prison as they weren't allowed off school grounds.

    I've had students who lived at a boarding school during the week and went home on Friday and reported back by Sunday evening. This was due to most of the students living too far from the school to commute. Again, prison like as they were not allowed off school grounds unless they were with their parents.

    Most of your 10 rules are nonsense in Thailand, for example, number 10. Students are allowed to wear the uniforms the school requires them to wear during school hours. After that, they can wear street clothes that are appropriate for their age and culture.

    Thank you for your reply regarding Thailand.

    I was assuming most/all countries would have regulations their boarding schools would be required to follow. As they do have to the responsibility of ensuring the students safety .... which for non boarding schools students parents have responsibility.

    Yes boarding schools have standards to meet. Some more some less than your list above. Eg: CIS, NEASC, COBIS, FOBISIA.

    I don’t understand why you think non boarding parents have any responsibility re: boarding students

    The non boarding school parents are responsible for their own children's actions, morally and possibly legally. If you had raised children you would understand.

    One from your list:

    "Under its By-Laws, FOBISIA’s aims and objectives are to:

    1. Keep abreast of educational and related developments in Britain and in the international context;

    2. Promote excellence of British-style education in FOBISIA schools;

    3. Celebrating the community of British national heritage and the cultural identities of host countries and student bodies;

    4. Provide opportunities for inter-school competitions and enrichment programmes;

    5. Facilitate school improvement through shared programmes of professional development to address Members’ individual needs;

    6. Explore co-operative initiatives to the benefit of Members;

    7. Respond to the changing needs of the Member school communities in the region;

    8. Promote the Federation and its Members;

    9. Foster links, world-wide, with other groups of British International Schools; and

    10.Make representations to official bodies and governments to recognize the needs and aspirations of the Federation and its Members as British organisations."

    Of the ten "aims and objectives" only two, 4 and 7 are aimed at assisting student's.

    I didn't work or attend any boarding school, but I know of 2 boarding schools in PH. One of them is a science-based high school (grades 7 to 12), another is a an art-based high school (same grades). Both are run/ operated by the govt and the students are considered as scholars. They don't pay tuition fees and get a small stipend from the govt. I think the students had to buy their own uniforms.

    One is called "Philippine Science High School" (PSHS) and the main/ first campus is in Quezon City, Metro Manila. (Now, there are satellite campuses but during my time, it was only the main campus.) The students stay in dorms inside the campus, food is provided. They're not allowed to leave the campus during the week but allowed to go home to parents during weekends. AFAIK they have a very STEM-intensive curriculum & some students get burned out.

    To be admitted to this school, pupils must take 2 sets of exams. They must pass the 1st exam to qualify for 2nd exam. I participated in this when I was 11/ 12 y.o. The 1st exam was taken in one's province. For the 2nd exam, we had to take it at the main campus in Metro Manila. Our science teacher accompanied us & we hired a minivan forbthe trip. I think there were 6 of us who passed the 2nd exam from my elementary school but none of us enrolled. All of us decided to enroll in a local science high school.

    For me, my reason was that I didn't want to be away from my parents/ home at that time & none of my classmates went (I didn't want to be alone). For the year after mine (same school), I think 3 or 4 of them enrolled in that school. I did have some classmates in uni who were from that school - they were very smart & driven.

    There's another boarding school, "Philippine High School for the Arts" (PHSA). It was a pet project of Imelda Marcos in the late 70s or early 80s. To get admitted, pupils must first pass an academic test. After they pass that, they must pass the art test. The pupil must have formal training in a field of art, such as music (piano, violin, cello, etc), dance (ballet, folk), visual arts (painting, drawing). When the students decide to enroll, they & the parents attend an orientation. The students live on campus & are given free food & lodging. The students study academic subjects in the morning and practice their art in the afternoon.

    The school is located in Mt Makiling, Laguna province. The students go to Manila during Fridays to meet/ be tested by their art teachers. For the ballet dancers, they go to the headquarters of Ballet Philippines. For the pianists, they go the houses of their teachers and play the piano/ show the teacher of their progress. Every year, they have a group recital/ performance. In their final year, the musicians have a solo recital. The dancers stage a dance production. The school only takes in very few students per year (around 20?) so competition is tough. I know some ppl who enrolled in this school. One of them is a ballerina who now lives/ works in Germany (as a ballerina).

    Last year (or 2 yrs ago), there was a case of sexual harassment against a male teacher. It was in the news. The complaints were made by present & former students. Accdg to the news, it's still under investigation. Some of the teachers live on campus (as "guardians") while others live in nearby towns. There's a shuttle bus for employees who don't live on campus.

    *****
    For both the science & art high schools, both were very tough and some get burned out or get " kicked out" if they can't pass the standards.

    Looking back, I'm glad that I didn't enroll in that science HS in Manila. I think the pressure would've been too much. I enrolled in a science HS in my province. It was govt-run & tuition fee was reduced. I lived at home, had pets, had some hobbies (joined the choir, cheering squad, had friends) - had a normal teenage life.

    Jesus fucking kerist, but you are thick.

    the Aims and objectives of an organization are not the rules or accreditation points for a school to follow. You cannot compare the two.

    Same granddaughter went to primary school at catholic school here in Roiet. One of the best and hard to get into. Not a boarding school so had a 20km commute.

    OhOh, no idea what the 10 points are for. Boarding or private schools?
