As expected, current events and the fear of terrorism are a welcome excuse for racism and prejudice:

A new report lists a host of examples of crime and intimidation from arson and suspected racist murder in Germany and Spain to pork fat being smeared on a mosque in Italy.

The report from the European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia called on leaders to strengthen policies on integration, and on Muslims to " engage more actively in public life."

It also highlights the lack of reliable data, pointing out that only one country - the United Kingdom - publishes criminal justice data which specifically identify Muslims as victims of hate crime incidents.

But this is in the UK, and it doesn't examine whether there has been a rise in one or the other, there are no data for this.
The perception is that hate-crime against Muslims is on the increase.

I think that's a bit of an exaggeration. The most recent riots in France were triggered by the deaths of two young immigrants who were being chased by the police. In fact, a French report published this year virtually says the police were to blame for chasing the young men into an electricity sub-station and then not helping them when they were electrocuted.

I'm not saying the resulting problems were insignificant, but this is hardly the same as indiscriminate attacks on people BECAUSE OF THEIR RELIGION.

You are suggesting the two are the same, and they clearly aren't.

Aye, and there's the rub. Statistics can be interpreted in many different ways and, given that this is prepared by an organisation called the European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia, then I would hardly expect any statistics to be perceived any other way.
