Alps Warming At Double The Average Global Rate, New Study Confirms

About 20 years ago, melting ice high up in the Italian Alps exposed the 5,000-year-old body of Ötzi the Iceman, a stunning discovery that gave unprecedented insight into human life during that bygone era — not least exciting of which being an epic battle for survival during his final days. Now just miles away scientists have found evidence giving further insight into our current era, the Anthropocene, in which mankind is changing the global climate and ecology of the planet. A 2,600-year-old leaf found from a larch tree near the site of Ötzi’s discovery reconfirms that glaciers on the Italian Alps, which had remained frozen year-round for thousands of years, are now melting.

“Our first results indicate that the current atmospheric warming at high elevation in the Alps is outside the normal cold range held for millennia,” Paolo Gabrielli, a scientist at Ohio State University and leader of a six-nation team of glaciologists who made the find, said. “This is consistent with the rapid, ongoing shrinking of glaciers at high elevation in this area.”

The scientists presented their findings in San Francisco last week at the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union. Gabrielli said that the Alto dell’Ortles glacier that they drilled ice cores into had not shown signs of melting for thousands of years until about 30 years ago.

The research team is especially interested in better understanding why the Alps are warming at about twice the average global rate. They want to determine if the highly populated surroundings might be contributing to the melting by causing soot to gather and darken the surface of the glaciers, which would attract more heat.

The research, which took place in 2011, found that the first 100 feet of the glacier is made up of thin layers of partially melted snow, built up over hundreds of years, which then turns to solid ice. The researchers found the leaf about 240 feet beneath the surface, encased in solid ice, further confirming that the glacier had remained unchanged for thousands of years.

Glaciers are not stationary objects, but slow-moving masses, making them hard to study without the direct observation which only goes back a few hundred years. However as glaciologists continue to study them, and discover ancient relics and climactic patterns, more valuable information about climate change and human evolution in general is likely to emerge.

One climatic trend that is directly visible — and visibly disappointing — to many is the shrinking skiing season in the Alps.

“The indicators that the Alps are warming up is clear. These findings are worrying, very worrying — maybe not for right now but for the second half of the century,” meteorologistGilles Brunot told Ski The World earlier this year.
Brunot said that at lower lying elevations under 1,000 meters there’s been around 40 percent less snow over the last 50 years.

“What the evidence shows is that since the 1990s there has been a rapid rise in temperatures in the mountains and since the 1960s there has been a slower, but evident, trend of less snow at lower altitudes,” he said.

    ________________________________

The Alps are warming at twice the global rate, and the glaciers are everywhere in retreat. Alto dell'Ortles is the highest glacier in the eastern Alps, at 3,900 metres: its ice is likely to hold much more evidence of climate change and human impact.

You have been told that the paper that published that claim was seriously flawed and has been retracted. It is a false claim. Disinformation propagated by the denialist site you linked to.

2013 will go down as the year that registered Australia's hottest day, month, season, 12-month period - and, by December 31, the hottest calendar year.

Weather geeks have watched records tumble. These tallies include obscure ones, such as the latest autumn day above 45C (Western Australia's Onslow Airport at 45.6C on March 21), the hottest winter's day nationally (29.92C , August 31), and even Wednesday this week, with the hottest-ever 9am reading (44.6C, at Eyre weather station near the WA-South Australian border).

''We're smashing the records,'' says Professor Andy Pitman, director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate System Science at the University of NSW.

''We're not tinkering away at them - they're being absolutely blitzed.''

It is. Humans with brains and dexterity like ours have been around for 200,000 years, but were forced to live in small bands of prowlers for 190,000 of them. When the climate finally stabilized, the sea didn't advance or retreat 50 miles anymore, weather patterns became predictable and they knew they could harvest at the same time next year again, they settled and built civilizations.

2013 will go down in the record books as one of the 10 coldest years in the U.S. since 1895. This chart, from Real Science, shows the average temperatures recorded at all NOAA USHCN stations from 1895 to the present:

As Real Science points out, NOAA does not report temperatures as they are actually recorded at the time. Rather, NOAA alters the historical record to make past temperatures look lower so as to bolster its bogus global warming claims:
NOAA will reporting something very different, because they subtract up to 1.7 degrees from older temperatures. Essentially all reported US warming is due to a hockey stick of temperature adjustments, which makes the past appear to be much colder than what the thermometers measured at the time. (They of course do not mention this in their press releases.)
Climate scientists get billions of dollars in funding from the U.S. government, and they serve their paymasters by “adjusting” the data. Climate alarmism isn’t just misguided, it is corrupt.

Antarctic tourist ship trapped by sea ice

(CNN) -- Passengers on a Russian polar expedition ship off Antarctica are getting a whiter Christmas than they probably wanted.
The MV Akademik Shokalskiy, with 74 people aboard, got trapped in ice and is waiting for other ships with ice-breaking capabilities to reach it, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said

2013 marks the 17th year of no warming on the planet. Almost everything that could go wrong did go wrong for the cause of global warming

2013 has been a gloomy year for global warming enthusiasts. The sea ice in the Antarctic set a record, according to NASA, extending over a greater area than at any time since 1979 when satellite measurements first began. In the Arctic the news is also glum. Five years ago, Al Gore predicted that by 2013 “the entire North polar ice cap will be gone.” Didn’t happen. Instead, a deflated Gore saw the Arctic ice cap increase by 50% over 2012. This year’s Arctic ice likewise exceeded that of 2008, the year of his prediction. And that of 2009, 2010 and 2011.

Weather between the poles has also conspired to make the global warming believers look bad. In December, U.S. weather stations reported over 2000 record cold and snow days. Almost 60% of the U.S. was covered in snow, twice as much as last year. The heavens even opened up in the Holy Land, where an awestruck citizenry saw 16 inches of snow fall in Jerusalem, almost three feet in its environs. Snow blanketed Cairo for the first time in more than 100 years.

2013 marks the 17th year of no warming on the planet. It marks the first time that James Hansen, Al Gore’s guru and the one whose predictions set off the global warming scare, admitted that warming had stopped. It marks the first time that major media enforcers of the orthodoxy — the Economist, Reuters and the London Telegraph – admitted that the science was not settled on global warming, the Economist even mocking the scientists’ models by putting them on “negative watch.” Scientific predictions of global cooling – until recently mostly shunned in the academic press for fear of being labeled crackpot – were published and publicized by no less than the BBC, a broadcaster previously unmatched in the anthropogenic apocalyptic media.

2013 was likewise bleak for businesses banking on global warming. Layoffs and bankruptcies continued to mount for European and North American companies producing solar panels and wind turbines, as did their pleas for subsidies to fight off what they labelled unfair competition from Chinese firms. Starting in 2013, though, their excuses have been wearing thin. China’s Suntech, the world’s largest solar panel manufacturer, has now filed for bankruptcy, as has LDK Solar, another major firm. Sinovel, China’s largest manufacturers of wind turbines and the world second largest, reported it lost $100-million after its revenues plunged 60%, and it is now closing plants in Canada, the U.S., and Europe.

While these no-carbon technologies get buried, carbon rich fuels go gung ho. Last month Germany fired up a spanking new coal plant, the first of 10 modern CO2-gushers that Europe’s biggest economy will be banking on to power its economy into the 21st century. Worldwide, 1200 coal-fired plants are in the works. According to the International Agency, coal’s dominance will especially grow in the countries of the developing world, helping to raise their poor out of poverty as they modernize their economies.

All that smoke will help cool the planet down ..... next time the sun starts warming again !

Implied falsehood. Ice in total is diminishing.

Extreme weather events are part of climate change and require more energy. Energy comes from global warming.

Same old shit. No concern to the conclusions drawn.

Where's that graph with the flashing trends on it again...

Heat is a form of electromagnetic energy residing in the infrared part of the spectrum.

Heat moves towards cold in a process that establishes an equilibrium as defined by Newtons 2nd law otherwise known as entropy.

An excess of heat is what is driving the increasing number of extreme weather events around the globe, both summer and winter events.

Posting up these weather events is not evidence against global warming. It is evidence for global warming.

Not us yet, but the future of the next generation and beyond will be bellicose. We are organized in nation states with little solidarity with the people beyond the borders, heck, not even our own. Many of them will lose much of their fertile land, flooded by saltwater here, droughts there, and washed away by torrential rains over there. They will be hungry and angry. Now you can't just go to Baffinland and grow corn when it's warm enough up there, there's only rocks, no top soil. Takes centuries to build it up, and stable weather patterns.

I very much agree with your post.

Except for the hope that there will be stable weather patterns, just new and different. If the past is any guidance there will be no stable weather patterns to rely on. The last few 10.000 years were a notabale exception to very unregular patterns. It was that unique stability that allowed us to buid a civilization. It will be hard to cling to that in the future.

you lot make me laugh .
Lies ? do you believe the governments employment , inflation figures etc ?
    of course not !
but you lap up the climate temp figures .

We are no better than Winston Smith in 1984 , he has to listen to the propaganda about iron steel production going up so many %, but is, like everyone else short of razor blades...

    Part One

    1
It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen. Winston Smith, his chin nuzzled into his breast in an effort to escape the vile wind, slipped quickly through the glass doors of Victory Mansions, though not quickly enough to prevent a swirl of gritty dust from entering along with him.
    brrrrrrrrrrrr
who wants to be cold ?
lets try and see if there really is a way to warm the Earth up .

I have been lied to from the sixties by the experts in all areas, medical scientific, politicians and even though I never lived in the U.S.A their varies Government agencies where so powerful in brainwashing the countries under their control. Now I hate them all and don,t believe anything they say. A Thai bar girl has more integrity.

    A Visit From ‘Saint Joe’
By Joe Bastardi Dec. 18, 2013

((With apologies to Clement Clark Moore.)

‘Twas the week before Christmas, when all through the news,
There were reports of record cold, so many were confused.
Told global warming is why we should care,

And that the point of no return would soon be here.

The children were bombarded with tales of dread,

While visions of climate disasters were stuck in each little head.

And mamma in her Prius, and I on my bike,

To save the planet, got rid of the cars that we like.

When suddenly in the data there arose such a clatter,

The earth was not warming, what could be the matter?

The warming stopped, as quick as a flash,

Leaving proponents in sack-cloth, bathing in ash.

For far too common was new-fallen snow,

More than forecasted, temperatures 0 or below.

And, what to my wondering eye there appears,

But an uptick in sea ice, and even more polar bears.

With a little old driver, called the PDO,

I knew in a moment it had to be so.

Howling like beagles fearing the shame,

AGW pushers called skeptics many a name!

"Now, Denier! now, madman! now neanderthal, you’re lying!

You’re an idiot! you’re stupid, know nothing, we’re frying!

To the top of the chart! breaking through the temperature wall!

The warmings out of control, it’s frying us all!”

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,

This is the worst drought ever, global warming is why.

So up to the IPCC the climate pushers flew,

With a gravy train of grants, and politics too.

Make economies pay, we need no proof,

Just keep saying temperatures are going through the roof.

With the media complicit, my head was turning around,

To see the global temperature level off and then come down.

The warming had stopped, in their mouth was their foot,

Exposing the scam, and making off with the loot.

Readjusting temperatures, from many years back,

Peddling disinformation to the media pack.

At conferences they would drink and make merry!

While the deceit grew in a way, that made it quite scary!

For the tide it had turned, there was cold that would show,

You can’t say it’s warmer, if there’s too much snow.

The cold that was showing led to chattering of teeth,

As the cycle came full circle, not unlike a wreath.

The face of global warming had become a subject smelly,

Their position as “solid,” as a bowlful of jelly!

Hockey sticks broken, sea ice on the increase,

I laughed when I heard their excuses not cease.

Events we all knew were something ahead,

Were twisted into worst ever, something to dread.

How dare mother nature destroy AGW’s life’s work,

These deniers are as nasty as a Miley Cyrus Twerk.

But the data is there and everyone knows,

The temperatures leveled off while CO2 rose!

So when in the wire, you hear the cold wind whistle,

The AGW agenda is ready for dismissal.

So let me exclaim, as this fades out of sight,

“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!”

oh dear , that ship that is stuck in the Antartic ice ,
is still stuck, and the ice breaker rescue ship is having to keep it's distance ,
It's summer there , but very bad weather .
It's heat that makes the energy to drive storms is it ?
well the Antartic seems to be having plenty of blizzards without any heat .

A Chinese icebreaker headed to the Antarctic region to rescue a vessel stalled Friday due to bad weather and icy conditions.

The ship Xue Long, which means Snow Dragon in English, was just shy of seven miles from the stranded Russian ship when it was forced to stop on Friday, CNN reports. The MV Akademik Shokalskiy has been stuck in ice since Monday and sent a satellite distress signal for help on Christmas. Capt. Wang Jiangzhong said it may be two more days before the Chinese government ship reaches the vessel.

The captain also said that should conditions worsen, the crew may need help from one of three icebreakers en route to help the Russian vessel, but the ship has a helicopter on board for medical emergencies. Australia’s Aurora Australis and the French ship Astrolabe are also headed to rescue the 74 passengers and crew members on board the Russian vessel.

The MV Akademik Shokalskiy was 15 days into the second leg of a climate change research expedition when it wedged into ice of up to 10 feet. Expedition leader Chris Turney said everyone on board remains safe.

If it were colder down there, icebergs and sheets wouldn't float around and surround ships, but be frozen in place. You watched it hundreds of times on TV and in cinemas that ships get stuck when ice closes in on them driven by the wind, and never trying to break through. If they get stuck this way, they just reverse. It never happens during the winter because ships can't get through anyway. Titanic sank in April, when spring sent the iceberg her way.

You are for me what the gays are for you, but foolishness is a greater threat to the our race than AIDS.
