Taliban kill British soldier
By JEROME STARKEY
A BRITISH soldier was killed in a firefight in Afghanistan yesterday — the first since troops were posted to drug-infested Helmand province.
Two others from a mobile patrol were seriously injured in the early evening clash with Taliban fighters.
All three soldiers were from 16 Air Assault Brigade based in Colchester, Essex — which took control of the troubled region in the south west of the country six weeks ago.
The injured men were rushed to Camp Bastion for medical treatment.
A Ministry of Defence spokeswoman said: "A mobile patrol was engaged in a firefight against suspected Taliban forces. Sadly, as a result of this engagement one UK soldier was killed."
Defence Secretary Des Browne today said: "My principal thoughts are with the friends and family of the soldier who was killed.
"It is a terrible time for them and they have to be my first priority."
But he said the UK troops were part of an important peace mission.
Mr Brown said: "We must achieve our objective of making this a better country not only for the Afghan people, but also we mustn’t allow it to become a haven for terrorism again."
The identity of the dead soldier will not be released until next of kin have been informed.
More than 3,300 British soldiers are currently serving in Afghanistan.
The latest casualties come just days after Taliban warlord Mullah Amir Hamza al-Razi pledged to inflict a "teeth-breaking" defeat on British forces.
He said it was his "Islamic duty" and warned: "We have plans for the enemies. Throughout our history, we have defeated them many times, but they do not understand. That is why we have to give them a teeth-breaking defeat again."
Until yesterday just two soldiers had been killed in action in Afghanistan since 2001.
BRITISH tanks stormed into a hotspot Iraqi town yesterday to rescue a squaddie seriously wounded during a six-hour gun battle.
Five insurgents died in the clash after setting an ambush at a market near Al Amarah. The wounded soldier, from the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment, was “stable” last night.
You sure you took control?which took control of the troubled region in the south west of the country six weeks ago.
