And, I do agree that some places in the U.S. are like war zones....but they are few and far between. Most places are as safe as places in the UK and Europe, so, it's unfair to think everyone's killing each other simply due to a few random events.

Guns are necessary in some parts of the U.S. unless you're suggesting that we don't control dangerous animals out here in the west.

Give me good police protection and the only time I'll have a gun is at the shooting range.

You want a legitimate reason for owning a gun? This would be a good reason to have a rifle/shotgun where I live.

For that a decent 12 ga with 500 Gr rifled slug is a good choice. a little 30-06 or even a 8mm mag would be marginal at best. a .470 or .500 nitro express is about right I'd reckon.

Too fking close for a shotgun unless you got your backup shooter blasting away if there's a mishap.

My brother said they had a grizzley near the farm in AK once. He went outside with his .44mag and his dog. He couldn't see the bear because of the tall grass but the dog could smell it and it got between my brother's legs and started whimpering. He slowly walked backwards and went back into the house.

Don't think there would ever be a reason to shoot a grizzly unless close contact of a personla nature was unavoidable, but a 500grain rifled slug packs a pretty nice whalop out to about 25 yards or so. .44 mag might piss 'im off
from what a couple guides up there have told me the Bears are all unique in personality and demeanor. what might scare/drop one really would just piss another off, at least for the instant it mattered. Never shot a bear, would be a sad day, for me, if I ever had to.

I've never actually seen or heard a bear in person but I've seen my share of wolves and coyotes while hiking. We have cougars here as well but never seen one.

Naturally the UK and Europe have killed off all their wild animals and cut down all their wilderness so of course who needs a gun there?

With brown bear placement of the shot is more important than the firepower.
Brown bear have been killed with a wide variety calibers.
That said when in bear country I would carry either a remington 870 loaded with slugs and 00(I'd keep that in my airplane), a 6" barreled S&W 629 loaded with custom 300 gr. bullets (I'd carry that in a tactical chest holster along with two extra speed loaders while fishing or boating in remote areas).
My favorite all around bear gun is a winchester model 70 in 375 H&H modified with a muzzle brake and glass bedded.
I would practice with the pistol and rifle regularly be to comfortable using them. A gun isn't much good if you aren't ready to use it.

This seems as good as any thread.

    reading an article about the latest Sam Jose shooting and I read this paragraph at the bottom;

. comes after a deadly weekend of mass shootings across 10 states in America, which left at least 13 dead and 78 people injured
    .
San Jose shooting: Multiple people dead at California rail yard

Only 1.3 deaths per shooting. A minimum of four deaths or injured are required to be called a mass shooting, of which there have only been just over 200 this year.

No wonder no-one's worried . . . numbers are down so far

Another necro thread bump. Willy you do know that the dog would have tossed your ass in the clink for bumping this. You are validating skidmarks bumps.

Dangerous animals of the non human persuasion can easily be controlled with a bolt action Remington.

Not at all, I added something of value, skidders doesn’t. Anyway, I was trying to find the mega thread by searching ‘ Americans shooting themselves’ turns out I needed ‘Americans shooting’

is that the definition? Cheers. Bloody sad thing it’s been so normalised in the US: they need gun control. The constitution needs updating.the whole world can see that.
