UCLA Students Angry over 32% Tuition hike

This is not a "riot," IMO. Not even close.

We could call this a "protest." But with CA and the problems it's having, and a 32% tuition hike in CA universities,

There could be riots in CA and elsewhere.

These tuition hikes are expected to continue.

Nothing big about this, but it might be a future trend.

Ironically, this tuition hike is partly caused by giving aid to illegal aliens in numerous programs.

No offense, but you have it wrong, once again.

Many states have been cutting budgets for Ed across the country.

Federal Student Loans (FAFSA) are also part of the problem.

The fees and tuition hikes started rapidly increasing 10 years, and have actually gotten worse, recently.

It has been happening everywhere, since about 2 yrs ago.
However at the moment, UCLA happens to have the biggest one year hike, of about $10,000 increase.

I believe tuition at UCLA is only paid by non residents of California. Tuition amounts to about $20,000 per year. So a 32% increase would add $6,400. Residents pay about $8,500 in "fees".

University's throughout the US have been experiencing losses over the past couple of years due to the economic downturn. Dwindling contributions from alumni and private sources have forced universities to raise tuition on average about 6% per year.

The cost of uni education in the US is the highest in the world averaging between 2 and 4 times the cost of other developed nations.

College tuition fees have increased 3 times more than increases in median family income in the US. The high cost and ever widening gap in income makes it impossible for many US students to afford a uni education.

As MM points out, let there be no doubt, like health care, education in the US is big business. Maybe it's time to look at revamping the system?

Indeed. Not even close. This is what happens when a country allows itself to be put in a position where citizens are afraid of government/authority when it's the government which should be afraid of it's citizens.

How things have changed since I was of college age in the 60s. We had some real dandy demonstrations and riots back then. Today's kids don't have the guts to have a proper in your face, burn baby burn riot.

Ah yes...as I'm an allumnus of UC Santa Barbara circa early '70's saw my fair share of real down & out riots. One time was tear-gassed out of my apt there in Isla Vista. Seems some "radicals" drove a dumpster that was on fire right thru the doors of the Bank of America just off campus. Burned that bldg. right to the ground it did. All that was left was the safe.

Some people upthere do seem silly and thoughtless to me. Why don't they understand that ....
The more expensive education becomes, esp in today's economy, the fewer people there are that will be able to afford it. The less people can afford education, the less people will get one. The less people get an education, the more the economy and our whole society suffer.

I remember a movie scene where the uni student had ketchup and hot water. You want an education, you will find a way to get it. OMG, you might have to work part-time! Mind, with the leftie profs in most progs, who in their right mind would want to attend.

I don't know what's up with uni students these days.
Whatever happened to the days when they would riot at the drop of a hat.

I think revamping is a good idea.

    In way, I don't know.

Some posters have advocated ending SLs because Student Loans are considered to be the major reason for the continuous increases, in addition to the state budget problems in many states.
