Obama called Offshore Drilling a "Gimmick, but did he mean it??

Obama said offshore drilling was a gimmick and opposed lifting bans on the practice. Now he is going to give billions to Brazil for the same practice and of course the will sell it back to us for top dollar...or maybe just to China.

Why not pump that money into the US economy and why the flip on offshore drilling being a gimmick????

    Your thoughts???

Obama Pledges Two Billion Dollars to Brazil for OFFSHORE OIL DRILLING!!!! - Associated Content Pledges Two Billion

Dollars to Brazil for OFFSHORE OIL DRILLING!!!!

Love them there Progressives, don't we? How many trillions of ruined electrons have been sacrificed to hear all about how concerned Progressives are with the environment, fossil fuels, foreign oil, blah, blah, blah? To hear them tell it, the EARTH MUST move from fossil fuels. No, no, we

CANNOT drill our own oil? Offshore of the Continental US? No, no!

So, how does one take the news that Obama pledges $2 Billion American greenbacks to Brazil so they can drill their offshore oil? Is it just me or is this as absolutely contradictory as anything uttered by His Most Magnificence and the Minions?

Progressive domestic energy initiatives deny us drilling on our mainland, in Alaska, offshore and basically everywhere. Our only option, according to Progressives, are green and renewable things.

Anyone with a brain and NOT a partisan Lefty knows the reason Obama took over the car companies WAS NOT to rescue anything. It was totally and entirely to FORCE Detroit to build more fuel efficient, hybrid and electric vehicles. It was payback for the enviro nuts to throw their lot in with Obama, like the enviro lobby had any other choice!

So how does giving $2 Billion to Brazil to exploit fossil fuels dovetail with Progressive rhetoric about domestic energy exploration? The two do not compute - not one bit! Americans are forced to pay artificially inflated fuel prices because Progressives WILL NOT allow us to exploit our own VAST fossil fuel reserves offshore and on the mainland. But give the Brazilians $2 Billion? No worries, right Progressives? I love you guys. You make it too easy on me to metaphorically rape you. Thanks.

I guess I need ask, "Is Brazilian offshore oil less polluting?" I mean, that's all the Progressives have gone on and on about for some time, right? Long before they had the majorities in Congress they blocked every effort at the national and state levels to increase oil production. Same with coal. Obama stated - VERBATIM - he would bankrupt the coal industry. Hmmmm. They claim fossil fuels are too polluting.

    Gimmick story

I'm sorry but... ... No, seriously...

Ahhh the inimitable 'debating' style of the right: 'I'm correct and if you disagree with me, no matter how outlandish the claim, then you're a partisan lefty/Muslim sympathiser/hater of freedom/unAmerican/Terrorist lover/Commie... etc etc'

Anyways, where is it exactly that Obama called offshore drilling a "gimmick"? Can't seem to find the reference or quote.

    ^Ta.

The "gimmick" comment wasn't targeted specifically at off-shore drilling though; it was at McCain's energy plans as a whole during the campaign and his (Obama's) opinion that they weren't geared toward lessening oil dependence: "My entire energy plan will produce three times the oil savings that John McCain's ever could -- and what's more, it will actually decrease our dependence on oil while his will only grow our addiction further,"

Makes even less sense it light of the quotes from the OP as even McCain at that time: "...proposed that the federal government purchase more environmentally friendly vehicles". So it's somehow different if a GOP'er advocates it??

Makes the claims of "partisan Lefty " all the more laughable.

I think you are missing the point of the Ex-Im bank but don't let those pesky facts get in the way of a good talking point:

A spokesman for the U.S. Export Import Bank, Phil Cogan, explained to Politico that the bank does not rely on taxpayer money . Moreover, the bank lends money to foreign companies so that they can purchase American goods and services.
In this case, Cogan said, the proposed loan would likely finance engineering services, sales of ships to service oil platforms, or drilling equipment.
"This is the government doing what it's supposed to do: Create jobs and make sure that Americans get a fair shot at selling goods and services -- not the British or the French or anyone else -- and to help American workers compete on a level playing field," Cogan said, noting that most developed countries have similar credit-export agencies.

Seems to be some members do not read or care to quote the important facts of some items, maybe speed read and make a decision on what caught their eye and serve up bone and gristle and leave a lot of meat on the plate.
Some do it on purpose and some by accident or strong drink.
But it is nice to have the original to refer to before making your own decision.

I am not sure if that was aimed at me or the OP, I suspect the former, and I apologise for screwing up the link(s).

Not either really, just an observation from reading a lot of posts and searching the web, Funny how I lived the first 65 years of my life without a puter, searched books looking for answers and this makes it so easy.

I have given that some thought to TEX, but it makes no sense to me either, maybe he been blackballed from his home country.

Seeing as how on this thread, ostensibly about Obama and energy plans, yourself and Tex are making reference to me then I'd say the only obsession in play is that which the two of you have with me.

I guess you could say it's unhealthy as I'm a happily married man and the feeling aren't reciprocal.

No, just thought it was strange that you are always on the threads about USA and never say a word about NZ, Like maybe you are ashamed of being from there and like to strut the dog about USA.
Do you feel a certain kinship to Khun Obama ????

If there were ever a question about the intentions of BO before, it has become clear that he is the anti-Christ, bound and determined to undermine and destroy the very country he was elected to protect...

    Fvcking asshole...

Do campaign promises and oil mix?(editorial) | Article from Marine Log | HighBeam Research

During the campaign President-elect Obama promised that he'd work towards energy independence to "build and economy that is powered by clean and secure energy." Among the new Administration's strategies is to invest $150 billion over the next 10 years in alternative energy sources, as well as to implement a cap-and-trade program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80% by 2050.

Obama has left the door open to increased offshore drilling as part of an overall energy policy and there appears to be no plans to reinstate the offshore drilling moratorium.

Of course, campaign pledges often disappear on the cold hard light of post-election reality. ...

Off-shore drilling is putting a band-aid on a bullet wound.

As for Off-shore drilling, I don't care, and have no opinion.

But world consumption over-all is increasing (e.g. China) and if you believe in peak oil theory, the focus should be on alternatives now (whether the US drills or not).

Really has nothing to do with Peak Oil, more holes in more fields means more production, and sure it will cost more but the producers do not care as they will lose not a dime.

The days of cheap oil are over. It has a lot to do with peak oil.

As I stated, drill off-shore or not, alternative need to be research with R & D and it's happening now.

You are correct, but you will never live to see it and Obama ain't really interested, he has some plan to really break the USA and he is doing it very fast, so I will live to see what he is doing and why.
something started with Clinton and all mfg. went offshore and now the economy and the loaning of money to people that were not capable of ever repaying and the takeover by the US Govt and giving away trillions of dollars by Obama and the FED.
    something is up my boy.

Yes, Clinton accelerated the move to go overseas - but remember, this was the govenment's plan since WWII ended.

It's been the plan all along, and it's definitely supported by the anti-union GOP.

The US has been sending money overseas (via Trade/current account deficits) for years and dumping T-bills.

    It's the same ol' story.

    Same as it ever was.

As I posted on the Obama thread about this story yesterday, the real libbie clunker is that this $2 Bil in Obama aid to Petrobras in Brazil is basically a gift to bambam's good buddy, George Soros, who bought a big chunk of that company just before bambam announced his pledge:

London: Billionaire investor George Soros bought an $811 million stake in Petroleo Brasileiro (Petrobras) in the second quarter, making the Brazilian state-controlled oil company his investment fund’s largest holding.
As of June 30, the stake in Petrobras, as the Rio de Janeiro-based oil producer is known, made up 22 per cent of the $3.68 billion of stocks and American depositary receipts held by Soros Fund Management, according to a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

Could do. CA State legislature will have to be more flexible though. Arnold who was adamantly opposed to off shore drilling a year ago seems to have done a U-turn (aka flip flop) and now supports off shore drilling.

Off shore drilling not a Federal issue so not Obama's call. State law prevails. California and Florida have laws which prohibit it. Brazil does not, so offshore drilling companies not able to drill off the US will benefit from the loan to Brazil.

    Ask Boonme.

"The California state assembly killed a chance on Friday for the state's first new offshore oil drilling lease since 1969, after the idea narrowly passed the senate earlier in the day."

California kills offshore oil lease project | Green Business | Reuters

If and when there is a federally mandated energy bill, I doubt off shore drilling will be excluded as an integrated part of the plan.
