    Marines executed Iraqis, photos indicate

By Tony Perry and Julian E. Barnes
    Los Angeles Times

WASHINGTON — Photographs taken by a Marine intelligence team have convinced investigators that a Marine unit killed up to 24 unarmed Iraqis, some of them "execution style," officials close to the investigation said Friday.
The killings occurred in the insurgent stronghold of Haditha in November after a Marine was killed in a roadside bombing nearby.
The pictures are said to show that some of the victims, who included several women and six children, were shot in the head and some in the back, according to congressional and defense officials.
One government official said the pictures show that infantry Marines from Camp Pendleton "suffered a total breakdown in morality and leadership, with tragic results."

Iraqi athletes killed for wearing shorts
By KIM GAMEL, Associated Press Writer Sat May 27, 10:01 PM ET

BAGHDAD, Iraq - An Iraqi tennis coach and two of his players were shot to death this week in Baghdad because they were wearing shorts, authorities said Saturday, reporting the latest in a series of recent attacks attributed to Islamic extremists.

....gunmen stopped a car carrying the Sunni Arab coach and two Shiite players, asked them to step out and then shot them, said Manham Kubba secretary-general of the Iraqi Tennis Union.

Extremists had distributed leaflets warning people in the mostly Sunni neighborhoods of Saidiyah and Ghazaliyah warning people not to wear shorts, police said.
"Wearing shorts by youth are prohibited because it violates the principals of Islamic religion when showing forbidden parts of the body. Also women should wear the veil," the leaflets said.

Something like that would have never happened under Saddam.

^ I think you missed my point. This war will soon turn into a religious civil war. Not sure if that's an improvment over Saddam. At the end Americans will have killed more Iraqis than Saddam. And shooting kids in the back is as bad as the schredding machine (if that's even true, more dubious intelligence considering the source)

Well, I used to be more in favor of the war than I am now.
Also looked at it as a real good chance to earn some significant money re-building the country after Saddam but the friggin' place is just too damn dangerous.

Of course the only way America can win any war is if they get more women into the military, that would sort out all those squeamish nancy boy soldiers.

Question: Do Iraqi muslims due to their faith and/or tribalism need a brutal dictator to cull them regularly to keep them from killing each other on their own? I mean that's what it sounds like over there.

Shooting kids in the back is a terrible thing but it is not US policy. Saddam's murders were government policy. In the case of the marines, individuals cracked under pressure. It happens. The US military tries its best to moniter people, reinforce their training and rotate troops stateside and to R&R sites.

As far as why we aren't involved in N.Korea and Burma, they lie in the sphere of Chinese influence. We have our Monroe Doctrine and we wish it respected so we aren't heavily involved. My guess is the USA works indirectly through the UN, World Bank, etc.. I don't know if we are still shipping tons of humanitarian aid to the people of N.Korea. We don't exert more pressure directly on China because they are making progress and they are open to progress.

The facts of this case remain to be released. But if this group is found guilty then I hope they get the death penalty. If not then at least life in Fort Leavenworth.
