NY City proposes tighter gun control laws.

I wonder, if those who are happy about civil liberty infriingement will be happy about this.

New York City proposes new gun control laws

    AFP | June 6 2006

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's crusade against gun crime took a step forward Monday with the introduction of new legislation aimed at tightening control over firearms sales.

"The fight against illegal guns isn't waged only on the streets," Bloomberg told reporters.

"Creating local laws that make enforcement easier and prevention more effective is critical in the fight to keep illegal guns off our streets and out of the hands of criminals," he added.

The legislative package, which will be presented to the City Council later this month, would require individuals convicted of criminal possession of a weapon to register their current addresses and personally report to the police every six months.

It also includes a ban on the use and sale of gun coloration kits, which are used to paint guns in "toy-like" colors, and the introduction of a one handgun every-three-month purchase limit.

"Last year, over 300 New Yorkers, many of them children, were killed with illegal guns," said City Council Speaker Christine Quinn. "We won't stand by any longer."

Bloomberg has made gun control a key issue of his second term in office.

In April, he convened a summit in New York of mayors from more than a dozen US cities to discuss various strategies, including the filing of joint lawsuits against rogue gun dealers.
An eminently sensible move which doesn't go nearly far enough.

Some of you have been reading what I'e been writing for more than a couple of years now. But it's like people hear what they want to hear and that's it ... how can I be a neocon when:

    1. I practice no religion.
    2. I favor gun control.
    3. I'm pro-choice.
    4. I like dopers.
    5. I like big government.
    6. I favor same sex unions.
    7. I liked Bill Clinton.

I'm framed as a neocon based on these things:

    1. Unwavering support for George Bush.
    2. Think the Kyoto Treaty is bullshit.
    3. Don't believe in legal euthanasia.
    4. Believe majority of uni professors are hard left wing.
    5. Believe the US economy is sounder than some portray.
    6. Think Michael Moore is a fat moron.
    7. Think Noam Chomsky is a blowhard.

^ man, you are like 90% pinko communist and 10% NeoCon

    Top:
    1 to 7 - agree

    Bottom:
    1 to 2 - disagree
    3 to 4 - agree
    5 to 7 - disagree

Gun control is good. It will eventually happen everywhere in the US. It's ridiculous to have people in cities with guns.

Gun control is a separate issue.

It's not very definable on someone's partisanship, in general, or lack of.

    It's an issue.

    One of many.

I have 7 pistols and an assault rifle with a 30-rund banana clip.

I've gotten all of the arms I want and they are locked up safe and sound.

I also have a concealed weapons permit to carry a gun on my person in the state of Washington.

Other areas of the country and cities can do what they want at the local level.

But don't tell me what to do to protect myself and/or my home.

With you on that one, except that it's marriages I don't like, irregardless of the gender of your partner. This isn't because I'm an atheist, but for a much more practical reason: as soon as I got married to the former Mrs BB, she decided that blow jobs were off the menu. So if we have to give up either the institution of marriage or blow jobs, there's no contest, really.

Oh yes, and just to keep it all nicely on topic for the Powers That Be, *tremble* I favour a total ban on guns kept at home or on someone's person. If you've got a shooting fetish, well I guess I'd let you buy a gun and keep it locked up securely at a gun club or something, but otherwise, no guns.
The sleep of reason brings forth monsters.

That's kinda what the law on guns is supposed to be here in Japan.

I'm saying it shouldn't be a civil right.
It might have been necessary when your constitution was writen way back when. i doubt whether you need it now.

I agree, owning and carrying offensive weapons shouldn't be a "civil right", but reserved for trained personnel who need them during their work.

See how the discussion could easily evolve into talking about the Constitution ? The right to bear arms is a civil right guaranteed. I see the Constitution as a flexible document and have no problem amending it to only allow guns in the hands of law enforcement and gun clubs. My problem with amending the constitution is liberals are only willing to do it when it suits their agenda.
