Obama makes history as Democratic nominee

Love him or hate him. Agree with his policies or not. Vote for him or not. By any measure this is a significant milestone in the history of the US. Even the Republicans hailed the achievement.

For most be they conservatives or liberals Obama's nomination as the Democratic Presidential candidate can only be seen as a giant step in the normalization of race relations in the US.

For some it will have the same historical significance as Pearl Harbor or 9/11.

Win or lose the Presidency, history has been made.

"On a historic night for America, Barack Obama secured the Democratic Party's nomination for president and emerged for the first time on stage in Denver with running mate Sen. Joe Biden.

Obama on Wednesday officially became the first African American to lead a major party ticket.

Delegates cried and cheered as former rival Sen. Hillary Clinton motioned to cut the roll call vote short, saying "Let's declare together with one voice right here, right now, that Barack Obama is our candidate and he will be our president."

The dramatic move was carefully choreographed to put down any fears of a divided party following the protracted primary battle.

The Democrats jumped to their feet as they made history with Obama as their leader. Outside the hall, Republican leaders also hailed the achievement."

What is sad is the fact that he's half white and being half black seems to be his major accomplishment.
His veneer is getting so thin it's positively diabolical.
The leftist dem fokwits will rue the day they sold Hillary out.
Hillary will still have a chance in 2012.

The media and many conservatives have continued to paint him as a black man who's only asset is his blackness. He himself has tried in vain to counter the fact by pointing out his mother is white. Can't have it both ways Earl.

His major accomplishment is he has emerged victorious in a highly contested race against the Clinton's, the most influential and effective politicos in the Democratic party. This didn't happen by accident or because he is a black.

He is not half black, he is 1/6 black at the most,And no part of that is African American,[ which there is no race known as African American]. 1/2 white and the remainder is Arab.

Congratulations to the US on a momentous step forward in race relations.
Shame on those Americans that can not accept it for the historic achievement that it is.

To some degree, this may be a historic event which could influence selection of leaders in other countries.

No idea about the truth of the below, still kind of interesting.

Thomas Jefferson, the third U.S. President, was the "son of a half-breed Indian squaw and a Virginia mulatto father."

Andrew Jackson, the seventh U.S. President, was "the son of an Irish woman who married a black man." (His older brother was reportedly sold into slavery.)

Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth U.S. President, had dark skin, course hair, and a heritage that included Melungeon or African ancestors. Hussein writes that "His heritage fueled so much controversy that Lincoln was nicknamed "Abraham Africanus the First" by his opponents."

Warren Harding, the twenty-ninth U.S. President, never denied his African heritage, and reportedly had black ancestors on both sides of his family; it is also said that Harding attended a school that was founded to educate fugitive slaves.

Calvin Coolidge, the thirtieth U.S. President, was found to have African and possibly Native American heritage as well.

Indeed an historic event, and good on Obama.

I must say I have heaps more respect for Obama than I have had for any of the prior “black” candidates that have taken a shot on the presidential level with the possible exceptions of Carol Moseley, and Alan Keyes. And Keyes has started to become a bit of a wack job as of late.

Wouldn't be so bad. Has the experience for sure. Little light on the "leadership" attribute part though as she has seemed to prefer being a good follower.

Obama is a an empty suit - does little and says nothing. I'm sure he'll go back to the Senate and live an obscure, but privileged existence.

You may well be correct but he will never historically be obscure.

Good for BO. It's quite an accomplishment.
Should he become president, I hope he remembers to thank George W Bush, without whom, he wouldn't be where he is today.
