The other prospective crew provider, Boeing has still not made it 3 years after SpaceX. It is also known by now that they won't fly regular crew in 2024, just the crew demo mission.

Tesla was floundering. Elon did not only bring in some money, he altered the course and tech action. Without him, even with money, Tesla would have gone down. Tesla shareholders want him at the helm even now for a reason.
