UN Council adopts resolution calling for arms sales to Israel to be banned

A majority of members of the UN Human Rights Council have voted in favour of a resolution calling for an end to arms sales to Israel. It writes the BBC.

The resolution also demands that Israel be held accountable for possible war crimes in the war in the Gaza Strip.

28 of the council's 47 members voted in favour, six against and 13 abstained.

Arms sales to Israel have come up for discussion in Britain, where a number of judges - four Supreme Court justices - have signed a petition calling on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to stop contributing to Israel's arsenal.

Two Israeli military officers have been fired for their roles in the drone strike in Gaza that killed seven employees of the World Central Kitchen (WCK).

It writes the news agency AP.

The military said the fired officers had "misused critical information and violated Army action rules."

Three others have been reprimanded.

An IDF spokesperson, Daniel Hagari, told reporters the incident was "a tragedy."

"This is a serious incident for which we are responsible, it should not have happened and we will ensure it does not happen again.

The deadly drone strike took place on Monday in the town of Deir al Balah in the central Gaza Strip. The international aid workers had just delivered 100 tonnes of humanitarian food aid to the civilian population of Gaza.

According to CNN and Reuters, the IDF said on Friday that "those who approved the attack were convinced they were targeting Hamas," but also said the military's "standard procedure" had been violated.

In a written statement from the IDF, it said:

"The attack on the emergency vehicles is a serious mistake which led to a serious mistake due to incorrect identification, errors in decision-making and an attack in violation of standard operating procedures.

Pressure is mounting on Israel


Several countries have asked for an independent, international investigation into the attack, but so far Israel has only allowed its own internal investigation. World Central Kitchen (WCK) has called the airstrike a "deliberate and systematic attack."

After the deadly attack, the pressure on Israel has only increased further from the world community.

Among other things, from the countries whose nationals lost their lives. The killed WCK workers are from Australia, Poland and the UK, respectively. One also had dual citizenship of the United States and Canada, and one had a Palestinian background.

Not least Israel's most important ally, the United States, has sharpened its rhetoric. In a phone call with Israel's prime minister, Joe Biden said last night that the US expects to see changes in Israel's approach to Gaza – otherwise the US "would have to make changes".

White House spokesman John Kirby said Israel was about ensuring the safety of aid workers in Gaza and getting more aid to the squeezed Palestinians.

IDF ends active ground invasion, completely withdraws from southern Gaza

The IDF on Sunday announced that it had concluded the active invasion stage of the war for now while leaving open the possibility of a future new invasion of Rafah in deep southern Gaza.


In terms of IDF soldiers, this means that the IDF has withdrawn all of Division 98 from Khan Yunis in southern Gaza while maintaining one plus brigades - the Nahal brigade and portions of Brigade 401 – in northern and central Gaza.


Although a top IDF official said that this change had nothing to do with US pressure, the timing was unmistakable in coming right after the IDF’s disastrous mistaken killing of seven humanitarian aid workers last week.

The decision also came less than two days after Israel opened the Erez Crossing and Ashdod port to transfer humanitarian aid, decisions made under threat by the US of potentially losing weapons support after Jerusalem had refused these requests from Washington for months.

Support from all over the world poured into Israel after Hamas's terrorist attacks on October 7, in which 1,200 people were killed and 253 people were taken hostage.

But since then, several have shown their dissatisfaction with Israel's actions.

This Sunday marked the half-year anniversary of the bloody war Israel has been waging against Hamas in the Gaza Strip ever since.

A war that has, among other things, led to demonstrations around the world and a UN resolution for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

And with that, Israel is losing the PR war internationally, according to Hans Henrik Fafner, international editor of the online media POV and longtime Middle East correspondent, who lives in Israel.

Over the weekend, thousands of people took to the streets to show their displeasure with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Among other things, they demanded that Netanyahu resign.

All the while criticism from the international community has intensified. Even one of America's biggest Israel supporters, former president and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, came out over the weekend with what he called a "very simple message" to Israel:

- Get it over with. Because we need to get back to normal and to peace. They're losing the PR war, and they're losing it big," Trump said on The Hugh Hewitt Show.

And in Israel, of course, there is concern that the outside world will begin to look askance at both the country and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, says Henrik Fafner.

"It's not nice to be put in the corner of shame by the whole world. And this is exactly what many Israelis see happening to their country.

Not the first time criticism has come down


Many Israelis are also refraining from going on holiday this year because they are worried about coming forward and being Israeli outside the country's borders, says Hans Henrik Fafner.

- It is a very small and perhaps banal thing in the grand scheme of things. But it shows very clearly how the Israelis are worried about what this is actually leading to.

The concern is rooted in a statistic that draws dark threads to the past. Since the beginning of the war, there have been reports of a sharp increase in anti-Semitic incidents across Europe.

Hans Henrik Fafner says that he remembers how the second intifada led to considerable criticism of Israel from the outside world.

The 'Second Intifada' was a period of violence and conflict in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories that began in 2000. Israel then tightened its grip on the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

Therefore, some Israelis believe that the storm of criticism will pass because they have tried it before, says Hans Henrik Fafner.

- But then there are many who say that "this is significantly worse than anything we have seen before, and the criticism is significantly harsher this time".

Most recently, the United States, Israel's closest ally, distanced itself from Benjamin Netanyahu.

"This is a very worrying sign, which of course may have some consequences in the long term, and we are fully aware of this," says Hans Henrik Fafner.

Netanyahu: Israel is one step away from victory


No international pressure can stop Israel. At least that's what Benjamin Netanyahu says, writes the BBC.

"If we stop the war now, before we have achieved all its goals, it means that Israel has lost the war, and we will not allow that," Netanyahu told a meeting of his cabinet.

According to Netanyahu, Israel needs to put an end to Hamas, free the still captured hostages and make sure Gaza no longer poses a threat.

Hamas is on the lists of terrorist organisations of the European Union and the United States.

Benjamin Netanyahu marked the half-year anniversary of the war in Gaza with the message that Israel was "one step away from victory". At the same time, he insisted that there would be no ceasefire without the release of Israeli hostages.

"The war has achieved significant results: we have wiped out 19 of Hamas's 24 battalions, including senior commanders," he said.
