Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin is preparing to welcome Chinese tourists on September 25 at Suvarnabhumi Airport to celebrate the "visa exemption" policy for Chinese and Kazakh visitors.

The new measure allows them to travel to Thailand without a visa for up to 30 days throughout a 5-month temporary programme that runs from September 25 to February 29, 2024.

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports has released statistics showing that the number of foreign tourists visiting Thailand from January 1 to September 17 exceeded 19 million, marking a 271% increase compared to the same period last year.

The top five foreign tourist markets visiting Thailand during this period are:

    Malaysia: 3,076,274 tourists

    China: 2,341,080 tourists

    South Korea: 1,125,639 tourists

    India: 1,097,395 tourists

    Russia: 961,348 tourists

These tourists have contributed significantly to the Thai tourism industry, with total revenue exceeding 795.11 billion baht, resulting in combined tourism revenue of 1.3 trillion baht when considering both Thai and foreign tourists.

Looking ahead, the Tourism and Sports Ministry expects a gradual recovery in foreign tourism as markets like Malaysia and Japan have consecutive holidays. They anticipate that about 490,000 foreign tourists, mainly from nearby markets such as East Asia, Southeast Asia, and ASEAN, will visit Thailand during this period,

However, the sector still faces challenges, such as limited flight availability and higher ticket prices compared to competing destinations.

Earlier, the Tourism Authority of Thailand Governor (TAT) Thapanee Kiatphaibool said that based on the assessment of foreign tourist trends this year, it is expected that there will be 28-29 million tourists, which is higher than the target set by the TAT of at least 25 million.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports has adjusted its target for the number of foreign tourists for next year to 40 million, up from the previous goal of at least 35 million. It is believed that this target is achievable because both PM Srettha and all government ministries are ready to support the tourism sector. TAT is prepared to work towards achieving the goal of 40 million tourists.

Public Health minister Dr Cholnan Srikaew has defended his decision to appoint his wife, Dr Nuansakul Bamrungpong, as one of his advisors, insisting she has long experience in public health communications.

“The appointment will not create a conflict of interest and she will not receive a salary,” Cholnan said on Wednesday.

He admitted that the decision poses a risk for him, but he trusts and has confidence in his wife. “She has been by my side for long time, including helping me in election campaigns,” he said.

Dr Nuansakul is assigned to help in the dissemination of public health and medical information, as well as solving any communication problems among the personnel and agencies of the ministry, Cholnan said.

She can help by organising training for nurses to increase their skills in communicating with patients, because she has expertise and experience in the field as a former director of the ministry’s Bureau of Information.

She will also handle the welfare for all personnel of the ministry, because she is a former director of community hospitals, Cholnan insisted.

Few people know about Dr. Nuansakul’s roles, although Cholnan was a Pheu Thai party leader and was at the forefront in forming a coalition with Move Forward at the core after the May general election.

During the election campaign, Cholnan said he would resign from the Pheu Thai leadership if his party formed the government with the Palang Pracharath and United Nation parties, which are its arch rivals.

After Move Forward failed, Pheu Thai, at the core, succeeded in forming the government after partnering with those two parties. Many called for Cholnan to keep his promise and he said he would, but only after the government is formed.

It was during that time that Nuansakul came out to defend her husband by writing on Cholnan’s Facebook page “he will certainly resign, don’t worry.”

After the government, led by Srettha Thavisin, took office, Cholnan resigned and was later appointed public health minister.

Cambodia is looking forward to Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s visit to Phnom Penh later this month, aimed at further boosting ties between the two countries, according to Cambodia’s government spokesman.

“We are neighbours and we both have new prime ministers, so it is good to meet each other to continue cooperation and boost ties further,” spokesman Pen Bona was quoted by the Khmer Times as saying.

He said, however, that there is no set agenda yet or indication of agreements that will be signed during Srettha’s visit to Phnom Penh.

Srettha will meet Prime Minister Hun Manet, who was appointed to Cambodia’s top executive post on the same day as the Thai leader last month.

The visit of Srettha was discussed during a recent meeting between Sarun Charoensuwan, the Thai permanent secretary for foreign affairs, and Soeung Rathchavy, Cambodia’s secretary of state at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Bangkok.

Rathchavy led a delegation on a working visit to Bangkok on September 14th and 15th.
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

Prime Minister and Finance Minister Srettha Thavisin said on Wednesday that United States President Joe Biden had congratulated him on becoming the Prime Minister and promised that the US would remain a good trading partner of Thailand.

The trade partnership between the US and Thailand dates back more than 160 years.

Srettha said he met Biden for a short session during the Gala Dinner for those attending the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 78) in New York City on Tuesday.

Srettha expects that Thai and US representatives will discuss bilateral cooperation during the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders' Meeting in San Francisco in November.

On Wednesday, Srettha delivered remarks at the Gala Dinner at St. Regis Hotel, New York City hosted in his honour by the US-Asean Business Council (USABC) and the US Chamber of Commerce (USCC).

Government spokesperson Chai Wacharonke said the PM’s speech highlighted key policies in three aspects that will create vast opportunities for the US companies in Thailand. They are:

    1) Shifting the economy into high gear through the implementation of progressive stimulus packages, including the 10,000 baht (285 dollars) digital wallet scheme to inject cash flow of around 16 billion dollars into the Thai economy through a high-security blockchain system.
    2) Revving up green economy and energy transition while doubling efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and net-zero emissions by 2065.
    3) Rebuilding an “Innovative, Inclusive and Integrated Thailand” for the future generations. This will be done by ensuring that the nation can innovate with knowledge and creativity, that businesses and people from all walks of life can enjoy inclusivity from an open society and good governance, and that the government and society are fully integrated to ensure Thailand is on par with global competitiveness in the long-run.

“Now is the time for you to do more business in Thailand,” Srettha stated, reaffirming the government’s commitment to the betterment of Thai society, including the business community in Thailand.

Thailand’s Foreign Minister Parnpree Bahiddha-Nukara has called for greater investment in Universal Health Coverage (UHC), to ensure the resilience of health systems, social protections, social justice and health equity.

Describing COVID-19 as one of the most serious multidimensional crises of our time, Parnpree said the international community should expedite reforms of the global health architecture, to improve its equity, inclusivity and coherence, through capacity building and the enhancement of public-private partnership for a digital transformation of health systems.

Parnpree, also a deputy prime minister, was speaking during the High-level Meeting on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response (PPPR) on the sidelines of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

“It is vital to intensify development cooperation for PPPR, which is essential to global health security, through innovative means, including through sharing of health-related intellectual property rights through the COVID-19 Technology Access Pool (C-TAP),” he said.

According to the Thai Government House online website, the meeting was a platform for Thailand to reaffirm her commitment to working with the international community to improve the world’s PPPR.

It also approved a political declaration on PPPR, showing that the international community is united and ready to work as one in a spirit of partnership and cooperation towards the common good.

Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said he has advised FIFA president Gianni Infantino, during their recent meeting, that Thailand and other ASEAN members will be ready to co-host the 2034 FIFA World Cup, if chosen.

“I raised the issue with the FIFA president and, from now on, ASEAN has to work together to develop our level of football, as well as our readiness to host the event,” Srettha said in his tweet.

The meeting between Srettha and Infantino, president of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) took place yesterday (Wednesday) on the sidelines of the UNGA meeting in New York.

The ten ASEAN member states have recently established a joint task force, aimed at securing the hosting rights for the 2034 football World Cup.

During the meeting, Infantino invited Srettha to attend the 74th FIFA Congress, to be hosted in Bangkok in May next year. About 2,000 representatives from 211 countries are scheduled to attend.

Srettha said after the meeting that the FIFA Congress in Thailand is a huge gathering. “Considering the number of participants, it is bigger than this UN conference. The attendance of the international participants will surely stimulate Thailand’s economy,” he said.

Football is hugely popular in most parts of the world and is of massive commercial value.

Srettha said FIFA has prioritised grass root support, by allocating more financial support for development, from US$250,000 to US$2 million per year, despite the FIFA’s income not increasing that much.

He thanked FIFA for adding four extra places for Asian teams at the 2026 World Cup, which will take place in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Srettha claimed that this has raised ASEAN hopes, not only for our teams to play in the World Cup, but it will also inspire more of our children to play football, instead of falling into drug abuse or other bad things. I cannot not deny that football has gained much attention from me, said Srettha, who loves to play football and is a big fan of Liverpool in the England Premier League.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has hinted that convicted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra could be assigned an advisory role in his government, once he completes his time in prison.

“I believe he has value to add to the government and to the people of Thailand,” Srettha said during an interview with Bloomberg Television in New York.

He also pointed to Thaksin’s popularity. “He was, and probably still is the most popular prime minister in the history of Thai politics,” Srettha claimed.

“Obviously, that comes with good reasons and, when he becomes free, it would be unwise of me not to seek his opinion and that of other (former) prime ministers as well,” he added.

The prime minister did not, however, specify what role Thaksin would actually play in the new government. “Let’s play it by ear,” Srettha said.

Thaksin is a founder of Thai Rak Thai, Palang Prachachon and then Pheu Thai parties. Srettha was a Pheu Thai prime ministerial candidate when he was selected as prime minister. Thaksin’s youngest daughter Paetongtarn Shinawatra was also one of the party’s three prime ministerial candidates and is tipped to become its leader.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin continued his series of meetings with leading US firms this week, holding discussions with Tesla chief Elon Musk via remote conferencing on Wednesday and with executives of Microsoft on Thursday.

In his conversation with Musk, the PM expressed his commitment to collaborating and boosting investment opportunities in Thailand, particularly in the electric vehicle (EV) sector and space exploration, and praised the shared vision for the betterment of humanity and a cleaner world towards a brighter future.

Srettha emphasised that he expected the encounter to be successful, not only for Thailand but also for the global community, given the high market value of collaboration in the fields of EV and space exploration.

The Tesla team applauded Thailand's human resource potential, which aligns well with Tesla's investment plans and took note that the Thai government and related agencies are ready to provide support and a legal framework for investment benefits in these areas.

In his meeting in the United States with Microsoft executives, the PM began by expressing gratitude to Microsoft for their long-standing cooperation and investment in Thailand, highlighting the potential for Thailand to become a regional hub and a data centre for the region.

Microsoft is keen to support both the private and public sectors in utilising cloud technology. Such cloud investments in Thailand are expected to enhance the capabilities of the Thai workforce, especially in the information technology (IT) and engineering fields, contributing to Thailand's competitiveness.

Srettha also extended an invitation to Microsoft to invest in data centres in Thailand, with an estimated investment of around US$15 billion or approximately 500 billion baht. The data centres would require a power capacity of 500 megawatts. Thailand is among the countries being considered for this investment, alongside Malaysia and Singapore. If Microsoft chooses to invest in Thailand, it is estimated to involve an initial investment of approximately 100 billion baht.

High-level sources in Thailand's technology industry say that Microsoft executives in Thailand have not yet confirmed or denied this investment, as their current focus remains on AI. Microsoft has plans to invest in three countries, Thailand, India, and Malaysia, and the decision on the destination of their investment is yet to be finalised.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin told Thai people living in the United States that the country’s political conflict is a matter of serious concern which is difficult and may take time to resolve.

He added, however, that his government has been working hard to reinvigorate the sluggish Thai economy, while taking care to improve people’s livelihoods through the implementation of the “digital wallet” scheme, 3-year debt moratoria for farmers and energy price cuts.

On tourism, the prime minister cited the Cabinet’s recent visa exemption for tourists from China and Kazakhstan as a short-term measure to help the economy, adding that the government will continue to boost domestic tourism with additional measures.

Thailand’s GDP has been increasing slowly, compared to neighbouring countries, and exports have declined for several consecutive months, he said.

Speaking in New York, Thailand’s Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said that his government will amend the law on cannabis, to restrict its use to medical purposes and to control retail cannabis outlets, within six months.

During his interview with Bloomberg, the prime minister said that, since cannabis was decriminalised in Thailand last year, by removing it from the Category 5 drugs list, it has become the first country in Asia where cannabis is available for medical as well as recreational purposes, resulting in the rapid growth of retail outlets offering cannabis and its extracts over the counter.

He claimed that there is broad agreement among the 11 coalition parties that the use of cannabis and its extracts must be restricted to medical use.

Decriminalisation of cannabis and its extracts is the flagship policy of the Bhumjaithai party, the second largest party in the coalition during the election campaign.

Meanwhile, Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew said today (Thursday) that the Bhumjaithai party can resubmit its Cannabis Bill to parliament for consideration.

He maintains that, even though cannabis has been removed from the Category 5 drugs list, it is still regarded as a narcotic.

He stressed the need for the Cannabis Act to be amended to restrict its use to medical purposes, adding that the cultivation of cannabis plants should also be curtailed, especially the right of each household to grow up to 15 plants in their backyard.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin on Wednesday evening met with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol after attending the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York City.
Government spokesperson Chai Wacharonke said that at the first meeting of the two leaders, both sides celebrated the long-standing bilateral relationship, especially in the cultural and public interest aspects.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established 65 years ago.

Chai said Srettha and Yoon expressed interest in strengthening bilateral cooperation across all strategic aspects, including the negotiation of an Economic Partnership Agreement.

The two countries also agreed to promote cooperation in key industries, such as aerospace, nuclear energy, electric vehicle, branchless banking, soft power, and startup investments, he added.

Srettha said the Thai government is ready to facilitate South Korean entrepreneurs who are interested in Thailand, while urging more South Korean tourists to travel to Thailand.

Srettha also invited the South Korean president and his wife to visit Thailand.

Some 1.12 million South Korean tourists have visited Thailand this year, ranking third among top foreign arrivals to the kingdom. Malaysians were the most at around 3.07 million people, followed by the Chinese at 2.34 million.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin discussed with his Malaysian counterpart, Anwar Ibrahim, various issues of mutual interest, including the peace process in Thailand’s restive Muslim-majority deep South.
Their first meeting since Srettha assumed office last month took place in New York on Thursday (Sept 21) evening, on the sidelines of the 78th United Nations General Assembly.

The 30-minute meeting was also attended by government ministers and delegations from both countries, Malaysian media reported on Friday.

PM Srettha welcomed Malaysia’s support for the peace process and the development of Thailand’s southern border region, government spokesperson Chai Wacharonke said after the meeting.

“The [Thai] government will follow up and work closely on this collaboration. The two countries will push for cooperation in dealing with security-related challenges, including narcotics,” the spokesman said.

He also said that Srettha had accepted Anwar’s invitation to visit Malaysia “at the earliest opportunity”. The Thai side also suggested a dialogue of business leaders from both countries to promote mutual trade and investment, according to the spokesman.

Anwar said in a social media post that the meeting was a good opportunity for both countries to boost bilateral ties.

“This meeting provides opportunities to strengthen existing cooperation while exploring various new forms of collaboration to enhance Malaysia-Thailand relations,” Malaysia’s The Star newspaper quoted Anwar as saying.

“Besides discussing ways to strengthen our bilateral ties, we also spoke on various issues, including borders, the peace process in southern Thailand, and other regional issues of mutual interest,” said Anwar, as reported by the Malay Mail.

On August 23, Anwar congratulated Srettha on being elected the new prime minister of Thailand.

In their phone conversation, Anwar had also invited Srettha to visit Malaysia in the near future to strengthen ties between the two countries.

“Hopefully the relationship between Malaysia and Thailand will continue to be strengthened for mutual benefit,” the Malaysian leader posted on his Facebook page.

Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai has welcomed Srettha Thavisin’s idea of having convicted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra act as an advisor, once he completes serving time in prison.

“Thaksin could be assigned as the prime minister’s chief advisor. My understanding is that Srettha wishes to learn from Thaksin’s experience and capabilities,” said Phumtham, who is also commerce minister, adding that he will look into the legality of such a move.

“I believe he (Thaksin) has value to add to the government and to the people of Thailand,” Srettha said during a recent interview with Bloomberg Television in New York.

He also mentioned Thaksin’s popularity. “He was, and probably still is the most popular prime minister in the history of Thai politics,” Srettha claimed.

“To give advice and opinions is something that Thaksin could do, as he ran the country as premier for six years,” said Phumtham said, adding Thaksin, meanwhile, would like to be with his family and anything he could do for the country, he would certainly do.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin on Thursday hinted that former leader Thaksin Shinawatra would get an advisory role in his government once he is out of prison.
Srettha said Thaksin would prove to be valuable to his administration and the country.

“I believe he has value to add to the government and to the people of Thailand,” the PM said during an interview with Bloomberg Television in New York.

He also pointed to the ex-leader’s huge popularity. “He was, and probably still is, the most popular prime minister in the history of Thai politics,” Srettha said.

“Obviously, that comes with good reasons and if he becomes free it would be unwise of me not to seek his opinion and that of other prime ministers as well,” he added.

However, the prime minister did not clearly state as to what role Thaksin would play in the new government. “Let’s play by ear,” Srettha said during his interview in New York.

Srettha, a property tycoon-turned-politician, acknowledged his political inexperience during his Bloomberg interview. But he dismissed any concerns about the stability of his coalition government. “I believe it is a very, very stable government,” he said.

Thaksin is regarded as the patriarch of the Pheu Thai Party. The founder of Pheu Thai’s predecessor Thai Rak Thai over two decades ago, the 74-year-old has retained huge influence over the current ruling party.

He served as prime minister from February 2001 to September 2006 before his government was ousted in a military coup.

Thaksin is serving jail sentences in multiple corruption cases following his return to Thailand after 15 years of self-imposed exile overseas. He reportedly was sent to Police General Hospital for treatment just hours after his return on a private jet on August 22.

Thaksin’s flight touched down in Bangkok just hours before Srettha was voted in Parliament as Thailand’s 30th prime minister. Srettha’s win was credited to huge support from the Senate, in an arrangement widely seen as part of a deal between Thaksin and the royalist pro-military establishment.

The ex-premier recently saw his eight-year jail term reduced to one year due to a royal pardon. His family is looking at the possibility of securing his early release on parole, possibly in February.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin urged partner countries to forge closer ties “through commerce, investment and trade agreements” in his speech at the UN General Assembly on Friday.

“My government will also be reaching out to friends and partners all over the world to forge closer ties of partnership through commerce, investment and trade agreements,” he said.

Srettha, who also doubles as finance minister, is in New York to attend the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). “Today, we meet at a time of multiple global challenges, including fragile global peace, declining human development and the sustainability of our planet,” he said.

“These challenges require multilateralism and the spirit of international cooperation, and Thailand intends to work closely with all nations to meet these challenges head-on.”

Referring to Thailand’s sufficiency economy philosophy, Srettha said economy models could be developed to leverage resources to grow without compromising the environment and ecosystems.

“The sufficiency economy philosophy or SEP, our long-standing, locally driven development approach has consistently been applied to promote balance of all respects,” he told the assembly. “Building on the SEP is the bio circular green economy model, which leverages science, technology and innovation to advance economic growth while conserving the environment and ecosystems. These are not merely concepts, but they are being implemented in Thailand."

Srettha also said that as an Asean Coordinator on Sustainable Development Cooperation, Thailand is committed to forging closer ties among Asean countries and beyond to drive forward sustainable development and build resilience.

The PM then told the assembly that Thailand welcomes the Climate Ambition Summit to accelerate climate action that will mitigate the destructive impacts of the ongoing climate crisis. He called on countries to devise the means to adapt and enhance climate resilience to ensure food security for the world.

While in New York for the General Assembly, the premier also spoke with Tesla’s Elon Musk and discussed the electric vehicle industry via video conference.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin denied on Friday that he said he would appoint former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra as an advisor, but added that he welcomed advice from all former PMs if it benefits the country.
Srettha was clarifying remarks made in an interview with Bloomberg Television in New York on Thursday. News outlets interpreted his comments as hints that Thaksin would get an advisory role in his government once the former premier was freed from prison.

He told Bloomberg: “I believe he [Thaksin] has value to add to the government and to the people of Thailand,” and “It would be unwise of me not to seek his opinion and that of other prime ministers as well.”

On Friday, Srettha told reporters to review the interview carefully, insisting that he never said that he would appoint Thaksin as an advisor.

“I was asked if I would consult Thaksin, and I replied that I would consult all former PMs,” he said. “The first one I sought advice from was General Prayut Chan-o-cha when I took office.”

Srettha also said that he had met other former premiers since taking office. He visited Anand Panyarachun at his home and met Somchai Wongsawat in Chiang Mai.

“As a novice, I believe it would be damaging to the country if I didn’t seek advice from these people,” Srettha said. “Not only former PMs, I also welcome advice from anyone, be they former deputy PMs, trade representatives, ministers, or permanent secretaries. I am not discriminating against any colours or political beliefs. Any advice that would benefit the country I would gladly take,” he added.

By colours, he was referring to the Red Shirt group, Thaksin supporters, and their opponents, the Yellow Shirt group.

Thaksin is serving jail sentences in multiple corruption cases following his return to Thailand after 15 years of self-imposed exile. He was sent to Police General Hospital for treatment just hours after his return on a private jet on August 22.

The ex-premier recently saw his eight-year jail term reduced to one year due to a royal pardon. His family is looking at the possibility of securing his early release on parole, possibly in February.

The Digital Economy and Society Ministry plans to continue cracking down on online scammers, especially call centre gangs, with a three-point plan that involves a war room, artificial intelligence (AI), and a “cyber vaccine”.

The first step of the ministry’s plan is to set up a “Task Force Command Centre”, or war room, Minister Prasert Chantararuangthong said on Friday.

It will take aggressive action against cyber crimes, including financial scams and other online threats. It will also crack down on those who pretend to be government officials or agencies and create fake websites to scam victims, Prasert added.

The second part of the plan is to use advanced technology, such as data analytics and AI, to monitor online information for fake news through an anti-fake news centre. The centre will allow people to check the URLs of news or information sites. It will use AI to check the database of fake news sites the ministry has accumulated for more than four years and analyse whether the information matches the pattern of past fake news, the minister explained.

Prasert said his ministry would also give a “cyber vaccine” to those who face a high risk of being scammed, namely children, students, and seniors.

“We will provide suitable learning activities for these groups, so they can develop an immunity against scammers and fake news,” he explained. “By spreading this immunity at family and community levels, we will be able to create a culture of using discretion in news consumption and sharing of information over the internet, and ultimately reduce the risk of being scammed,” he said.

Two archrival political parties – the Democrats and Pheu Thai – are both facing a dilemma: they need to select new party leaders after a contentious election that resulted in the resignation of their leaders.

The Democrats, the country’s oldest political party, have been shrinking and need a jolt to reverse this trend, while Pheu Thai – despite having one of its own members elected prime minister – is now part of the establishment with ties to parties linked to the generals who ousted it from power in 2014.

Pheu Thai prime ministerial candidate, former real estate magnate Srettha Thavisin, is now PM, but the party had to pay a price to get him there.

Its leader, Cholnan Srikaew, had to step down. He promised during the campaign that his party would not forge a coalition with the pro-military side. “I hold myself accountable for what I have said,” said Cholnan, who – despite stepping down – currently serves as minister of public health.

The spotlight then switched to Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the daughter of former premier and Pheu Thai patriarch Thaksin Shinawatra. She told reporters: “If the party chooses me as the next leader, I will gladly accept the invitation.”

Her status inside the party has grown steadily. She started as the party’s chief adviser for participation and innovation in 2021 before ending up as one of three prime ministerial candidates vying for a May 14 election victory.

She now has a top-level position on the strategic committee to promote soft power.

Political scientist Stithorn Thananithichot, however, is doubtful she will lead the party. Stithorn is an academic at King Prajadhipok's Institute, which is under the control of the president of the parliament.

The real power of Pheu Thai does not belong to its leader, so the next leader does not have to be a very prominent figure, Stithorn explained, adding that electing her might also be "risky".

She could be expelled from politics if the party is dissolved in the future, which is what happened to the Thai Rak Thai Party (Pheu Thai's predecessor) in 2007. More than 100 politicians were knocked out of politics when the party was dissolved.

Stithorn said that the next Pheu Thai leader just needs to be an experienced MP and suggested former deputy PM Chalerm Yubamrung will take on the role when Pheu Thai elects its next leader on October 16.

    The Democrat deadlock

Former leader Jurin Laksanawisit stepped down to take responsibility for the party’s crushing defeat in the May 14 election, which saw its number of MPs fall from 53 to just 25.

A generational clash is tearing the party apart, analysts say. Two meetings to pick a new leader collapsed due to a lack of quorums. The shrinking party is reportedly split into two factions – one led by acting secretary-general Chalermchai Sri-on, who wants to establish an alliance with Pheu Thai, and the other by veteran MPs like Chuan Leekpai, who want the Democrats to shine on the opposition bench.

Stithorn said that the inability to pick a new leader was due to senior MPs absent from meetings to select a leader to avoid losing. The fact that Pheu Thai is regarded as the arch enemy of veteran Democrats is blocking the party from picking a new leader.

Neither faction of the party is willing to compromise, Stithorn said.

He said they would have to work together to end the impasse. What may happen, Stithorn said, is that a senior Democrat MP becomes the new leader and Chalermchai's faction will be expelled so that it can join Pheu Thai.

Whether this scenario will emerge remains up in the air. The party cannot even agree on when it will hold its next meeting to elect a new leader.

A new committee tasked with preparing for the drafting of a new constitution will be appointed by next Friday, a key government figure said on Saturday.

Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, who also holds the Commerce portfolio, said a number of political veterans have already agreed to join the panel.

Veterans joining the Phumtham-chaired panel include legal expert Choosak Sirinin, who hails from the ruling Pheu Thai Party, and Nikorn Chamnong from the coalition Chart Thai Pattana Party.

“They both have a good understanding of the law and their previous work has been related to constitutions,” Phumtham said.

He added that other potential contenders have been approached, though they should add up to no more than 30.

The panel members will come from various occupations and include representatives from the government and opposition parties.

He said a new charter would be drafted and its organic laws would be issued within the Pheu Thai-led government’s tenure, setting new rules in time for the next general election.

“This [new] constitution will be democratic and acceptable to all sides. We need a consensus and must ensure the final draft is passed in Parliament,” Phumtham said.

He also insisted that the first two chapters in the current charter involving the state and the monarchy would be left untouched.

“We won’t touch Chapters 1 and 2 about royal powers to avoid creating conflicts,” he said.

Officially, his committee is tasked with “studying methods to hold a national referendum”, and its name does not mention amending the constitution or preparing for the drafting of a new one.

Phumtham expects the final list of committee members to be available by next Friday and submitted for Cabinet endorsement at its meeting on October 3.

“When we get all the committee members, I will call the first meeting to set a clear timeframe of work and how a referendum can be organised. Also, how many referendums will be held and what questions will be asked,” said Phumtham, who is also Pheu Thai’s caretaker deputy leader.

“I can confirm that we will be formulating a democratic constitution. We will adhere to the Constitutional Court’s ruling on how it can be done,” he said.

The Constitutional Court ruled in March 2021 that as the current Constitution, in force since April 2017, was backed by a majority of voters in a national referendum, any major changes can only be done after eligible voters are consulted in a plebiscite.

Phumtham also said on Saturday that for the sake of speed, his committee would base its work on the now-defunct 1997 Constitution, with some revisions to reflect the current political situation.

The 1997 Constitution was described as a “people’s charter” as it was written with inputs from members of the public at the behest of an elected government.

Critics, however, accused then-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra of abusing provisions in the charter for the benefit of his family and political cohorts while his Thai Rak Thai Party was in power. The charter was abolished after the September 2006 military coup, which deposed Thaksin’s government, during his second term in power.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s visit to New York to attend the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly was successful in fostering relationships and increasing trade and investment with other countries, Prime Minister's Office spokesperson Chai Watcharong said.

Srettha met with several foreign leaders, made five speeches and met with leaders of major corporations, including Tesla, Google, Microsoft, Citibank, JP Morgan, and Estee Lauder. These companies showed interest in investing more in Thailand, Chai said.

Srettha expressed confidence that several foreign investors will invest at least US$5 billion each in Thailand and that he hopes Thai companies will register on the New York Stock Exchange next year.

Talks were also held with FIFA executives about the possibility of Thailand hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2032. Additionally, support for football was increased significantly, with sponsorship raised from the previous 250,000 baht per year to 2 million baht per year.

Chai said the UN meeting called for greater cooperation among countries to implement Sustainable Development Goal 17, which focusses on global cooperation for sustainable development.

Srettha acknowledged that global warming is a global crisis.

His next major overseas trip will be for the Apec Summit from November 11-17 in San Francisco. It will be a platform to support trade, investment, and economic development in Thailand, Chai said.

Concerned Thais and environmentalists have expressed alarm at Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s support for a 2.2-trillion-baht water management project on the Mekong, Chi and Mun rivers.

“I hope the prime minister will not rush to give the project a green light. I really hope he will study the information carefully before making a decision,” said Asst Prof Sitang Pilailar, a water-management expert at Kasetsart University’s Faculty of Engineering.

She warned that the situation of the Mekong River is uncertain and threatened by China’s plans to build more dams upstream, with global warming could also reduce the river’s volume significantly.

“If the government jumps too fast to a conclusion, the huge 2.2-trillion-baht budget may be wasted,” the academic said.

    Mega project in the making?

    My 2 cents…….

Asst Prof Sitang Pilailar is correct. It’s China’s water! They will keep as much as they need, first.

Newly appointed Industry Minister Pimpattra Wichaikul reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the Southern Economic Corridor (SEC)’s Land Bridge Project, saying all steps will be taken to expedite the initiative.

She was speaking to the press on Saturday after returning from a two-day trip to Chumphon.

Pimpattra explained that the project aims to connect the coasts of the Andaman Sea on the West and the Gulf of Thailand, particularly the provinces of Chumphon and Ranong.

The Land Bridge project was initially launched by former premier General Prayut Chan-o-cha, who recognised its potential to stimulate the economy and boost connectivity in the South.

In response to concerns raised by the private industry, including Chumphon’s chambers of industry, commerce and agriculture, the industry minister said she has taken action to address potential delays in the project.

The minister has also instructed the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) to expedite the study of guidelines for establishing industrial estates in areas that will complement the SEC in four provinces, namely Chumphon, Ranong, Surat Thani and Nakhon Si Thammarat.

The project’s focus will revolve around key industries like agriculture and food, biotechnology and health and wellness tourism.

In a bid to uplift provinces on the coast of the Gulf in the South, like Chumphon, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Surat Thani and Songkhla, the Industry Ministry is keen to:

    • Improve regulations related to mining and forestry, especially since some hilly forested areas are abundant in minerals
    • Add value to regional agricultural products
    • Address challenges and boost the value of oil palm and rubber industries, with special attention to mitigating drought-related issues affecting raw material quality

The government is also placing a strong emphasis on nurturing the capabilities of entrepreneurs to enhance their competitiveness. This will cover the development of smart agricultural industry entrepreneurs across all provinces, the minister said.

Recognising the legal hurdles faced by the private sector, the government will work to expedite solutions to several problems, she said. This includes streamlining regulations, facilitating access to funding and prioritising environmentally friendly production processes. Public participation will also be encouraged to improve the well-being of the population, while the professional skills of entrepreneurs will be enhanced through the creation of smart agricultural industry entrepreneurs, Pimpattra added.

Foreign multi-national companies are now less worried about investing in Thailand, except for some legal issues which need to be addressed to facilitate investment, claimed Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin upon his return from his four-day visit to the United States, to attend the United Nations General Assembly.

He told a news conference today (Sunday) that one of his duties during the visit was to inform world business leaders that Thailand is open and ready to welcome all foreign investors, as he talked about his meetings with executives of Microsoft, Tesla, Google and JP Morgan, during which he asked them to consider investing in Thailand.

For instance, he said, he asked Microsoft to invest in developing a regional data centre in Thailand, a project which requires at least US$5 billion in investment, and Tesla to invest in building an electric vehicle assembly plant in the country.

During his meeting with the management of the New York stock exchange, the prime minister said he told them of his wish for a Thai corporation to be listed on the New York stock market in the future.

Srettha said he had told the UN general assembly of Thailand’s adherence to democracy, with the King as the head of the state, the principles of human rights and support of sustainable economic development.

He also informed the assembly of his government’s plan to upgrade the 30-baht universal healthcare scheme to a “30-baht plus” program, to ensure access to better health care.

He also said that, during his forthcoming attendance at the APEC Summit, he will meet with representatives of mid-sized foreign companies to try to convince them to invest in Thailand.

The increase in the minimum wage to 400 baht per day recently announced by the new government has sparked various reactions from different sectors.
While some see it as a positive move to boost the overall economy and improve the financial well-being of workers, others are concerned about its impact on production costs and consumer prices. The effects on different industries, such as real estate, construction, agriculture, and manufacturing, will vary, and government policies and industry responses will play a crucial role in shaping the outcome.

Here some leading business leaders express their views.

    Wage increases should be gradual

Marisa Sukosol Nunbhakdi, president of the Thai Hotels Association (THA), says that while the government's policy to increase the minimum wage to 400 baht per day will have positive effects on the labour market and the flow of money in the system, the plan to raise the daily wage to 600 baht per day within 2027 would impact the cost of business operations, especially for SMEs. The Thai Hotel Association has thus requested the government to reconsider this policy and take into account the economic situation and potential in each province, as many areas are still recovering from the impacts of Covid-19. There is also the issue of high energy costs, gas, and electricity, all of which continue to be significant expenses in the hotel industry, along with the problem of labour shortages in the service sector.

Chamnan Srisawat, president of the Tourism Council of Thailand (TCT), said he has no issue with the policy of gradually raising the minimum wage to 400 baht per day. However, he wishes the government would implement wage increases more gradually, as an abrupt increase would cause distress for tourism operators and hotels.

The planned increase to 600 baht per day by 2027 will likely require business operators to find ways to control costs, such as increasing the proportion of part-time employment to maintain productivity.

Tourism operators and hotels are already paying wages and adjusting them according to skills, he stressed. When the government proceeds with a wage increase policy, it should be based on upskilling and reskilling, and it should assist the private sector in upgrading the skills of the workforce, he added.

At the same time, he hopes the government will introduce measures to help businesses reduce other costs, such as electricity and water, and implement tourism stimulus programmes, similar to the previous government’s “We Travel Together” project. This would boost income from the domestic market and reduce the risk of foreign market dependency.

    Foreign investors may look elsewhere

Wasan Kiangsiri, president of the Housing Business Association, noted that the policy of raising the minimum wage to 400 baht and 600 baht by 2027, an average increase of 14-15%, requires cooperation from all parties involved. If not carefully managed, it could lead to workforce reductions for some businesses, while those who remain may have to work longer hours. A balance must therefore be found because if wages rise without control over product prices, there will undoubtedly be consequences.

From the long-term perspective, he warned that high wage increases could lead foreign investors to consider investing in neighbouring countries where labour costs are lower.

Housing prices will also be affected, he said, adding that businesses should focus on cost management.

Peerapong Jaroon-ek, president of the Thai Condominium Association and CEO of Origin Property, holds a different view. He believes the wage increase policy, which he sees as acceptable because it increases people's income, will have a positive effect on purchasing power, especially in the real estate sector.

In terms of its impact on costs, the minimum wage increase to 400 baht will have a minimal effect, and he sees no need to adjust prices unless it goes up to 600 Baht per day, which would have a more significant impact.

Vittakarn Chandavimol, executive vice president at AP (Thailand), stated that the increase in the minimum wage to 400 baht may have a 1-2% impact on costs and could affect prices due to other associated costs such as construction materials and continuously rising land prices. Overall, it could influence price adjustments, even though labour costs are not significantly high compared to other costs.

AP has plans for cost management by purchasing materials in advance to control costs, enabling them to maintain product prices suitable for consumer demand.

Sutee Ketsiri, managing director of Built to Build Group, expressed concern that the gradual increase in the minimum wage to 600 Baht by 2027 from the previous average of about 353 baht per day, would impact the real estate and construction industries. This could lead to a further increase in house prices, driven by increased labour and construction material costs. Additionally, the government's policy to distribute 10,000 baht digital cash to stimulate the economy is expected to result in clear price increases for various products.

He added that the Thai economy has shown signs of improvement since the establishment of the new government and that confidence among consumers and the export sector is gradually recovering.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and representatives of the Thai tourism sector and Ministry of Tourism and Sports went to Suvarnabhumi airport this morning (Monday) to welcome the first group of 341 Chinese tourists arriving in Thailand without a visa, under the Visa Exemption program which came into effect today and will last until February 29.

Similar welcoming ceremonies for tourists from China and Kazakhstan were held at Don Mueang, Phuket and Chiang Mai airports.

Besides the direct flight by Thai AirAsia X from Shanghai, which landed at Suvarnabhumi airport this morning, there are three flights scheduled to arrive today at Don Mueang airport from Kunming, Changsha and Nanning, two flights at Chiang Mai airport from Shanghai and Kunming, one flight at Phuket airport from Kazakhstan and three flights from Shanghai, Beijing and Hangzhou.

At Suvarnabhumi airport, the arriving Chinese tourists were each presented with a souvenir and a lei by the prime minister and his staff.

The prime minister told the Thai media that the most important thing for the foreign tourists is their safety “from the moment they step foot on Thai soil until they depart the country for home.”

He said that he does not want tourists to just visit the four main tourist destinations, but secondary cities as well and wants them to stay in Thailand longer.

He added that he learned from Thai tourism-related businesses that advance hotel bookings have increased substantially ahead of start of the visa free program.

Meanwhile, Tourism and Sports Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol said she is confident that the visa free program will help boost the Thai economy in general and the domestic tourism business in particular, especially family tour groups, package tours and incentive tour groups, during the third quarter of the year.

She expects tourist arrivals for the whole year to reach 30 million.

Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool predicts that 2.8 million Chinese tourists will visit Thailand under the visa free program, generating about 140 billion baht in revenue.

She also predicts that about 129,000 tourists from Kazakhstan will visit under the same program, representing an increase of 49.7% year on year, generating about 7.9 billion baht in revenue.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has ordered the formation of a committee to investigate an incident involving a team of cybercrime police officers who conducted a search on the residence of deputy National Police chief Surachate "Big Joke" Hakparn early on Monday (September 25).

The prime minister has assured all involved parties of fair treatment. Srettha emphasised that the investigative committee must comprise people from outside the police force to ensure fairness.

The PM, who also oversees the Police Civil Service Commission, was speaking after a 30-strong team of cybercrime police commandos, with a court-issued search warrant, tried to search Surachate’s residence, over alleged involvement in illegal online gambling by Surachate and / or his subordinates. Srettha mentioned that he had received initial reports on this matter, but there had not been any more information as of now.

"Recently, I had a conversation with National Police chief General Damrongsak [Kittiprapas], who is currently conducting the investigation. A committee would likely be formed with external individuals involved because I see this as a significant problem," said Srettha.

Srettha said he had not given any specific orders as they were awaiting more information. However, he said he had discussed with his advisers about the formation of an investigative committee made up of members from outside the police force, as this problem had become serious and was connected to several other issues. They need to review the information again and assure fairness to all parties involved. He emphasised that this was a matter of the public's trust.

The PM confirmed that it was part of a policy to combat influential figures, and would be carried out in conjunction with what Deputy Prime Minister and the Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul was doing. However, it was crucial to ensure fairness to all parties involved, the prime minister reiterated.

Thailand will talk with Cambodia about online scammers who operate along the border when both countries’ prime ministers meet this week, said Thai Foreign Minister Parnpree Bahiddha-Nukara.

The scammers have been annoying and have caused a lot damage for the Thai public, Parnpree said, adding that urgent suppression is needed.

Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin is scheduled to visit Phnom Penh on Thursday this week, during which he will hold talks with Cambodia’s new Prime Minister Hun Manet. Cambodia is the first ASEAN country Srettha will visit after officially taking office earlier this month.

Parnpree said Thailand wants to suppress all scammer operations, not one by one which would be an endless job.

Parnpree, also a deputy prime minister, visited border the province of Sa Kaeo on Monday, where he observed the progress of the building of the Thai-Cambodian Friendship Bridge, linking Ban Nong Ian in Aranyaprathet district with Cambodia’s Ban Stung Bot in Oddar Meanchey district.

He was briefed that the bilateral border trade in the province, between October 2022 and August 2023, was valued at Bt103.6 billion

The minister quoted the army as telling him that it was responsible for clearing the landmines along the border in an area covering about 100 square kilometres.

The work has been in progress and now only 5.9 square kilometres are left. Parnpree said he will raise the issue with the Cambodian side, to develop the now safe area for the benefit of both peoples.

“Thailand is ready to develop the land and we will ask Phnom Penh about the idea. If it is OK, both countries could develop it into an economic zone,” the minister said.

Three retired senior government officials have been appointed by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin to investigate the scandal in which at least eight police officers, including a division commander, are suspected of involvement in an online gambling business.

The retired officials are Chatchai Promlert, former interior permanent secretary, as head of the probe panel, former deputy attorney-general Chartpong Jiraphan and Pol Lt-Gen Winai Thongsong, a former deputy national police chief.

The appointment order, issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, said that the scandal has attracted widespread public interest and has seriously affected public confidence in the justice system in Thailand, at a time when the government is trying to crack down on Mafia-type influential figures and illegal activities, especially online gambling business.

The committee is authorised to uncover facts about the police raids, including the one on the home of the deputy national police chief, and alleged police involvement in the illegal activities. It is to report its findings to the prime minister in 30 days and to report progress every ten days. The 30-day deadline for the completion of the probe can be extended if necessary by the prime minister.

The committee is empowered to appoint two officials from the Office of the Secretary-General of the Prime Minister as its assistant secretaries.

The three retirees are widely recognised in government circles for their honesty, integrity and capabilities.

Meanwhile, deputy national police chief, Pol Gen Surachate, filed a complaint with the Criminal Court today (Tuesday), seeking justice for himself and his subordinates over the raid on his house yesterday and the arrests of his subordinates.

The embattled deputy national police chief accused cyber task force police of hiding the facts about his presence at the house they sought to search, adding that, had the court known that he was there and that he had not been charged with committing an office, the court would not have issued the warrant.

He is also seeking justice for his subordinates, against whom arrest warrants had been issued, noting that, according to normal procedure, summonses should be issued first and arrest warrants should be issued when there are reasons to believe that the suspects may escape.

The Minister of Public Health, Cholnan Srikaew, on Tuesday declared his opposition to marijuana use for recreational purposes, and demanded tight regulations to control its use.

The use of marijuana was decriminalised by the previous government, but Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has said that his administration would ensure marijuana use would be restricted for medicinal purposes.

“The law [on the cannabis] would need to be rewritten,” Srettha told news media Bloomberg last week when he was in New York to attend a UN meeting.

Cholnan told reporters on Tuesday that the consumption of cannabis for reasons other than medical purposes required stringent regulations so as to prevent harm to people's health. He said cannabis contained narcotics at levels higher than what is allowed by law and posed a threat to the people's health.

He said the ministry had not included any action to deal with the cannabis situation in its “13 quick-win policies”, as the implementation of any step would need a long time, and require assistance from other departments, including the Ministry of Justice.

Among the 13 quick-win policies, which aim to create concrete results within 100 days, are setting up wellness communities, promoting health services, and improving the health system in border areas.

Cholnan added that any action taken in regard to cannabis must be thorough as it could result in harm rather than good.

Asked about the fate of numerous cannabis stores that have mushroomed across the kingdom, he said laws must be put in place to deal with them, adding: “We are working to maximise benefits for all parties while maintaining the safety of [people's] health.”

Cholnan said that he would soon talk with Anutin Charnvirakul, the leader of the cannabis-friendly Bhumjaithai Party, on the matter.

Gosh, whoudda thunk it, the Thai introduced a policy without foreseeing consequences, without a regulatory framework, without any provision for enforcement and without any functioning licensing system.

    Still, they are amusing.

Aerial emergency medical units, known as “Sky Doctors”, will be set up in every health district nationwide within 100 days to serve tourists for the upcoming New Year holidays, Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew said.

The new units were among the key points discussed at a meeting of the Emergency Medical Committee, which Dr Cholnan chairs, today.

Cholnan said that rapid access or specialised medical care in emergency situations is key to saving lives. Many areas of the country face challenges in accessing emergency care due to their remote locations or traffic congestion in urban areas. The Sky Doctors will use helicopters to transport medical teams to these areas, which will improve the chances of survival for patients in need of emergency care.

Sky Doctors already operate in some regions of the northern and southern parts of the country.

The new policy mandates that they be expanded to all 13 health districts nationwide within 100 days.

Dr Atchariya Pangma, Secretary-General of the National Institute for Emergency Medicine, said teams of Sky Doctors have been operating since 2009. The institute, in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health and partner networks, provides emergency medical services via aircraft to increase the chances of survival for emergency patients.

From 2021 to 2023, Sky Doctors performed 401 operations. They have airlifted 398 patients for emergency treatment and delivered three organs. There are currently nine approved medical air ambulance units, located in three health districts. The nationwide expansion of the service is expected to be completed in December.

The Thai government is planning to restore its free trade agreement (FTA) with India as well as jointly work towards solving trade obstacles between the two countries as soon as possible, Thai Trade Representative Nalinee Taveesin said on Thursday.

Nalinee, who also serves as an advisor to the prime minister, said that she recently discussed the possibility of resuming the suspended FTA with India with Nagesh Singh, India’s ambassador to Thailand.

In 2006, Thailand and India entered into an FTA under the Early Harvest Scheme, covering tariff exemption on 83 products including fresh fruits, cereals, processed meat, minerals, chemicals, automotive parts and electrical appliances, said Nalinee.

The FTA was suspended in 2016 after India shifted to negotiating an FTA with Asean nations to expand its export markets, she added.

Nalinee said India viewed Thailand as having high investment potential and as one of the economic hubs in the Indo-Pacific region, and the sub-continent was therefore interested in restoring the suspended FTA with Thailand.

Both sides hope the restored FTA will lead to expanded operations of the Thai-Indian joint trade committee and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), of which Thailand is a member.

The two sides agreed that the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC), of which both Thailand and India are members, could serve as a platform to address and solve trade obstacles and boost cooperation with other member countries.

The ambassador said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is looking forward to attending the BIMSTEC Summit to be hosted by Thailand in November.

He added that India is also looking for cooperation from Thai start-ups under the Startups India Initiative, which aims to boost the country’s economy to achieve a value of US$5 trillion by 2025.

According to Singh, there is a high demand in India for several products from Thailand, namely shrimps, meats, drugs and pharmaceutical products. The country is also looking to promote cooperation on national security through armaments for which India has high potential, such as helicopters and submarines.

Trade value between Thailand and India in 2022 was recorded at US$17.7 billion, expanding 18.06% year on year and making the country Thailand’s 7th largest trade partner.

Exports to India, valued at US$10.5 billion, include plastic pellets, vegetable and animal fat and oil, chemicals, jewellery, iron and steel.

Imports from India, valued at US$7.17 billion, include gems, gold and silver bars, machines and parts, minerals, chemicals, and plant products.

Every month of his premiership, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin will donate his salary to various charitable foundations, according to government spokesman Chai Wacharonke.

The first donation will go to the Foundation for Children.

Srettha, also Finance Minister, receives a total of Bt125,590 (Bt75,590 plus a Bt50,000 position allowance) per month, the spokesman said.

Chai quoted Srettha as saying that giving is a good thing and one should give as much as one can. “This should start with oneself,” he added

There will be a working team to select the recipient charities. The premier will find an opportunity to meet the charities, to listen to their needs and problems so that he can help find solutions.

Representatives of certain groups on Thursday presented to Parliament on behalf of the public the drafts of three bills in the hope that lawmakers would pass legislation on same-sex marriage, promote gender acceptance, and redefine prostitution.

The drafts were accepted by first deputy House Speaker Padipat Suntiphada.

The draft Marriage Equality Bill proposes amending Section 1448 of the Civil and Commercial Code, which limits the definition of marriage to a man and a woman, by making the marriage law applicable to any couple, regardless of gender.

The draft bill on "gender identity, gender expression and sexuality" proposes that official certificates accept the gender that an individual identifies as.

The third draft is an an amendment to the 1996 Prevention and Suppression of Prostitution Act, specifically to define sex workers as legal professionals who are entitled to rights and freedom to work equally.

The three bills share the same goals of ensuring sexual equality, promoting acceptance and equal treatment of all individuals regardless of their genders, sexual identity, or profession, said a representative.

“We urge Parliament to seriously consider these drafts, as the previous Parliament failed to pass the laws that would help offer equality and justice to all members of society,” they added.

Padipat told the representatives that Parliament would consider the drafts and open a public hearing session as soon as possible.

Only the marriage equality bill passed first reading in Parliament in June last year, but never passed the second reading due to several problems, including a delay to make way for the deliberation of other bills and the lack of quorum.
