So are you predicting that the next elected Russian President (whenever that might be) will be, y'know, "pro-West" 'arry?
You sound like Donald trump.
Putin will be returned as he has rigged the media and gaoled the opposition. I did not say Russia will be a third world economy. Its economy has already declined it would no longer make the G8 by GDP. It will be a declining economy. Hard to predict the decline of the west as covid has taken its toll. A declining 44 trillion economy will take much longer than one around 1.7 trillion. The Russians can only re arrange the deck chairs on the titanic and not much else. Please let me know which economy has increased its GDP substantially without trade with the west. Sanctions is just another word for isolation from western economies. Even with partial sanctions no economy does well. Iran Venezuela Cuba would all thrive if sanctions were lifted but somehow Russia will still thrive as it becomes more isolated from the west. The Russian people fed on a diet of bullshit and a combination of the return of Peter the great and the glory days of the soviet union may swallow that tripe until the sanctions really bite but then we will see. China is only the engine room because the west allowed it to be so, partly from greed and partly for the same reason the E.U. traded with Russia, expecting slow democratisation with increased wealth. This is now recognised by most western countries as a failed theory and I expect to see a gradual removal of any reliance on China and certainly Russian energy over time. Africa will not replace the west, It is just one big hole that swallows money with little progress for the last 70 or 80 years. Even South Africa and Zimbabwe, once the bread basket of Africa are now little better than basket cases.
Oh, so every place is gonna drop in a big hole except the West. Nice bit of confirmation bias here.
Sabang thinks Russia has "elections".
How cute.
The "west's" combined gdp is $86 trillion.
Russia's $1.5 trillion.
Whole lot of decline before Russia catches up.
California leaving the "west" and joining Russia would help. Triple Russian gdp adding $3.1 trillion to Russia gdp.
Don't hold your breath Sab. Even Putin knows he will not win an economic war.
"Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect,"
Russia- p'fft. I do not anticipate a high rate of growth there! China, India, Indonesia etc are where the real growth is. Actually most of the Worlds current GDP growth is contained within Asia. So of course is Russia- but that isn't where the growth is, even minus the sanctions.
Well lets face it, Asia is probably Russia's saving grace. If they didn't have contiguous China & India to export to, they would indeed be in deep shit from the sanctions.
Russia is not under export sanctions from either China (it's largest trade partner) or India. What on earth is your point, or is this just more childish pique because you know the sanctions are not working?
- China-Russia trade up 28.9% in Jan-May; further growth expected - Global Times
Sab has taken on the role of contrarian here. All fine by me. It keeps the thread cooking.
A'www diddums- the sanctions are not working. All hurt and bitter are we?
The World Snubs Biden on Russia Sanctions
JUNE 9, 2022 BY RICHARD C. YOUNG
Joe Biden has always puffed himself up as a “foreign policy expert.” Mostly his belief in his foreign policy prowess originates from his long tenure on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Biden joined the committee in the 1970s, and was its chairman or ranking member for 12 years.
But during his time in the White House, every foreign policy issue he touches seems to go wrong. Afghanistan, the border, upsetting the French with a surprise new AUKUS alliance, a complete meltdown of relations with the Saudis, begging the Venezuelans for oil, and perhaps most importantly for Biden, the failure to build a global coalition to support his fight against Russia in Ukraine.

The perverse effects of sanctions means rising fuel and food costs for the rest of the world – and fears are growing of a humanitarian catastrophe. Sooner or later, a deal must be made
