A lot of people might agree if it hadn't been so belligerent and self serving in years gone by.

Certainly lots of Asia isn't impressed with the damage it did.

Credit to the then-Malaysian PM for his wise leadership.

    The View, from China-untitled-jpg

A LUXURY estate in southern Malaysia built by the Chinese has been left to rot - and has become the most controversial development in the country's history.

Dubbed the "ghost city", the $100billion estate is built on reclaimed land far off from the nearest major city in Johor Bahru.

Built by Country Garden - China's largest property developer - under Xi Jinping's Belt and Road Initiative, Forest City was pitched as "a dream paradise for all mankind".

Back in 2016 when it was being constructed, the Chinese real-estate market was in full bloom.

Developers were borrowing unfathomable amounts of money to invest in property buildings aimed at middle-class buyers who live abroad.

Country Garden had the same plans in Malaysia, if not, even bigger.

The goal was to build an eco-friendly metropolis featuring a golf course, waterpark, offices, bars, and restaurants.

Spread across thousands of acres of land - almost four times the size of Monaco - Forest City was going to be the home for one million people, according to the Chinese company.

But eight years down the line, it stands as an
abandoned ghost town on the banks of a crocodile-infested river.

Just 15 per cent of the total project has been finished and only a few hundred people live in the high-rise developments.

While the Chinese developers said it was built for middle-class people, the selling prices of residential units were far out of reach for ordinary Malaysians. An average condo today in the development retails for around $1.14million.

The average sale price of a property in Johor Bahru - the biggest city near the development - is around $141,000.

As a result, a major part of the ambitious project is vacant - with only a bunch of people scattered around the man-made city.

Signs of large developments are everywhere - there is a sales gallery, an international school, resorts, and huge high-rise luxurious buildings everywhere.

But what cannot be seen in this overly ambitious project are signs of life.

All the retail shops and shopping complexes are all either closed or have been abandoned due to a lack of business.

Each of the high-rise apartments houses hundreds of flats, but no more than a few of them have their lights on.
When the night falls, the entire city becomes pitch dark.

Joanne Kaur, one of the residents of Forest City, told the
    BBC: "This place is eerie.

"Even during the day, when you step out of your front door, the corridor is dark.
"I feel sorry for people who actually invested and bought a place here.
"We are looking to move out as soon as possible."

She and her husband live on the 28th storey of one of the tower blocks - and are the only ones on the whole floor.

A stark reality of the development can be seen on social media, where many people criticise the posts that praise the developments of the city.

One such user wrote: "The current Forest City is a ghost town. There are no people at all.
"It is far from the city, has incomplete living facilities, and it is difficult to move without a car."
Several unique factors have played roles in forcing Forest City to become what it is today.

Apart from the Chinese government's strict limits on big property developers,
Malaysia's then-prime minister Mahathir Mohamad restricted visas for Chinese buyers, citing his objection to a "city built for foreigners".

According to the BBC, some analysts also criticise the wisdom of building such a huge project in a country where the economy and politics are unstable.

    Travel lockdowns during the
Covid-19 pandemic also hampered many overseas projects, including the Forest City.

Chinese FM highlights engagement in talks with UK's Cameron, 'a positive signal' for mending ties

    By Wang Qi

    Published: Dec 06, 2023 08:34 PM Updated: Dec 06, 2023 10:23 PM

"Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stressed the importance of a stable and healthy China-UK ties and cooperation, expressing the hope that the British side will establish a correct understanding of China, during a phone call with British Foreign Secretary David Cameron on Tuesday, ahead of Cameron's US trip starting on Wednesday.

Chinese experts view the conversation as positive, which shows that in the context of an atmosphere of detente between China and the US, and China and the EU, the British government is seemingly attempting to adjust the hawkish China policy it has adopted since the Boris Johnson administration, seek for more pragmatic and cooperative bilateral ties to alleviate the pressure on the economy, and find a more suitable place for the UK in the relationship between China and the US.

In the phone call at the invitation of Cameron, Wang said the steady and sound development of bilateral relations not only serves the fundamental and long-term interests of the two peoples, but also has strategic and global significance for promoting world peace and prosperity......

US should reflect on itself, instead of blaming China, when US Peace Corps fails to return to Solomon Islands: expert

    By GT staff reporters

    Published: Dec 06, 2023 09:55 PM

"Citing China's influence for the US' suspension of returning to the Solomon Islands only demonstrates the US was a bully and troublemaker in the South Pacific region, Chinese analysts said.

In an Al Jazeera article titled "In the Solomon Islands, a US agency's struggles hint at China's influence," a former US official attributed the suspension of approval for the US Peace Corps to return to Solomon Islands to "China's influence."

The official speaking under anonymity is familiar with the negotiations to bring back the Peace Corps, Al Jazeera said.

The agreement is likely to be postponed "indefinitely," according to the anonymous US official.

According to Al Jazeera, the US Peace Corps should have returned to the Solomon Islands in 2019, yet, they have yet to arrive more than four years later. "

All Arab countries have inked BRI cooperation documents with China: Foreign Ministry

    By Global Times

    Published: Dec 06, 2023 05:10 PM

"All Arab countries have signed Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) cooperation documents with China, and China is looking forward to working with Arab countries to jointly promote high-quality construction of BRI to better benefit the people on both sides, Chinese Foreign Ministry (FM) said on Wednesday.

The comment came after China and Jordan on November 29 signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) recently on jointly promoting the construction of the BRI projects in Jordan.

The two sides will actively promote policy coordination, infrastructure connectivity, unimpeded trade, financial integration, and people-to-people ties, and further deepen cooperation in various fields to better benefit the two peoples, the National Development and Reform Commission said on Friday.

So far, China has signed cooperation documents on jointly building the Belt and Road with all 22 Arab countries and the Arab League, said Wang Wenbin, a spokesperson from the Foreign Ministry.

The value of overall trade between China and Arab countries has reached $431.4 billion.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the BRI. During the past 10 years, China and Arab countries, as natural partners in building the BRI, have delivered outstanding results, Wang said.

In 2022, the trade volume between China and Arab countries exceeded $430 billion, double that of 10 years ago. China imported 270 million tons of crude oil from Arab countries, accounting for half of China's total crude imports.

The two-way investment has grown exponentially over the past 10 years, and the two sides have implemented more than 200 large-scale cooperation projects under the framework of BRI, and the results of cooperation have benefited up to 2 billion people on both sides, Wang said. "

Audit finds no 'forced labor' in Volkswagen's Xinjiang plant: company

    By Global Times

    Published: Dec 06, 2023 11:10 AM

"An audit on Volkswagen's jointly owned plant in Northwest China's Xinjiang Autonomous Region found no indications of any use of forced labor, the automaker said on Tuesday.

The audit was carried by Loening - Human Rights & Responsible Business GmbH, among the site's 197 employees in SAIC-Volkswagen (Xinjiang) Automotive Co, a 100 percent subsidiary of the SAIC Volkswagen Co.

The audit work encompassed on-site document checks in Urumqi city as well as interviews with staff and executives of the legal entity in Xinjiang.

Several on-site inspections, including walkabouts of the outdoor premises of the plant were also part of the auditing process.

As of November 1, 2023, the legal entity had 197 employees, of which 150 employees are of Han ethnicity, accounting for 76.1 percent, and 23.9 percent of employees belong to ethnic minorities including Uygurs.

Loening said that the employees are qualified, having worked in the company for a long time of up to 10 years, have a low work intensity and are being remunerated above the average in the region. Overtime work is next to non-existent.

There were no indications of any use of forced labor among the employees at the plant, it said.

Data collected shows that all employees have signed employment contracts with the joint venture, with no agency contracts, and have been employed at the plant for more than four years, and 76 percent having worked there for 8-10 years."

Probably not the first country to realise the parasitic, lying chinkies are no good for them.

Italy has withdrawn from China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), more than four years after becoming the only Group of Seven (G7) nation to sign up.
After months of uncertainty regarding Italy’s involvement in the ambitious project, Rome conveyed its decision in a recent letter to Beijing, news agencies Reuters and AFP reported on Wednesday.

Italy withdraws from China’s Belt and Road Initiative, reports say | Xi Jinping News | Al Jazeera
And of course the stupid chinkies are already whining.

China reacted sharply on Thursday (Dec 7) after Italy said that it would withdraw from the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin slammed what he termed was the 'smearing' of the ambitious infrastructure project. Italy has withdrawn from BRI just four years after it became the only G7 country to join the China-led global initiative.

"China firmly opposes smearing and undermining of cooperation on the joint construction of the Belt and Road," said Wang."

China to work together with Lancang-Mekong River countries to promote regional prosperity

    By Global Times

    Published: Dec 07, 2023 01:00 AM

"China is willing to work together with the countries of the Lancang-Mekong region to discuss cooperation plans and jointly promote regional prosperity, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Wednesday when meeting with Myanmar's Deputy Prime Minister and Union Minister for Foreign Affairs U Than Swe.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, met U Than Swe in Beijing, who will jointly host the eighth Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Foreign Ministers' Meeting on Thursday.

Wang stated that China is willing to work together with the Lancang-Mekong River countries to successfully organize the LMC Foreign Ministers' Meeting and discuss cooperation plans to promote regional prosperity.

U Than Swe said the eighth LMC Foreign Ministers' Meeting is of great significance and looks forward to close cooperation with China to ensure the successful outcome of the meeting.

Wang said that China and Myanmar are comprehensive strategic partners with a long-standing pauk-phaw friendship, always supporting and trusting each other. China hopes that Myanmar can achieve national reconciliation as soon as possible within the framework of the constitution and continue its political transition process.

China never interferes in Myanmar's internal affairs and appreciates Myanmar's adherence to the one-China principle. China believes that Myanmar will continue to firmly oppose "Taiwan independence" and support the cause of China's reunification, Wang added.

Wang emphasized that recent China-Myanmar cooperation in cracking down on telecom fraud in northern Myanmar and rescuing trapped individuals has achieved results, effectively deterring criminals. Both sides need to strengthen law enforcement and security cooperation to completely eradicate the scourge of online gambling and telecom fraud, according to Wang.

U Than Swe expressed that China is Myanmar's most important neighboring country. Myanmar highly values the development of its relationship with China and admires China's achievements, he added, noting Myanmar is willing to deepen cooperation in various fields with China and jointly build a community with a shared future.

Myanmar appreciates China for sharing cooperation opportunities under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative and will accelerate domestic coordination to actively promote the construction of China-Myanmar Economic Corridor, U Than Swe added.

Moreover, U Than Swe said that Myanmar still faces many challenges internally and hopes to continue receiving support and assistance from China to achieve domestic peace and stability. Myanmar will resolutely crack down on cross-border illegal activities such as telecom fraud and will conduct comprehensive coordination and cooperation with China in this regard, he said.

The two sides also had friendly and in-depth exchanges of views on stabilizing the situation in northern Myanmar."

China surpasses the US: America's economy stays on top only through manipulation – Financial Times

    December 7 2023

"Macroeconomic reality has entered the twilight zone. Its indicators and trends are described not by growth factors, but by comparing the rate of deceleration of development on an annualized basis. A more sober look at things shows that the recent optimistic report from the Financial Times about a "soft landing" economics USA and its growth by 5,2% only in November is a myth.

The real picture is described by financial expert Chris Giles.

According to him, in October alone, the US economy shrank year-on-year by about 30%.

This decline is so great that President Joe Biden should be fired immediately, and it also means the end of the American dream.

    – the expert writes directly.

The analyst warns that he is not “crazy.” His conclusions come from a simple recalculation of the exchange rates between the dollar and the yuan and the euro. Giles, as he himself admits, took the total volume of US GDP and converted the resulting amount into the appropriate currencies at the market rate. It was as a result of these calculations that disappointing data was obtained, indicating a fall in the value of the dollar by 3% over the ten months of 2023.

Such a calculation is not at all absurd, as many would think, it reflects global dynamics and is used not for the populism of bravura reports, but for making real investment decisions

    – the specialist warns.

In this sense, the “stagnating” Chinese economy shows the best dynamics. Moreover, according to Giles' calculations, China's indicators declined much less than America's. China also surpasses the United States in terms of purchasing power parity. Judging by the rate of electricity generation and other specific physical production quantities, Beijing is far ahead of Washington.

The expert makes a paradoxical conclusion that America's macroeconomic indicators are published selectively - only those data that reflect only part of the overall sector, the most successful industries to create a positive. Such fraud and manipulation of facts are designed to prevent a further collapse of the dollar. Which, however, is also a good idea, given its role in the global economy."
