China flies at least 20 war planes in Taiwan airspace

At least 20 Chinese military aircraft entered Taiwan's air space on Friday, according to Taiwan's defense ministry.

Why it matters: It is the largest incursion by China's air force since Taiwan's defense ministry has announced almost daily Chinese military exercises into its air space, per Reuters.

A person familiar with Taiwan’s defense planning told Reuters that the Chinese military was simulating an operation against U.S. warships sailing through the Bashi Channel.

China has said the exercises are meant to show its determination to defend the island, which it considers part of Chinese territory, though Taiwan's status is one of the most sensitive political issues between Washington and Beijing.

The big picture: Friday's exercises involved four H-6K bombers, which have nuclear strike capabilities, 10 J-16 fighter jets and six other military planes.

Taiwan said it warned the planes by radio that they were violating its airspace and deployed air defense missile systems to "monitor the activity" of the flight after the aircraft did not change course.

Indeed. Taiwan is not officially recognized as a country. Easy to get high and mighty about China but these are the facts.

It probably should if it wants to prevent the US from taking it.

I'll get you the quote verbatim from the Chinese foreign minister. Tell me why a US navy ship hasn't docked in Taiwan.

You clearly don't know anything about the subject. If you are going to be condescending at least be right.

The US wants to take Taiwan? First I’ve heard of it. Must have been on Canadian news.

A US naval base on Taiwan eventually is their goal. And that would mean Taiwan is in the American sphere.

Just like they tried in Ukraine. If Russia didn't take Crimea , the US would have built a base there. Instead they are building it in Odessa now.

...the more incursions, the sharper and more alert the Taiwanese air defenses will be...and the more pressing the arguments for larger, faster, more updated shipments of US defense armaments...the Chinese military must think it operates in a vacuum...

China will attack Taiwan if the US gives it a certain type of arms. Who is living in a vacuum ?

It will be a Crimea scenario when push comes to shove.

They have very limited diplomatic or military power. Mainland China just wants them to be a part of China on paper. Just no US air or naval bases. Nothing would change in the country. It would be a semi autonomous governorate of China.

This might be WW2 "thinking" misskit.

Does anyone for a moment imagine that any war between the major powers could actually remain "regional"?

You know this as the result of a personal assurance from President Xi?

An SAR, like Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region? Yes, that's going well.

Deliberate incursions are used to exploit intelligence gathering opportunities as the overflown territory reacts. Also, in the event that Taiwan were provoked into retaliatory action by downing these overflights then of course there is the bonus of having manipulated a demonstrable casus belli permitting the commie swine to mount their own no doubt overwhelming response.

Let's just get it over with and let China have it. All this BS about freedom and democracy coming from U.S. & U.K. politicians is the biggest hoax of the past centuries. Let the Asians battle it out and hopefully they will pay a high price.

China's growing firepower casts doubt on whether U.S. could defend Taiwan

WASHINGTON — China's massive arms buildup has raised doubts about America's ability to defend Taiwan if a war broke out, reflecting a shifting balance of power in the Pacific where American forces once dominated, U.S. officials and experts say.

In simulated combat in which China attempts to invade Taiwan, the results are sobering and the United States often loses, said David Ochmanek, a former senior Defense Department official who helps run war games for the Pentagon at the RAND Corp. think tank.

In tabletop exercises with America as the "blue team" facing off against a "red team" resembling China, Taiwan's air force is wiped out within minutes, U.S. air bases across the Pacific come under attack, and American warships and aircraft are held at bay by the long reach of China's vast missile arsenal, he said.

"Even when the blue teams in our simulations and war games intervened in a determined way, they don't always succeed in defeating the invasion," Ochmanek said.

The Taiwanese just need to shot down one Chinese plane. Then they tell the Chinese if they send any more and they will get shot down too.

Is that all it takes? Perhaps you should advise the RAND Corporation...

For someone whose first post included calling Biden a pedophile (is this guy a Brit as well?), he's doing well.
