It appear Joe Biden has opened the door, slightly, for stepping aside. He stated he'd quit the election race if doctors told him he had a medical issue that emerged.

This week is too soon after the Trump attempted assassination, but I think a "medical issue" may suddenly emerge before mid August.

He may be seeing sense at last.

Biden expected to meet with Netanyahu next week, despite COVID diagnosis

President Biden is expected to see Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when he is in Washington next week, but the White House cautioned the president’s recovery from COVID-19 will take priority.

“We have every expectation that the two leaders will have a chance to see each other when Prime Minister Netanyahu is in town,” John Kirby, the White House communications director for national security, told reporters on Thursday.

Kirby said that the president’s health and his recovery after testing positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday will take priority and it is unclear “if and how that might affect the discussion.”

Netanyahu will address a joint session of Congress next Wednesday, and Kirby said the expectation is that the Israeli prime minister will meet with Biden the following day. Vice President Harris is also expected to see the Israeli leader.

“I can’t tell you at this point, Thursday the day what that exactly is going to look like. But as we get closer certainly be able to provide you some more,” Kirby said.

The meeting comes as critics in Israel and the U.S. have accused Netanyahu of prioritizing the military operation against Hamas in the Gaza Strip over an internationally backed cease-fire deal that Biden has taken the lead on promoting.

The Israeli Knesset, its parliament, passed a resolution on Thursday rejecting the establishment of a Palestinian state, a key pillar of Biden’s three-phase cease-fire deal. The resolution passed with an overwhelming majority in the politically fractious government, 68-9.

“I think the best way I can respond to that is to just reiterate our firm belief in the power and the promise of a two state solution,” Kirby said in response to a question about the resolution.

“That is not something that President Biden is going to give up on and we’re going to keep doing everything we can to try to achieve that outcome. We know it’s not going to happen tomorrow. And we know it’s not going to be without difficulty and we also know that it requires leadership. Strong courage and leadership in the region to bring about that outcome.”
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

Behind the Curtain: Top Dems now believe Biden will exit

Several top Democrats privately tell us the rising pressure of party congressional leaders and close friends will persuade President Biden to decide to drop out of the presidential race, as soon as this weekend.

    ________

Five reasons Kamala Harris is probably in if Biden drops out

Top Democrats are convinced President Biden is likely to step aside as early as this weekend to make way for another Democratic presidential nominee.

Why it matters: If he does, Democrats will be forced to make a swift decision that would determine the fate — and the future — of the party for 2024 and beyond.

The big picture: There's a movement underway among some Democratic officials and operatives to bypass Vice President Harris as Biden's successor — or at least make the nomination a contest rather than a coronation.

    • They're floating names like Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, or California Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Reality check: There are at least five reasons the mission to bypass Harris is unlikely to succeed.

What's more baffling is that most think there's a difference between the respected candidates.
    There never has been.

Coons, campaign co-chair, says Biden ‘weighing’ who will be best to defeat Trump

Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.), national co-chair of President Biden’s reelection campaign, said Friday that Biden is “weighing” who would be the best Democratic nominee to defeat former President Trump in November, indicating Biden is carefully evaluating the option of stepping aside for another candidate.

But Coons also emphasized he thinks Biden would be the strongest choice to challenge Trump in the general election, and he later posted a statement on social media declaring Biden is “in it to win it.”

This is an internal party matter and a matter of the campaign that is playing out very publicly. I think our president is weighing what he should weigh, which is: Who is the best candidate to win in November and to carry forward the Democratic Party’s values and priorities in this campaign?” Coons said at the Aspen Security Forum.

He made his remarks after a panel moderator what factors Biden is considering as he decides how to proceed with his campaign amidst calls by Democratic lawmakers to drop out of the race.

Coons reiterated his support for Biden and extolled his record of the last 3 1/2 years.

“He has been an exceptional president. He has campaigned effectively, he has led effectively,” Coons said, citing Biden’s leadership at the NATO summit in Washington last week.

David Letterman will headline Biden fundraiser with Hawaii governor

David Letterman will headline a fundraiser with President Biden in 10 days with Hawaii Gov. Josh Green (D), a sign that his campaign is forging ahead despite continued calls for the president to bow out of the 2024 race.

The fundraiser on July 29 will be at the home of a family friend on Martha’s Vineyard, Mass., Green told The Associated Press Friday. It will feature the longtime late-night host, plus Biden and first lady Jill Biden. The campaign has at least 10 other fundraising events over the last 10 days of July.

Biden hits Trump over RNC speech: ‘What the hell was he talking about?’

President Biden took to social media Friday evening to blast former President Trump over the speech he gave while accepting the GOP presidential nomination at the final night of the Republican National Convention (RNC).

“I’m stuck at home with COVID, so I had the distinct misfortune of watching Donald Trump’s speech to the RNC,” Biden posted on social media platform X. “What the hell was he talking about?”

Biden highlighted some moments in Trump’s speech during his rant, which stretched well past midnight.

“Let’s start with this. Donald said he ‘did a great job’ with COVID,” Biden said. “Folks, this is the same guy who told us to inject bleach while over a million Americans died.”

He also pointed to the former president’s comments about protecting Social Security and Medicare, calling it a “flat-out lie.”

“Trump proposed cutting Social Security and Medicare every year he was in office,” he said. “And he’ll do it again.”

His thread on X targeted his 2024 rival over his rhetoric on tax cuts, ending inflation, electric vehicle mandates and immigration. Biden also mocked the former president for his praise of the fictional serial killer Hannibal Lector, whom Trump has called a “wonderful man.”

“Donald, Hannibal Lecter is not real,” Biden wrote. “And he is a cannibal.”

Clintons privately supporting Biden, encouraging donors, sources say

Former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hilary Clinton are privately supporting Biden and have been encouraging donors to continue giving and stick with the president, two sources familiar with the matter told ABC News.

One source described the Clintons’ support as "encouraging," "supportive" and "deferential" to Biden’s decision to stay in this race.
