    Weapons of Mass Communication

From a patriotic call to eat less bread to proud soldiers extolling the benefits of signing up, these rare wartime posters are some of the finest pieces of propaganda art ever produced. Now they are going on public display for the first time in decades, in an exhibition appropriately named Weapons Of Mass Communication at London's Imperial War Museum.

When it comes to propaganda, not many could match Goebbels in that art.

Maybe in speeches but not in posters. The best German propaganda I've seen was by Leni Riefenstahl and Albert Speer, movies and festivals. Third reich propaganda posters are generally rubbish - British and American ones are far better. There are several dozen of all three types on the political "cartoons" thread.

Nazi propaganda generally extolled the state, showing superhuman soldiers and workers, giant buildings and super-weapons and sub-human enemies (sub-human Jap enemies were also popular in US propaganda) and eventually just led to cynicism and boredom on the part of the population. British WW2 propaganda was more humourous and extolled the little people, German propaganda was all about crushing Europe under the jackboot while British propaganda was for more human and emphasised pulling together, working in harmony, and enduring the bad times stoically. German propaganda said everything was just great and soon the world would be ours but British propaganda said everything was pretty bad but if we all do our bit we'll see things through.

I love the Imperial War Museum. My son loved the WWI trenches downstairs.

Here are some famous Yankee posters from WWII:

    German propaganda:

"In the deepest need Hindenburg chose Adolf Hitler for Reich Chancellor. You too should vote for List 1."

    Buy German!

    "German Week/German Goods/German Labor."

    "We build body and soul."

^ Somehow I don't think he'll like my comment about taking my 4 year old son to the Imperial War Museum and playing in the Maginot line trenches!

Ironically enough Howard envoked a similar outrage during the last election with tales of immigrants throwing children overboard. Funny, history does repeat!

Ahh! Been looking for this, some 'classic' propaganda from the 1950's. Different era, same goal. Real 'Reds Under the Bed!' scaremongering stuff this. What's particularly scary about it is that it was written and presented to a target auidence of children, hence the comic formet.

Foreward by none other than J. Edgar Hoover hisself:
