    Is "Discovery Channel" American ?

With the ever-changing availability of sat channels in my building I came across "Discovery" today whilst looking for Star Movies. Now I wouldn't normally watch this because some guy once told me he'd seen , in graphic detail , a katoey cut operation but I flipped by accident and there was some guy talking about a terrorist attack on the US involving an EMP with all the possible disastrous consequences and I just imagined whatsisname in the Hindu Kush yelling at his minions to get the sattelite dish right in case he missed something.

American death wish or guilt trip because it's only been the "coalition of the willing" been taking domestic terror up the arse lately ?

If an EMP went off we wouldn't even know it until we sat down at our PC for a good wank. Never mind, we would think, as we headed for the DVD player with a dirty movie in hand. In that next, horrible moment, we would truly realise that civilisation as we know it had come to an end.

at times it seems as if the discovery and history channels are little more than recruiting tools for the US military.

Discovery channel is basically a unit of the Advance/Newhouse Communications group. It is listed on NASDAQ, but another third is directly owned by Newhouse, and the Founder John Hendricks.

It's most succesful productions to date are American Chopper and Monster Garage. Not real heavyweight stuff, but I suppose we can blame the audience for that.

When we first got the Discovery channel in Saipan (1980's?) they somehow messed up the audio. So, we got the American English and the Australian English at the same time. I guess it was stereo or something so the American was in one speaker and the Ozzie in the other. It was absolutely baffling and hilarious at the same time. After a few months they fixed it, but I always wondered why they felt they had to put Oz English in place of American English for the Australian audience.

Another instance of dumbing down, I guess.

^You're right. For Kiwi's they eliminate the audio all together.
