Honey, I shrank the stock market

Twitter attacks on tech are compounding damage done by Trump’s tariff spat with China

President Trump’s repeated tweets attacking Amazon, the stock market leader of the past four years, have a lot to do with today’s meltdown across equity markets. The retailing giant is down by almost 5%, while other tech names fell sharply (Tesla down 6%, Netflix down 4.5%, Nvidia down 3.4%, and Twitter down 3.3%).

The threat of a disruption to global supply chains due to a tariff tit-for-tat, the threat of government action against Amazon (for example by raising post office package charges, as The Wall Street Journal argues this morning), the threat of regulation of Facebook and perhaps Google, the collapse of the self-driving car hype, and a general sense that the tech bubble has simply blown too big have combined to turn tech into trash.

What is worrying about today’s market, though, is not the tech collapse – which was completely predictable – but the carnage among core industrial and consumer names. 3M, a diversified manufacturer, leads the Dow Jones in terms of overall point loss (accounting for 40 of the Dow’s nearly 500 point loss just before noon), followed closely by Home Depot, Boeing, Goldman Sachs, Caterpillar and Wal-Mart. Those are the non-tech market leaders. Investors who hoped for an orderly rotation out of tech instead are selling everything else.

Donald Trump depicted as a pig in New York Magazine cover - NZ Herald

"Since Trump took office, his pledge to ignore his own interests has been almost forgotten, lost in a disorienting hurricane of endless news," Chait writes...

Not only has Trump made no effort to raise ethical standards but he and his administration have flamboyantly violated the existing guidelines...

Lobbyists are seeded in every agency, 'regulating' their former employers and designing rules that favour bosses over employees and business owners over consumers.

"The sheer breadth of direct self-enrichment Trump has unleashed in office defies the most cynical predictions," Chait writes in the publication.

    ...

It is certainly not a surprise that Trump has refused to disclose his tax returns.

What's truly shocking is how much petty graft has sprung up across his administration.

Trump's Cabinet members and other senior officials have been living in style at taxpayer expense, indulging in lavish travel for personal reasons (including a trip to Fort Knox to witness the solar eclipse) and designing their offices with US$31,000 dining sets and US$139,000 doors.

    ...

He writes that despite Trump's vow to "drain the swamp", he has made no effort to raise ethical standards and his administration has "flamboyantly violated the existing guidelines".

Trump Says He Wants U.S. Troops to Leave Syria Soon
(didn't he say it already once before?)

President Donald Trump said he wants U.S. troops to leave Syria soon and will make a decision “very quickly” on how much longer they will stay, as his administration’s policy on its seven-year civil war remains in limbo.

“I want to get out, I want to bring the troops back home, I want to start rebuilding our nation,” Trump said Tuesday during a news conference at the White House with leaders of Baltic nations. He added that “our primary mission” of fighting the Islamic State terrorist group is “almost completed.”

US possibly setting up new military bases in Syria, despite Trump's 'withdrawal' promise
    Published time: 4 Apr, 2018

While President Trump has reiterated his intention to withdraw troops from Syria, the US military is reportedly working on plans to send an additional contingent to secure a foothold in the north of the war-torn country.

"I want to get out, I want to bring the troops back home, I want to start rebuilding our nation," US President Donald Trump said Tuesday during a news conference at the White House with leaders of the Baltic nations, noting that the "primary mission" of defeating the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) terrorists in Syria is "almost completed."

Promising to make a decision on the pullout "very quickly," the president noted that the US gained "nothing out of $7 trillion" spent in the Middle East over the last 17 years. "It's very costly for our country and it helps other countries a hell of a lot more than it helps us."

While reiterating his resolve to withdraw 2,000 US soldiers from Syria, first mentioned in Ohio last week, Trump hinted that the US might be willing to stay in Syria if its Middle Eastern ally, Saudi Arabia, pays for US troop deployment.

A continued US presence in Syria was reportedly discussed between Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who is wrapping up a three-week US tour which began last month. The Gulf kingdom sees the US presence in Syria as the main bulwark against Iranian influence in the region.

"Saudi Arabia is very interested in our decision," Trump said Tuesday. "And I said, well, you know, you want us to stay? Maybe you're going to have to pay."

Trump's assessment of the US presence in Syria does not seem to line up with with the Pentagon's analysis. "A lot of very good military progress has been made over the last couple of years, but the hard part, I think, is in front of us," General Joseph L. Votel, head of US Central Command, noted Tuesday at the US Institute of Peace.

General Votel explained that the US presence in the northern part of the country will play a crucial role in "stabilizing" Syria, while "consolidating gains" and "addressing long-term issues of reconstruction."

At the same time, Votel acknowledged the lack of support by the Kurdish-dominated Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which has abandoned its US-mandated positions in Syria to repel the Turkish-led operation in Afrin. The general noted that the US is "going to have to look at the ways that we keep the pressure on ISIS and continue to develop mechanisms on the ground that help us de-escalate the situation" in Syria.

"We're in Syria to fight ISIS. That is our mission, and that mission isn't over, and we're going to complete that mission," the special envoy to the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, Brett McGurk, added to Votel's remarks at the US Institute of Peace.

On another note: In 2016 Trump bragged that he was smart and used the law to pay the lowest amount of tax that he legally could. Amazon, however, doesn't seem to be smart when they do it, just criminal.

It's good to see that trump is letting his betters figure out to do with Syria, meaning the Russians, Iranians and Turks.

Trump says he didn't know about Stormy Daniels payment

Drumpf opened his big mouth again and really put his foot in it. Totally threw his lawyer under the bus....

President Donald Trump said on Thursday he did not know about a $130,000 payment made to the adult film actress Stormy Daniels for her silence, his first public acknowledgment of the scandal surrounding an alleged sexual affair that has plagued him for months."No," a terse Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One when questioned about his knowledge of the payment, which was made by his private attorney Michael Cohen in the month before the 2016 election.

The one word response broke a months-long public silence from Trump on the matter, though he's fumed about the issue in private and adamantly denied to his associates Daniels' claim he had an affair with her in 2006.

An agitated Trump tried to move quickly on -- "What else?" he asked after responding -- but reporters in the press cabin continued their questioning, asking why Cohen made the payment.

"You'll have to ask Michael Cohen," Trump said. "Michael is my attorney. You'll have to ask Michael."

He said he didn't know where the money came from, and denied he set up a fund for Cohen to draw from in making the payment.

The back-and-forth lasted only 25 seconds. But Trump's remarks amount to his most robust response yet to a story that has continued to pose legal and ethical questions for the White House. Trump's advisers encouraged him to avoid inflaming the issue by addressing it publicly, even as the President was itching to defend himself.

The White House has consistently refused to answer whether Trump was aware of the payment Cohen made to Daniels in October 2016.

The payment came in conjunction with a nondisclosure agreement Daniels signed that was designed to prevent her from speaking about the alleged sexual encounter.

Daniels recently filed a lawsuit to get out of the agreement, claiming it was void because Trump himself did not sign it. And she has spoken out about her experience, including during an interview on CBS' "60 Minutes" that aired last month.

On Thursday, her lawyer, Michael Avenatti, said Trump's remarks improved their legal standing.

"Our case just got that much better. And we very much look forward to testing the truthfulness of Mr. Trump's feigned lack of knowledge concerning the $130k payment as he stated on Air Force One," Avenatti said in a statement.

"As history teaches us, it is one thing to deceive the press and quite another to do so under oath," he said.

Further, Avenatti told CNN he plans to refile a motion to depose Trump and Cohen on Monday, the same motion that was rejected recently because a judge said it was "premature."

"Now it's not premature," Avenatti said, since the other side has since filed a motion to compel arbitration. "We will seek the deposition of Cohen and Trump."

Trump declares that his voter-fraud conspiracy theory is ‘not a conspiracy theory’

President Trump was in West Virginia to talk about tax reform, so, naturally, he began talking about the results of the 2016 election, immigration, obstruction of justice and his idea that millions of people cast illegal votes.

The path he took to discussing voter fraud went like this. (This is not made up.)

    • His administration is working on a new version of NAFTA.
    • But Mexico was helpful on curtailing the caravan of immigrants coming up from Central America.
    • They have strong laws on immigration, but America has weak laws, thanks to Democrats like Sen. Joe Manchin (W.Va.).
    • We’ve going to get tougher laws and the wall.
    • One tougher law will deal with “chain migration.”

That excludes a number of other riffs, including on sanctuary cities, “liberating” towns from the dreaded MS-13, “obstruction of justice” by the mayor of Oakland, Calif., and, naturally, rape.

And, if half of this Wiki report is true how can any one not see the conflict of interest, the collusion and deceit therein.
A long term friend of Trump. A man who's been a friend of Trump for years and who goes hunting with Trumps' kids.
Stood as a Democrat, got elected and then, within 6 months became a Republican. "To support Trump".
It's mind blowing that the good folk of the United States of America fall for this bull shit.

That's what I really find depressing.
