Britain "a broken society," says archbishop

Britain "a broken society," says archbishop
    Posted September 15th, 2007 by Indian-Muslim

London, Sept 15, IRNA , Britain is a "broken society" and urgent action is needed by the government as well as the Church to restore a sense of moral integrity to the nation, Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams has said.

"We are in a phase of our culture where the fragmentation of society is far more obvious. It's not just families, it is different ethnic communities and economic groups," the spiritual leader of the Church of England said.

"We talk about access and equality the whole time, but in practice we all seem to live very segregated lives," he said in an interview with the Daily Telegraph, published Saturday.

The archbishop suggested that his church intended to take a far more high-profile stand on moral issues than it has done in recent years.

Inequality, he said, just a symptom of a wider moral vacuum. He also referred to Britain being in a "mess about multiculturalism" as well as adding to his criticism of the effects of the Iraq war.

"It has shored up this huge victim identity among Muslims, the sense that all over the world there are places that we are being attacked," Williams said.

His interview came after he held his first meeting with Prime Minister Gordon Brown, whom he praised for reversing his predecessor Tony Blair's plans for supercasinos and hints he wants to review 24- hour drinking laws.

"The kind of political culture that Gordon Brown has come through is a bit more austere and values-oriented" in contrast to Blair, the archbishop said.

If you strip away all the dissent over the Muslim issues, there aren't that many disagreements among reasonable progressive modern countries.

Moral integrity is questionable anywhere today in the world.

    I agree.

But France has bigger problems yet, and Germany is struggling with how to deal with the Muzzies. Worldwide, people have immigrated since the first time some caveman got pissed-off over hunting quotas. Today the world is smaller, communications better, and people are immigrating to these reasonable progressive modern countries at a faster rate. And the politics and policies of these countries is too slow to deal with the influx.

I think the difference between good countries and shit countries is widening.
