Hardliner becomes Israel's new defence minister

Of the 120-seat Knesset, 55 members voted in favor of Avigdor Liberman's appointment, while 43 voted against.
One of Israel's most controversial politicians, hard-liner Avigdor Liberman, was sworn in as the country's new defense minister on Monday.
Liberman's appointment comes after weeks of political turmoil leading to the resignation of his predecessor, Moshe "Bogie" Ya'alon, in protest.
The majority of the Knesset, Israel's parliament, voted in favor of Liberman. Israel state radio broadcast on Monday that of the 120-seat Knesset, 55 members voted in favor of Liberman, while 43 voted in opposition.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition now includes all the right-wing parties and excludes the left-wing parties, which some politicians find problematic.
Hanan Ashrawi, a Palestine Liberation Organization Executive Committee member, has criticized the addition of Liberman to the government.
"Such a decision is extremely dangerous. Lieberman, who has called for the beheading of Palestinians and for their transfer outside the state of Israel, is a serious threat to peace and stability, and his appointment will generate a culture of lawlessness, extremism, violence and hate in Israel."
Liberman, a member of the right-wing Yisrael Beiteinu party, has a history of making controversial comments.
In March 2015, Liberman said that Arab-Israelis who are not loyal to Israel should be beheaded. "We need to pick up an ax and cut off his head," he said, speaking before the most recent elections. In 2001, he said he would bomb Egypt's Aswan Dam in the event of a war between Israel and Egypt.
However, when it comes to peacemaking with their neighbors, both Netanyahu and Liberman seem to see eye to eye, holding firm on the notion of a two-state solution with the Palestinians.
"I take this opportunity to make clear that I remain committed to making peace with the Palestinians and with all our neighbors," said Netanyahu.
"I listened to everything you [the Prime Minister] said and I absolutely agree with every word, including two states for two peoples," said Liberman after Netanahu's comments on Monday.
Liberman is an immigrant from the former Soviet Union who lives in a West Bank settlement that many in the international community consider to be illegal.
He served as the foreign minister but critics have taken issue with Liberman's limited military experience as he takes on this new role.

Is any one out there trying to suggest that the Multimillionaire leaders of Hamas living in exile in luxury at the behest of their Arab Bankroller's are NOT hardliners :smileylaughing:
With the swearing in of Lieberman (himself implicated in corruption scandals), Israel is considered to have it's most right wing government ever.

'I recently found myself in strong disagreement with the prime minister on moral and professional issues,' Ya'alon says of his resignation from politics.
..."I fought with all my might against manifestations of extremism, violence and racism in Israeli society, which are threatening its sturdiness and also trickling into the IDF, hurting it already," he said.
Ya'alon, the outgoing Defence Minister, is a former Chief of Staff of the Israeli Defence forces. In contrast Avigdor Lieberman, the incoming, is a former IDF Corporal who has never seen active service.
Uri Avnery: What Happened To Netanyahu?
Has it happened to him too? Is he losing touch with reality? It happened to David Ben-Gurion after 15 years in power. His behavior in the Lavon Affair was crazy. He was removed. It happened to Menachem Begin after six years in power. With great honesty, Begin admitted: “I cannot go on any longer.” He said so, and withdrew to his home. Is that what is now happening to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after 12 years in office?
His most recent acts were not sane. They were crazy as far as his own interests are concerned too. Netanyahu could have brought Isaac Herzog into his government. The good Bougie – honest, submissive and disciplined. Herzog would have brought his party with him, all of it or the great majority of it, and guaranteed a long life for the government. Herzog would have calmed the nations of the world, who have started being afraid of Netanyahu. And what did he want after all? For Netanyahu to put certain promises in writing? So what? Since when has Netanyahu hesitated to break his written promises exactly the same way he breaks his verbal promises?
Instead of the comfortable and pleasant partner, Netanyahu chose a devious bully who does not even bother to hide his deep contempt for him. Avigdor Lieberman does not hide his hopes to succeed Netanyahu at the first opportunity either. A partner who the entire world views as a dangerous man. Why? There is no explanation. No logical reason. To bring Lieberman into the government is a suicidal act. To hand the Defense Ministry to him is an insane act.
..... A person cannot continue to rule the country when a growing number of esteemed people with influence and power, who head such major institutions – the military leadership, courts, media, arts and academia – have all reached the conclusion that he is dangerous. When clear establishment figures such as former Mossad chief Meir Dagan, deputy IDF Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Yair Golan and former Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon feel the need of their consciences to stand up and voice a warning. This is what happened to Ben-Gurion. And who is Netanyahu in comparison to Ben-Gurion?

We will see, but several people are predicting the collapse of the Netanyahu coalition. I would see that as nothing but good news.

^
"The new defense minister has a long history of opposing peace plans.
Liberman quit the Likud party in 1998 over its support for the Oslo Accords. He left the Ariel Sharon led government in 2004 to protest the pending Gaza withdrawal. Again, in 2008, he walked away from the Ehud Olmert led coalition in anger over the US-backed Annapolis peace process.
He coupled that grandstanding with outrageous sounding statements over the years about wanting to bomb Ramallah and the Aswan Dam in Egypt as well as calls for drowning Palestinian prisoners in the Dead Sea.
As for Gaza, he has called on Israel multiple times to re-occupy it."
But suddenly now, dear Avi is a Dove. As said above in the Haaretz editorial, nobody believes the Israeli government. Moves are afoot to collapse the Netanyahu coalition (which has proved quite resilient up to now) however. Could be quite an interesting time for Israeli domestic politics coming up.
Nobody who is sane believe the Israeli government.Quote:

Uri Avnery has seen quite a lot of reality.
A member of the Irgun as a teenager, Avnery sat in the Knesset from 1965 to 1974 and from 1979 to 1981. He was also the owner of HaOlam HaZeh, an Israeli news magazine, from 1950 until it closed in 1993.
He is famous for crossing the lines during the Siege of Beirut to meet Yassir Arafat on 3 July 1982, the first time the Palestinian leader ever met with an Israeli.

Israel cuts water supplies to West Bank during Ramadan
Israel's national water company has cut crucial water supplies to large areas of the occupied West Bank, leaving tens of thousands of Palestinians without access to safe drinking water during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
Mekorot, the main supplier of water to Palestinian towns and cities, siphoned off water supplies to the municipality of Jenin, several Nablus villages and the city of Salfit and its surrounding villages.
Ayman Rabi, the executive director of the Palestinian Hydrology Group, told Al Jazeera on Tuesday that in some areas people had not received water for more than 40 days.
"People are relying on purchasing water from water trucks or finding it from alternative sources such as springs and other filling points in their vicinity," he said.
"Families are having to live on two, three or 10 litres per capita per day," he said, adding that in some areas they had started rationing water.
The city of Jenin, which has a population of more than 40,000 people, said its water supplies had been cut by half, and warned that it would hold Mekorot solely responsible for any tragedies resulting from water shortages during the hot summer months.
Mekorot did not respond to Al Jazeera's request for comment.
According to the UN, 7.5 litres per person per day is the minimum requirement for most people under most conditions but in some areas of Palestine - where temperatures exceed 35C - the minimum requirement is much higher.
Since 1967, Israel has limited the water available to Palestinians in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip since its forces occupied the territories.
Israelis, including settlers, consume five times more water than Palestinians in the West Bank, 350 litres per person per day in Israel compared with 60 litres per Palestinian per day in the West Bank.

Why did the pipe break? Was it a deliberate act by "somebody", was is caused by lack of maintenance, was it planned maintenance that just happened to occur when the water was most needed?
A video of the alleged broken pipe, any proof it was the actual pipe, when the video was shot and whether the local Palestinians actually agreed that it was fixed and the problem solved? Any video of delighted Palestinian citizens dancing with joy at the now flood of water casing flooding in the so called, Israel media, "territories"? The latest smear against Israel in the British media involves a distortion used repeatedly by mainstream media outlets, NGOs and pro-Palestinian propagandists: the charge that Israel cruelly uses water as a weapon against innocent Palestinian civilians, cruelly denying the population an adequate supply.
However, even by the levels of inaccuracy we’re accustomed to, the following headline and photo at The Independent represents an especially egregious example of agitprop being sold as ‘real news’:
Though there is much in the article (by Peter Yeung) that’s misleading or inaccurate, we’ll focus on the most sensational charges.
We’ll get to the charge in the headline soon, but, to start, here’s the broad charge in the opening sentence:
Israel has cut off the water supply to large areas of the West Bank, Palestinian authorities have claimed.
Though an updated Indy version of the story noted COGAT’s response regarding a temporary shortage (a couple of hours) due to a burst pipe line, COGAT (the Israeli authority in the territories) has informed us (in a series of emails) that the Indy did not publish the most relevant information. COGAT explained that, due to increased usage during the summer months, Mekorot (Israel’s water carrier) was forced to reduce the overall supply to ALL areas of the West Bank – including in Jewish communities.
We sent an email to Mekorot, who then confirmed to us the increased demand during the summer months has resulted in shortages in the West Bank “to Israeli settlements and Palestinian areas“. A resident in an Israeli community in Samaria who we spoke to confirmed that the shortages have indeed affected Jewish communities.
Now, here’s the charge in the article which was the basis of the headline:
Tens of thousands of Palestinians have reportedly been left without access to safe drinking water during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, a period of fasting, at a time when temperatures can exceed 35C.
This is, at best, extraordinarily misleading.
We’ve been in touch with COGAT, who told us that, in order to accommodate Palestinians during Ramadan, when Muslims can’t drink water during the day, “the water supply has been increased during night-time in order to meet the needs of the residents”.
COGAT additionally noted to us that, beginning at the start of Ramadan, on June 6-7, “the water supply to Hebron and Bethlehem [was] expanded [by] 5,000 cubic meters per day in order to meet the needs of the residents“.
So, to clarify, in summer months, the consumption of water naturally increases.
The water carrier can’t keep up with this increased consumption, so residents (both Muslims AND Jews) experience a shortage. Quite simply, the demand exceeds supply.
However, to make up for this shortage and, most importantly, to address the changing water needs of Palestinian Muslims during the holiday of Ramadan, Israel INCREASED the amount of available water to the Hebron and Bethlehem communities, and INCREASED the amount of available water during the night, the time when religious Muslims will need it the most.
So, the Indy’s charge that Israel malevolently “cut off water” to Palestinian Muslims during the month of Ramadan is pretty much the opposite of the truth.
Here’s an alternative Indy headline, one which would more accurately reflect the facts.
UPDATE:
Mekorot just replied to a specific follow-up question we asked late in the morning. As you can see, though it adds more details about the cause of the shortages, it’s fully consistent with the information we received from COGAT. The issue (affecting both Jews and Palestinians in the West Bank) is one of supply and demand, not an arbitrary decision by Israel to reduce the amount of water for Palestinians on Ramadan.
Water consumption in the area has greatly increased during this period of the year and the water sources have decreased this year compared to last year due to the declining water level in the mountain aquifer, and therefore we have been compelled to reduce the water supply to all consumers.https://ukmediawatch.org/2016/06/16/...uring-ramadan/
One needs to know how many people this supply is for. Do the Palestinians get 1ltr/person and the Jews 1,000 ltr/person?Quote:

As such again the charge could be justified or, if not, be clarified by polling the Palestinians/Jews for their opinion, a comment from the joint management group or much much better reporting.
At the moment we have articles with too many weasel words to form a position of who is to blame. Most people just pay, in some way or another, for water to be supplied to their homes. When it doesn't appear they are rightly angry.
Or have you a way of providing your own water supply?
There's a joint Jewish-Palestinian water supply authority seemingly functioning.
How effective it is in achieving its goals I don't know, other than discussions currently are focused on repairing and upgrading a patchwork of pipes both sabotaged, illegally tapped and legally tacked together for generations.
The water supply is getting worse with diminishing clean water resources available as sewage and sea water penetrates what's left of the Palestine aquifers.
Desalination of sea water is probably the best option for coastal Israel including Gaza, but its going to take co-operation not rockets for Gazan's to get anything along those lines up and running.
After the Oslo accord which included water rights, 31 billion dollars donated to the PA has mostly just disappeared, unaccounted for, while developing a decent infrastructure has taken a back seat and Palestinians have, of course blamed Israel for their financial problems.
Where has all the money gone to?
There are more than 1700 millionaires in Gaza alone!
The richest man is of course, a Palestinian from a refugee camp.
When Muslims cease to be rogues and criminals ripping off their own people habitually, pigs will fly and the world will develop peacefully and fairly.
Maybe the truth. After all, water mains that feed Palestinian communities may also feed some Israeli settlements. Colateral damage. Did Mekorot happen to mention that the Jewish settlements affected were supplied by truck for free? Did Mekorot happen to mention that water mains that supplied Israeli settlements but not Palestinians were not rationed?Quote:
