Thats the irony, and a big one. Plenty of affluence too. You certainly have a big problem in Congress, which is just plain dysfunctional. But I think a bigger problem than fed government is your people- hopelessly divided, and blinkered by partisanship- assisted of course by good ole fashioned manipulation, and a political system pretty much designed to stymie. And I think the biggest problem of all is with the white American male population- I think as a demographic they are currently acting as the major impediment, and the easiest demographic to be hoodwinked.

Basically, you watched too much John Wayne, not enough Mr Smith goes to Washington.
Maybe on the contrary. White Americans are on the decline, immigrants from countries no used to democracy and equality, but the rule of men and money on the rise. More ethnic, religious, cultural fault lines to be exploited by the manipulators.

I'm rereading Stieg Larsson's Millenium series at the moment, the author was a far left revolutionary. Yet his heroine Lisbeth Salander and John Wayne are quite alike.
