This article disgusts me. Makes me glad to no longer call Virginia my home. If my ancestors wanted someone to apologize for them..they would have asked!

I agree, an apology here is of no use. I think the decendents of those who benefited from the slave trade (such as your good self) should need to pay compensation to decendents of the slaves.

Perhaps it might also be appropriate to give some more compensation to the native American's from who your ancestors stole land away from as well.

Between that an the recent indian gaming expansion all around the country, native americans are doing quite well.

If you took a trip into rural Alaska you would be surprised how many brand new trucks you see.

Every time I flew in there there would be a dozen or more brand new trucks waiting to see what arrived on the plane.
This a community of only 240 people.
The trucks have to be shipped in via stretched Lockheed C-130's at a tune of $6000.00 a pop just for shipping.
Some of these communities are awash with federal money!
The mail subsidies alloted these rural areas is staggering.
I didn't mind because it meant fat paychecks for people like me willing to fly airplanes in a place that was virtually the edge of the world.

The African Americans seemed to live completely seperate lives from say the 'white' Americans. I noticed this especially in places such as Chicago, Boston and Philidelphia. Is this seperation due to American's history of slave trade or something else?
If it is partially due to the slave trade shouldn't every effort be made to set things right?

I think if America wants to tell the rest of the world how they should live maybe it is a good idea that they get their 'own house in order' first?

I have nothing against Americans but think that current American foreign policy stinks.

The Americans owe the blacks nothing.
The Americans of today had nothing to do with them being slaves, only about 10% of the African slaves were taken to the USA and so if anyone owes anything then the US only owes 10%.
But in that 150 years they have done nothing for themselves.
Ever since they were freed over 150 years ago they have done nothing to better themselves but live on the goodwill of the American working stiff who pays taxes to feed, cloth, and house them thru liberal give away programs.
For years there has been reverse discrimination programs in effect where they could go to schools of higher learning without the test scores that were required for entry, were taken into apprentice training programs that no white could even get in.
But still they would not go to school, would not go to work after the paid training was done and any more moneys would have to been earned.

They live in public funded housing which is owned by the govt and is centered in certain areas where the housing is constructed. If they wanted to live elsewhere they could get a job and rent a house just like everyone else, But they wouldn't be in trash areas if they would have taken care of the area when they moved in there instead of trashing the whole area and all whites moving away to get away from the crime.

No matter what has been done for the black they will not accept it.
Look at the starvation in Africa, Rwanda, Rhodesia and other areas where whites were killed and ran off of their land that they had farmed very economically for years and had Negro's working and getting payed and had full bellies, made money exporting food, now it is taken over by Negro's who raise nothing on that very land, Starve and beg for world govt services to haul in food so they can starve and die instead of letting whites farm it, pay them wages and they could have housing, clothing and food if they wanted to work.

Do not tell me how the black is fucked over and if given a chance would really show you, Bullshit..
Granted they were brought from Africa, but they have had a chance just like everyone else in America to work, get an education just like everyone else, but you can see what they do and have done, just like the African cousins that ran the whites off and now are starving and killing each other on land that they could have prospered on..

I lived in DC, but my dad lives in Virginia.

But my dad is not a real Virginian because he lives in the Annandale/Alexandria are - he's a Northern Virginai transport from the Seattle area, but he's been there since the late 1960s. off and on - almost 40 years.

But as for the real Virginians - the people who live in this beautiful state with many elements of Southern culture and green hills,

I think an apology is just a symbolic jesture, and nothing more.

Most people living in Virginia don't have relatives (I think) that lives there and/or specfically benefitted from the slave economy.

Slavery is despicable, no doubt about it.

An apology is only words, and they are words from the mouths of politicians (hint, politics, re-elections).

Tracing one's family to slavery is one issue that would have to be proved. Many can do this. Not all can.

My relatives on both sides of my family arrived in the U.S. in the 1880s, after slavery had been abolished and they never were in businesses that benefitted from slavery, nor did they own slaves.

(CNN) -- Twelve-year-old Beatrice returns from the fields with small animals she's caught for dinner.
Her mother, Elizabeth, prepares the meat and cooks it on a grill made of three stones supporting a wood fire. It's just enough food, she says, to feed her starving family of six.
Tonight, they dine on rats.
"Look what we've been reduced to eating?" she said. "How can my children eat rats in a country that used to export food? This is a tragedy."
This is a story about how Zimbabwe, once dubbed southern Africa's bread basket, has in six short years become a basket case. It is about a country that once exported surplus food now apparently falling apart, with many residents scrounging for rodents to survive.
According to the CIA fact book, which profiles the countries of the world, the Zimbabwean economy is crashing -- inflation was at least 585 percent by the end of 2005 -- and the nation now must import food.
Zimbabwe's ambassador to United States, Machivenyika Mapuranga, told CNN on Tuesday that reports of people eating rats unfairly represented the situation, adding that at times while he grew up his family ate rodents.
"The eating of the field mice -- Zimbabweans do that. It is a delicacy," he said. "It is misleading to portray the eating of field mice as an act of desperation. It is not."
Western journalists aren't allowed in Zimbabwe. CNN gained access via a cameraman who operated under the radar of the Zimbabwean government. Mapuranga said that there are news agencies allowed to film there but that the country was "under siege" by media outlets like CNN and the BBC, "which have shown themselves to be hostile to the people of Zimbabwe."
Critics: Mugabe rules with iron fist

Critics point to one man for the nation's downfall -- 82-year-old President Robert Mugabe, one of the longest-serving rulers in Africa. They say he rules with an iron fist and has reduced Zimbabwe to a nation of beggars.
On Friday, Mugabe downplayed the situation in the country.
"I know we are in difficult times; it's hard times that we are going through. You are bearing a fair share of the burden, we know that [but] Zimbabwe will never collapse," he told a meeting of his ruling political party, the Zimbabwe African National Union - Patriotic Front, or ZANU - PF, according to Reuters.
But Shadrack Gutto, of the Center for International Political Studies, said Zimbabwe is on the verge of collapse.
"The reality is it's really grinding down and not improving," he said.
The downslide began, critics say, in 2000 when the government crippled the country's prime commercial farms by running off white farmers and redistributing the land to Mugabe's cronies. At least a dozen white farmers were killed and dozens were injured and hospitalized. Thousands more fled the country and the land. Most of that land now lies empty and abandoned.
