That and a hell of a lot of metals and minerals under the ground which the Chinese are busily exploiting at this very moment.

The west pays for the super expensive war in Afghanistan, and the Chinese come in and profit greatly by digging for gold, and other metals, after the US has paid the price to restore some peace and open up the country.

I suppose we are trying to control the opium, profits from which funded terrorism.
