I have old diving gear that has sat unused for ~10 years. Is it worth getting it refurbished or should I junk it? The BCD, regulator, gauges, etc are all mid level gear, not great but ok for their age. All of the gear is in visually excellent shape but I am sure all the o-rings etc. need replacing. It is worth having a 10 year old tank re-certified or should I just junk it, (it is atleast 10 years since it needed to be tested). ? Can I ship a tank commercially if I remove the valve from the top and send it as an open cylinder?
Unfortunately the wet suit is a total loss, apparently it has shrunk profoundly over the last 10 years. This can be the only explanation for how it no longer fits.
The bcd, regulators, gauges should be fine however they should be checked out and serviced by a qualified repair shop, Depending on the age and make of the equipment it might not be able to be serviced over here unless you can provide the serviceing kits. We recently had a regulator in for repair and unfortunately no replacement part kits are available incountry. The owner is going to have family in the US order the kit and have it shipped over here as the only other way is to order from outside the country and the shipping costs on it would have been very high and there is no guarentee that anyone in asia even has the parts. there are tanks in service that are over 30 years old. As long as they can pass a tank test which includes visiual testing, pressure testing and a thread test it should be ok, However for shipping you will have to check with who ever you chose to do the shipping with. That is a little out of my league.
Hope that helps
Its all good to know, the regulator(s) and bcd were the most expensive parts of the gear anyhow I think. BCD was US Divers I think, don't remember who made the regulator. They are stored 6,000 km away so its tough to check
Thanks for the info!
