I do mean, is there a "Free-diving" course available in Thailand?
I'd like to improve my diving minus the SCUBA.

I've never seen any.
Apnea Total free diving school on Koh Tao
Apnea Total
Monica and Eusebio run the school and they are very nice people
Wouldn't it be cheaper just going in the bath tub and holding your breath?
That's advanced training. I'm a beginner.Originally Posted by Gallowspole

WW, I'm a beginner too even if I first got my license 2 years + ago.
When I go snorkeling here I tell people I'm going free diving and leave them at the surface wondering where I am. It's great to bump into the scuba divers down there too.Originally Posted by sharon
I think I made it 8 once. (The Thai guy I was with made it 12 m and showed me the sand. Crazy.)
I'd really like to get my feet in a mono-fin though. :>
Where do you dive normally? How often?
Used to dive to around 70 feet for maybe 3 minutes at a time but never had any formal training. Wouldn't mind doing that one day. Thanks for the info on Apnea Total.
I believe there is a decent course operating in Pattaya
My instructor can help you. Emmm... no, it's not free.Originally Posted by Whose Wandering

It's difficult to get to when living and working in Bangkok with not enough time for satisfactory weekend dives.
I did the beginners course with Apnea Total a few weeks ago. Got down to 12 metres on day 1, and 20m on day 2. They teach relaxation techniques and breathing so you conserve oxygen, and can stay under longer without feeling that gasping for air feeling.
Highly recommended.
Thanks Monica. Excellent instructor!
Freediving is great. It's fun going down past the scuba divers, and waving at them on the way down and again on the way up while they are sitting there decompressing
Shame they get to stay under considerably longer than me though... The two air tanks inside my chest don't hold quite as much as those external tanks.

Freediving Courses now also offered in the Philippines. Just google. Bye, Wolfgang
The greatest thing about free diving is it introduced me to Jean Reno, still one of my favourite actors.
not to miss Jean Marc Barr.
he did some good independent movies with the lars van trier group!
check out IMDB on him.
Free diving is a health insurers dream.
First of all its called Freediving and not Free diving.
Second of all: obviously you never met freedivers: i am freediving since more than 10 years. most freedivers are very concious about their body/life/safety. just because there are 2 lethal accidents within 5 years, and all of them have been no limits divers, doesnt say anything about the safety of the sport.
Freediving is a potentially dangerous activity and can lead to serious injury and death even if all currently known limitations and safety guidelines are followed correctly. Accidents may be due to, but not limited to, drowning, shallow water blackout, defective gear, improper operation of boats, ear and sinus injuries, shark attack and others.
you can substitute the word freediving with:
- "driving a car" is a potentially dangerous activity and can lead to serious injury and death even if all currently known limitations and safety guidelines are followed correctly. ....
or also
- skiing, motorbiking, eating unhealthy foods, smoking, drinking, ....
all is right!
and when it comes to statistics the average freediver is more healthy and lives longer. -> Bad business for insurance companies.
