I think that kind of handshake is disrespectful to the symbol it supposes to represent. I have had BG wai me, but I never do and I don't think they expect me to wai back.
Trying to impress the girls with a Wai is definitely "faux pas"
as for tipping:
- DO NOT OVERTIP, it's ok to leave 10 THB or 15 THB but anything above that is ludicrous. Why you ask ? because you wreck the market, once they see farangs leaving 50 THB tips, they will expect every farang to do so, no matter what the bills is. Thai don't make the distinction between bills and soon enough, they "generalize" the idea that all tipping should be the same. Tipping used to be occasional, but now you get dirty look if you don't. It just spoils the market and raise their expectations. Unlike westerners who understand the merit behind tipping, Thais don't and will take it for granted soon enough. I like to take away tips away from them, as explained above, it pissed them off and lower their expectations of farangs being just walking walets. It's a matter of principle, still I usually leave tips of 10 THB to round the tab.
