    Phuket Vegetarian Festival 2023

I'm going to post random photos from this years festival, and I have to stress these are not my photos. I don't bother going to watch the processions anymore, though did when I first came here some 16 years ago.

The first day of the festival is today, and it goes on for 9 days.

Thailand has a long-standing vegan tradition in the form of jay, it is a Buddhist-Taoist religious practice.

Why do they put things through their mouths/cheeks? Looks bizarre.
I bet the food surrounding this event would be amazing though. Would be awesome to see this in person minus the swords in the cheeks. *crazy*

Way back when we lived in Chalong i went with a Thai friend to a piercing event/ceremony somewhere in the forest around the base of Big Buddha hill; like a voodoo scene from a b-grade movie, drums, dancing and a magical potion passed around (I declined, in case I went home with a bike wheel inserted through my cheek)

This from The Nation at the last event; if you've said anything sinful (does this include forum chatter?) time to get to work with the knitting needles....

Some with their faces pierced with sharp objects say the meaning of the piercing is a symbol of the sinful things they might have said during the off-vegetarian season.

"For me personally, we use our mouths to talk, right? And naturally, it may be speaking of the good or sinful things during the off-season (of vegetarian festival). We may have spoken good or bad things, so the piercing is for us to feel the wrong and sins we've committed," said Patcharaporn Phromchai.

The Chanthaburi vegetarian festival is underway, processions, music/dance, but no piercing - is this a Phuket-only thing?

I wonder what the meaning of shoving a plastic umbrella handle through your gob is.

    Googleboy?

A break from the self mutilation, actual vegetarian food being prepared and dispensed. Most of the roads and sois in the towns of Phuket will have stalls dispensing all things tofu, noodle and rice......

Apart from the day time processions, some of the temples have night time frolics, in particular walking across hot coals (maybe these should be in the BBQ, Grilling and Smoking thread). Actually more of determined run rather than a walk, though still some 'feet' (sic).

EEK! Brave souls! Isn't there a saying that enlightened ones can walk over hot coals feeling no pain or something of the sort?

There is an old proverb "you can lick a vagitarian with the needle but don't swallow" Luigi Fitzminty
